My sister in law fighting for our outdoor rights
pics replied to mike rousseau's topic in General Discussion
The Binbrook Conservation Area is closed to non hunters during the duck/ goose hunt. It's been like that for a very long time but there are some who have to be educated when they try to walk in.. I used to man the gate 20 odd years ago as a volunteer to help keep the hunting program open.. these days the park employees look after it... you will have hikers who want to go in despite the signs and warnings... -
Saw a cabin cruiser out on Hamilton harbour yesterday.. sailboats last week.. winter still seems a ways off apparently..

Clean Disruption NF Electric Cars not that far away!
pics replied to Headhunter's topic in General Discussion
I love the look of the Tesla but there's a certain amount of Range anxiety with all electric cars.. if you had some kind of solar/wind charging system at home that would be cool but I think the chev volt is a better option right now.. -

It would seem that the influence of political attack ads have spread to the general public.. opinions aren't discussed online without mud slinging and anger.. we pick political sides based on either what our parents followed or our life experience be it good or bad .. the fake or embellished news stories we see online certainly don't help.. take all news with a grain of salt and be sure to check facts before forming an opinion ....

16 is the standard.. mine is all different sizes depending on what I can scrounge. Tree cutters rarely cut for burning size so I have stuff from 10 to 18 inches.. I also search out hardwood pallets to cut up because they are mostly dry and heat like crazy.. I have a high efficiency insert so 16 inch wood works best... they can be finicky depending on the wind etc.. -
I have both gas AND wood fireplaces .. the wood is an airtight insert that draws air from outside .. it also has a fan to to move the heat from the fire box to the room above.. The basement can be cold even with a hot fire due to transferring of heat.. The air temperature from the register gets to 50c but I have a drafty house so it doesn't cover the whole place .. I don't pay for wood but if I did it wouldn't make financial sense to heat with it. Insulating the house better and making it a gas fireplace is the way to go but I like the tradition of wood..

My wife hates fishing..lol. She would rather watch golf on TV and she hates that too...the bass will probably bite as long as the weather holds like it has..

Anyone else getting ready for the controlled hunt?

I enjoy the bow hunt due to the lack of yahoo trespassers.. my spot will be screwed up for a while due to them but thankfully we already filled our doe tag... -
If I was a betting man I'd say we are in for a year with lots of slush and white ice.. dangerous for sure!!.. early snow and a late freeze.. my annuals are still in flower and my neighbor has vegetables to pick. The trees have their leaves and most are green to boot..

Hey Dave, I recognize some of those characters!! .. maybe one day I will be off work for one of your events..lol -
Unless it gets really cold in November I don't see any early ice this year. The water temperatures are fairly warm still.. a harsh winter can occur because of the lake effect snow magnified by warm water..20 degrees over the next few days..

I'm surprised that the snaggers aren't around.. I gave up fishing for salmon because of those guys..

OK, I'll open the can of worms, US Presidential Election thread
pics replied to Old Ironmaker's topic in General Discussion
What happens in the US is always fascinating.. especially in politics.. compare a voter in California with one in Georgia and you would think you are talking about 2 different countries altogether ... -
I can tell you that in the last several years we have taken a big step back. 7 years ago I was making 15,000 more a year than I am now and housing prices weren't too bad.. in that time since we have taken a hit with health and safety, our pay and cola etc while housing, hydro and taxes have increased.. I remember making 3 bucks an hour bailing hay for my uncle in 1984.. in grade 11 I was paid $5 to paint at Sears and by grade 12 I was working 35 hours a week with weekends off making 6.88.. home at 9:30 pm, back to school by 8 am for 3 classes..
