I agree 100% that snow tires should be mandatory; but (imo) so should annual or by-annual safety inspections. It won't happen here though; there isn't anyone in our government that is willing to commit political suicide trying to pass such a law. I'm retired now but I worked the automotive trade as a licensed tech for 48 years. You wouldn't believe the unsafe vehicles out there; I mean vehicles driving beside, behind or coming towards you. Who knows how well that vehicle has been maintained. It would be so easy to implement; get a safety inspection or don't bother going in for your next year's license sticker. Ho yeah. Have your snow tires taken off or put on while you are at the garage. LOL

never mind winter tires, how many people are running on belted slicks

or better yet...driving essentially without brakes.

Anyone knowingly driving with faulty brakes show have their license taken away. When it comes to the safety of yourself, your passengers and the lives of other drivers there is no choice.

How about bringing back 'Drive Clean " while we are at it 🤬

Well, Drive Clean was a debacle from the get go. Those of us who owned auto repair and testing facilities will attest to it. I won't go into the details as it's been discussed ad nauseam!

However, safety inspections are quite another thing. Annual, or even bi-annual inspections are long overdue, say after the vehicle is 3-5 years old. I would see infractions, (many very serious), on a weekly basis. Dangerously worn brakes, bald tires, body panels hanging off, frames and mounts rusted through, vehicles crabbing down the road, driving lights and signal lights out, vehicles modified waaay beyond their capabilities, tire beads over stretched onto rims plus many others. I would say that 1 out of every 8 or 10 cars and trucks and vans that came in for oil changes etc. had some kind of safety issue. This was in Milton, however I'm sure that the town was not unique. Do the math and you will scare the crap out of yourself as to how many potentially dangerous weapons are out there on our roads. Rant over!

"I'm a firm believer in winter tires"

I'm a firm believer that it's your decision and just because it's your decision doesn't mean it's a decision that everyone makes.

I also think the government is involved in too much of our life. They can't even manage themselves.

Sometimes peoples decisions are on the wrong side of smarts and when they want to drive around without the proper equipment then they should stay off the roads and leave it safer for the rest of us that do have smarts.

I don't need to have the government tell me what to do. I'm in my 60s and have never had winter tires and as long as my tires are in good shape with good tread I don't need winter tires. You want winter tires, that's fine with me, I've got no problem with that. I'm just tired of other people's opinions being thrust upon everyone just because they think they are right

BTW, I drive over 30k a year, I used to drive 60 k a year. Never had an accident caused by snow or cold.

I doubt you'll get many people agreeing with that, Just the fact that snow tires stop much better in winter conditions is enough reason to have them. Just because you don't think you need them doesn't mean they shouldn't be used. I wouldn't even get up my driveway without snow tires on my car.

For years I never bought winter tires didn’t want them

but I bought a truck that if I didn’t put at least 300 lbs of stuff in the box , it had no traction in the winter. I bought a set of winter tires because I had to try something, and it made a huge difference, I had them mounted on cheap steel rims

Putting away my nice aluminum rims for the winter kept them in perfect condition and even more important the winter tires are cheaper then my summer tires   So I only wear out my expensive tires for half a year meaning they last twice as long.  So buying winter tires save me money in the long run and makes driving in the winter safer.  Win win in my books

Some people on this board live in the snow belt and have to get to work.
others live in places like Chatham and don’t have to go out if they get a storm.

also some vehicles are worse in winter then others.  Do they put winter tires on 18wheelers.
