mr blizzard Posted August 27, 2015 Report Posted August 27, 2015 Watch out for the winds Sunday , but you will probably have er licked by then
Old Ironmaker Posted August 27, 2015 Report Posted August 27, 2015 I told you this would have been a reality TV hit. Now you can show us the 2 dozen workers you have hiding in the bush. Holmes has that many minimum on any build, more sometimes. Amazing simply amazing. I'm building a small shed and that will take me a week more to finish with help. You could build it at lunch break.
16 Footer Posted August 29, 2015 Report Posted August 29, 2015 Great job and material lift! I can see from your work you are a pro at construction. Question: Why are you using OSB or aspenite sheathing on the roof when half inch plywood is used on most new house roofs?
DRIFTER_016 Posted August 30, 2015 Author Report Posted August 30, 2015 Great job and material lift! I can see from your work you are a pro at construction. Question: Why are you using OSB or aspenite sheathing on the roof when half inch plywood is used on most new house roofs? They use OSB on new construction around here. Not sure why but it's plenty strong and less expensive. Maybe that's why. Also our snow loads are very low here compared to a lot of places.
DRIFTER_016 Posted August 30, 2015 Author Report Posted August 30, 2015 Got out to the cabin on Friday night and worked hard all day Saturday before heading back to town before dark. Would have stayed out all weekend but there is a front moving through tonight and they are calling for some pretty crappy weather tomorrow. 45 kph winds gusting over 70 kph out of the East. They are the worst for my place. Coming straight into my dock from across the lake. There will probably be 3-4 footers hitting my shore. Not good winds for carrying sheathing on top of the cabin. Got some more sheathing done on the South side as well as some on the North side. Also got a bunch of my collar ties temporarily in place so I could remove the center brace and crane. I will level out all the collar ties when the loft is in place.
2 tone z71 Posted August 30, 2015 Report Posted August 30, 2015 (edited) Osb is pretty standard on all of our builds as well...great job btw that's a sweet get a way Edited August 30, 2015 by North East Shark
Sinker Posted August 30, 2015 Report Posted August 30, 2015 Lookin great man!! Whats the roof getting covered with? Shingles? Awesome job! Thats an amazing accomplishment for one man! S.
mr blizzard Posted August 30, 2015 Report Posted August 30, 2015 Looks good Dave, we were going to come out today and see u but definitely not a boating day, glad u got off the water yesterday
DRIFTER_016 Posted August 30, 2015 Author Report Posted August 30, 2015 Lookin great man!! Whats the roof getting covered with? Shingles? Awesome job! Thats an amazing accomplishment for one man! S. The plan is for standing seam metal roofing. Hunter green in colour like this roof.
Sinker Posted August 30, 2015 Report Posted August 30, 2015 The plan is for standing seam metal roofing. Hunter green in colour like this roof. I was hoping you would say that Good choice! S.
16 Footer Posted August 31, 2015 Report Posted August 31, 2015 Metal roof last a long time and is the way to go. Snow will slide off a metal roof but put catch clips over doorways. Shingles don't last in harsh weather conditions and are a pain to remove / get rid of when they go bad.
Old Ironmaker Posted August 31, 2015 Report Posted August 31, 2015 Get the OSB covered asap, it doesn't like water. You know that already. I see it holding up much better than some ridiculously thin plywood I have seen used.

I see it holding up much better than some ridiculously thin plywood I have seen used. Actually Grade 1 (exterior) OSB is quite resistant to water and can be exposed for quite a while without harm. I hope to get it all finished and covered for the winter this weekend though.
DRIFTER_016 Posted September 7, 2015 Author Report Posted September 7, 2015 Crappy weekend this week. Sick on Saturday, good day on Sunday and rain on Monday. I didn't get done what I wanted to but did get a little done before heading home early due to the weather. Too dangerous to be up on the roof when it's wet. Saturday I was able to work for 10 mins before taking a 30 min break. Too weak from the sickness. Got the door in and some of the exterior sheathing and tuck taping done on the front and South side. Also got half of the back gable end sheathed. Sunday I got all of the blocking on the North side rafters done as well as the eve and front fly rafters. I redid the sheathing as it wasn't working out from the top down. Hopefully next weekends weather is good and I can get the roof finished.
lew Posted September 7, 2015 Report Posted September 7, 2015 You should be very proud of your accomplishment Dave, that's very impressive work, specially considering you've basically done it all yourself.
manitoubass2 Posted September 7, 2015 Report Posted September 7, 2015 Please tell me your cabin is gonna be wrapped in a beautiful deck?
