..First winter storm of the season overnight into Thursday..

The first winter storm of the season will approach southern Ontario

overnight as it moves northeast from the Ohio Valley. A swath of

snow will extend well ahead of the storm overnight across Lake Huron

to cottage country and east to Ottawa with rain falling south of this

line across regions near the lower lakes. The rain will become mixed

with ice pellets and then turn to snow by early Thursday morning

across the Golden Horseshoe area to Kingston as temperatures

Gradually drop below the freezing mark..With the possibility that

near 2 centimetres of snow will fall by Thursday morning except for

regions located in the Dundalk Highlands where 5 centimetres are

likely. Regions located close to Lake Erie will see primarily rain

overnight before changing over to snow later Thursday morning.

Freezing rain is a possible during this change from rain to snow.

Hence it may be a slippery commute for many on Thursday morning

Through southwestern Ontario..The Golden Horseshoe..And areas along

Lake Ontario.

The storm is set to slide south of the lower Great Lakes on Thursday

during the day before making its way to the eastern seaboard by

Thursday night. Widespread snow is expected to fall across southern

Ontario on Thursday with the snow gradually tapering off to flurries

from west to east during the day.

At this time..Total snowfall accumulations of near 5 centimetres are

possible over southwestern Ontario with 10 to 15 centimetres of snow

possible from the Dundalk Highlands to near Ottawa. It should be

emphasized that the majority of the snow will be moisture-laden and

may melt quickly when it first falls. The amount of accumulating

Snow will depend on how warm the ground temperatures will be..

Especially on paved surfaces. In general higher accumulations of

snow will occur over grassy surfaces and higher terrain.

Environment Canada will continue to monitor the development of the

winter storm. As more information becomes available the statement

will be revised.

Listen for further statements. Additional information may also be

found by consulting the latest public forecast. The next public

forecast will be issued by 5 AM.

UPDATE TO SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT.....

11:57 AM EST Wednesday 21 November 2007

..10 to 20 centimetres of snow likely by Thursday night..

An approaching winter storm from Missouri will bring the first winter storm of the season tonight and Thursday. Many regions extending from Lake Huron east to the Dundalk Highlands is currently seeing rain but as the temperature falls to near freezing the rain will quickly change over to wet snow and ice pellets this afternoon and then snow tonight. Near 10 centimetres of snow is expected to fall tonight with an additional 10 centimetres to follow on Thursday. Higher snow amounts are expected to fall over higher terrain.

Regions across eastern Ontario including Ottawa have already received snow from a previous disturbance and will continue to see snow fall tonight and into Thursday. Total snowfall amounts near 15 centimetres by Thursday night are possible as the winter storm slowly moves east across the lower lakes tonight into New England by Thursday night.

The greater Toronto area will be very close to the southern edge of the heavy snow but is still expected to receive significant amounts of snow mixed with ice pellets. Depending on how much ice pellets form at the expense of the snow current snowfall estimates over the greater Toronto area is 5 to 10 centimetres tonight with an additional 5 to 10 centimetres Thursday. Regions close to the lake may see lesser amounts due to warmer temperatures along the lakeshore.

For further detail over the rest of southern Ontario please read the special weather statement released by Environment Canada.

Yeah I was listening to 103.5 this morning, man, those people should not have a lic. to drive.

Hey Brian, I was in your neighborhood a couple weeks back when those few inches of snow fell during the morning rush hour, and believe me, all the cars in the SOUTHBOUND lanes that were slipping, sliding & spinning all over the road weren't coming from Toronto :whistling:

We unfortunately have lousy drivers everywhere :dunno:

My 4 winter tires were installed this morning, the shovel is in the back with the salt, and the windshield washer fluid was topped up.....bring it on :thumbsup_anim:

10 to 15 cm !!! :blink: by Thursday morning for where I live ... I'll be ok, I'm driving my Chev Tracker with 4x4 and what's called a trail tire (great in the snow) {thanks Walmart !! }

My wife on the other hand, this will be the first time this year that she will be driveing the big old pickup truck with no 4x4. I hate driving it in the winter, after I got the Tracker. When I do I'm 'white knuckle' all the way. In the past when it was my daily vehicle I was used to it.

Bring on the Traffic Mayhem !!

It's amazing when the weather people start cranking out "the sky is falling" jeez every 30 seconds you hear it on the radio/tv, it's winter, lets get on with it. What did the world do 20 years ago, set the alarm clock 1/ 2 hour early, get up, and drive a bit slower. All the aching in the world isn't gonna make it go away.

And NO, don't call Mel, he'd probably try and sell cheap snowshovels on the side.
