You're right MB2 -

did some digging - they can access anything, anytime.. this article must have been where I was reading it - this guy tried and failed

and yeah - as for US Customs -. Nice enough folks when you're working with them, but not a great sense of humour, I must say

A post like this ( which happens all the time in social media after a run in with authorities ) is very effective at scaring everyone into compliance.

Like the float plane that drops down for a visit to look for a fishing licence in the Algonquin back country

They have ALOT of power!

With that comes some real pita guys and gals.

Our border with international falls was awesome until 9/11.

I used to cross freely on my bike to work with just a nod and a wave.

The same folks I had grown to know over the years drew guns on me after 9/11 for the exact same thing they had given me permission to do!

I was detained all day. Although i an an american citizen and its my RIGHT to pass the boarder.

They had cops escort me to the I falls courthouse to obtain my birth certificate records(i never used to carry it)

After proving my citizenship to guys that already knew I was american, they continued to detain me.

After 12 or so hours I was denied access(illegally) to enter my own country.

After filling out many forms, I was sent to canadian customs with the police waiting.

More forms, and questions. I knew these guys well and they were shocked.

But the paperwork had to be done so I did it.

I have not crossed the border since. It left me with a very bad taste in my mouth so to speak.

The boarder who is, WHO.

Says the owl lol

Nah they have sworn a strong oath to protect countries leaders at almost any cost.

I will say i find canadian customs 10 fold easier to deal with then the US counterparts.

But i havent crossed for almost 15 years so i zero idea if its improved or gotten worse???

you should have a password on your phone. lesson learned

It don't matter if you put a password on it or not, if you want to cross they will access your phone if they want to.

I think there are still parts of Ron's 1976 Monty Carlo at the border, from when we use to go to Buffalo for "at par" beers back in 1981! Just part of the game and I certainly hope that my "fruit of the looms" are hopefully long buried into land fill !

In the end nothing happened and it was just a mix up with some false information...

My biggest concern is that I'll be "flagged" and harassed every time I come through Canadian customs because of this performance where in the end I did nothing wrong...

I guess I'll find out next trip over

Seems where ever I cross I get "Welcome home EH!!"

And I'm gone. :D

Actually lots of times going to the US the customs officers like to chat a bit as well..one asked where we were heading and them proceeded to offer advice on the best restaraunts in the area...

It was a number of years ago that a buddy of mine was getting married. His best man planned a trip to Niagara Falls New York for the 30 odd guys attending the stag.

We were all there when the "groom" arrived at the bar with the best man. It took about ten of us to hold him down, so the best man could attach the bowling ball and chain to his leg. We then boarded a chartered bus, that was to take us to the falls that evening.

There were a number of consumables on the bus, cases of beer stacked in the aisle. Needless to say, by the time we arrived at the border, most if not all of us would have no problem admitting that we were likely over served by that point.

The best man told us to behave as he was going to exit the bus to talk to the U.S. border agents. After a few minutes, four border agents got on the bus, asking to see the ball and chain. Laughs were exchanged and they sent us on our way.

I know things have changed since that time, but I thought it was a funny story to pass along.

When Mike & I went to Michigan last week the US border guy was a real chatterbox!!! :D

When we told him where we were going he said that he goes there to fish often.

We were there close to 5 minutes blabbing about fishing while there was a long lineup at the border. :whistling:

Guess it depends on the border too

The international falls border is rediculous.

Google image it from above its a big american flag, even has one of those big xray type machines

Looks more like a small army base than customs

Theyve had side arms for along time

I googled it, Canadian Border officers have had sidearms since 2007, not a long time from an older guy's perspective
