How to size a bow-mount electric trolling motor
siwash replied to siwash's topic in General Discussion
Thanks, Bassman, My boat is not a deep V. In fact I took it out briefly on the weekend and deployed the trolling motor (a 45") that came with the sale. There was a chop. Seemed fine. the prop was well submerged in the water. It's not a big boat, and as I said, not very deep. Maybe big swells changes that. But I don't go out when there's major chop to be honest. I generally fish small lakes (Cameron, Kashe, etc) We will see! So what are the main features then of the regular i-Pilot ? I know it can spot lock (which is what I wanted) and I believe it will navigate to a direction that you can lock in to (record a track?). Will it learn a route? I saw a video where they demonstrated this by using their main motor to set the route then the i-pilot learned it and was able to replicate. Price was right so I jumped on it. It's a lot better than the old unit I currently have which is a 50lbs older Minn (90s) -

I ended up buying a Terrova off Marketplace. Owner didn't have manuals. I'll download them and watch Youtube as I have no clue how to use it. It'a 45" 80lbs thrust. He bought a longer unit because he had bought a 18' boat. He said I needed to make sure that I had a newer model finder that can link the I-pilot features to be able to take advantage of the full spectrum of options on these Terrovas.. So that I can network it and be able to use Navionics maps. Honestly, it'll be a learning curve. I'm sure between YouTube and a downloaded manual, I'll figure it out. A friend is helping me get it all wired and ready for the season. Need another 12V battery to begin with. So I was thinking of installing a brand new Garmin Strike Vivid 4cv. I picked up up on sale last fall to put in my previous boat. Can these be linked up with the Terrovas? What else should I be considering before I get into this setup? Thanks! -

I looked at my front storage where a 12V battery is housed currently. I actually have a 12V deep cycle from my previous boat. But it's a group 27 battery and its 2" longer (12" v 10"). It'll be a challenge to fit it in there since I need two 12V batteries to operate a 80lber. Guess I will have to get a smaller battery. The battery sold with the boat must be a 24. I am reading though, that 27s are the way to go for marine applications.. thoughts? -

I decided not to buy that one because I was thinking the same thing you posted. Just exploring now.. and yeah, make a lot more sense to get a new one that would cost about $800 or so more.. and the one of Marketplace actually sold. I think the one on sale for $2400 makes the most sense.. That terrova with the mini remote - reviews were meh.. some complained about the tiny remote and while another said: It was only when having the trolling motor installed in the Spring did I discover that the motor I bought did not include the heading sensor. The unit does spot lock without the sensor, but you cannot “jog “ left or right, front or back without the sensor. Also, the remote was the mini version and not the one with the lcd screen. So, not a deal at all. Cost me almost $400 to fully complete the expected experience. Buyer beware. -

So the current motor is 45" shaft. Can you get away with a 60" (can these be adjusted?) ? I'm assuming that you want avoid the blades too high up in the water column.. but deeper in the water it'll still function properly? -

What do you think of this? https://www.facebook.com/share/9XJT4C3Zd2i3rJZk/?mibextid=79PoIi -
Can you explain the built in charger please?
-
I didn't think about using the big motor to charge the batteries..
-
Well, one way to avoid getting stuck on the water is to buy a kicker. I was going to do that either way as I do like to troll and I was thinking about adding auxiliary power
-
The last few replies make me feel better! Thanks guys... The compression tester was a Cdn Tire purchase. I'll my mechanic to check it. I recently found this guy so hard to say how honest and reliable but he seems good..

the motor ran really well on the water. Started up without a problem. I know that doesn't mean it doesn't have problems.
-
sure.. but would hate for that to happen if i'm on a trip... and get stuck on the water. We are going to Port Loring for 4 days in early June.. Would hate for something like that to happen.

So if it's close to pooched, what would this current engine be worth if I opted to buy another one and sold this as a "parts" motor? I see them advertised in the $500 range
-
So what should I be expecting to pay for this work (re bore and new rings, if that's all I need)? And, does anyone know who does this in York Region or Simcoe county? I could even head a bit further west toward Bolton/Oragneville/Dufferin County.
-
Geez, I hope this thing lasts me the year without major headaches. i guess I should be considering a re-bore and new rings sooner than later? Will this just die on me? Or is this more of a slow death? Starting to regret this now.

So I'll look out for a newer motor - hoping to still nab an ipilot. -

looks interesting. When shopping for a used one, should I be looking for anything with 'ipilot'? Or am I looking for anything else? -
The boat came with an older Minnkota powerdrive.. he never used it - you can tell because there isn't a scratch. With that boat, should I still be looking to move up to 80lbs or can I get away with less? Seller said boat is under 1500lbs without the trailer. Is there any chance I can convert that unit to a spot lock by replacing the head? Thought i'd ask because i have come across this option. *I am going to continue this on the other thread I started on trolling motors.. *

the boat I just picked up has an older MK Powerdrive. I've heard the heads can be replaced to make the spotlocks. Is this correct? -
I should also mention that the seller had a used lower unit put in in 2021. He said something about a gear issue. But like I said, it sounded great, took off, attained a speed of 30 mph with three guys in the boat. I realize that that doesn't mean it'll be trouble free! I like that they are pretty simple engines. Lots of Johnson parts around still but i realize that in the future there will be fewer and fewer and parts will dry up. By then I'll have a new motor!

I don't know if spending $2000 on that motor is prudent. I can buy a used newer 2 stroke for not much more.. Maybe Biteme is on to something. Worth exploring. What tools would i need?
