I have owned and drive 4X4s all my life way back to the Old Blazers with out Snows and made the change way back and every Nov I change and put Snows on and remove in April and still do not rely on them but they are a Help when needed.

Absolutely Kelvin, there's no comparison when driving in snow between summer tires & good winter tires and people that disagree with that are the ones I like to stay away from on the roads in winter.

I remember a time many years ago we were driving up a steep hill on a country road covered in deep snow. I had a front wheel drive Buick Riviera with winter tires on all 4 corners and that car was amazing in snow. There were about 6 cars all over the road that couldn't get up the hill. I just wound my way thru them and climbed the hill like it was a warm summer day LOL

There is a Hill in the Hammer that l went up in 2 wheel drive with snows on and could not make it up. In my Old Blazer, Got out and put in 4X4 and away we went up the hill none stop. Always be with them on now come winter. If you get a Discount from your Insurance and you get in an Accident with out the Snows on they will not cover you as it caused the Accident in Their Eyes. Please Remember That???    That is why I have 4 Basically Brand New less than 500 km for Sale of my Old Vehicle that I bought and then Scraped.

Hi Lew!

I've always put winter tires on....not only for the insurance discount, but for safety.  Ever since I spun out on the 401 back in the 80's, I've had them!  They truly make a difference!  I found a guy who comes to my driveway and switches out my tires, my wife's and my son's......for $50 a car.   Yes its costly up front to get rims and tires, but if you live in Canada, they are a must.  I'd support them being mandatory.

Snow Tires for sure - and the studs should be allowed for anyone that wants to run them, anywhere in the Country.

If you have never tried a car or truck equipped with a good agressive set of studs in winter tires , you should.

I run an all wheel drive, with X-ice studded winter tires, better stopping and traction than dry pavement in summer.

If every vehicle on the roads was equipped like that there would be 50% less accidents in winter.

 

But as some previous post said, if it was logical and made life safer, our moron politicians will have none of it, unless of course, they somehow get another raise from it.

Winter tires are just another cost of owning a vehicle. With steel wheels, they cost $1,600 or so, and last 8 or 10 years. The all-season tires get fewer miles, so last longer, offsetting some of the cost.

My insurance co. gives a tiny discount. I am not sure they should be required, but if someone goes out in poor conditions and causes damage or bodily harm and haven't taken reasonable precautions, like winter tires, they should be held (ir)responsible.

Michelin Crossclimate 2 all weather. Year round tires and great in Winter.

They are legal in northern Ontario but not in southern with their thinking that they are too hard on the road surfaces.

I ran new all weathers on my F150 4x4 last winter, The all weathers I bought are Cooper Discoverer AT3 4S, which I like a lot after running for 14 months and 12,000 kms. They are better than all seasons in snow, though not as capable in icy conditions as dedicated winter tires. This year has been more snow and earlier than usual. I got a free set of 4 used mounted winters from my son's truck, so I went back to winter tires on the truck.

Wife's Subaru Crosstrek with Blizzaks is better than the truck, best winter vehicle I have driven.

My wife's new(ish 2023) truck came with a good set of AT tires and not an issue yet.  My truck had more of a summer like tire so I run snows.  Next season we will get her a set of snows as I already have the rims for her truck.  Where we live we have a decent, not huge but big enough incline on our private road.  Her hast car got stuck a time or two even with snows.  With the snow we get get in Gooderham we decided it was time for her to get a truck too.  We both have weight in the back of the bed's too for added load for traction.  And with my wife being an insurance agent we fully understand the discounts and what is acceptable.

That's strange, it's generally accepted that a dedicated 4x4 is better  than any AWD in the winter. Maybe it's those tires compared to your truck's snows or lack of weight in the box?

In unplowed deep snow perhaps, but I have never heard anyone say 4x4 is better than a good AWD system like Subaru or Audi on the road. And my 4x4 cannot be used on clear pavement or at high speed, so not great on highways, or black ice.

Agree. We have a Honda Pilot AWD and a Ram 1500 4×4. Slugging through mud, sand or deep snow, the Ram wins every time...locking differential and gobs of V8 torque... but on an icy, slippery road the Honda with VTM-4 (torque vectoring) and Michelin X-Ice rubber handles like its on skates at any speed.

Yea that's what I was basically referring to, deep snow, bush roads into back lakes, on lakes in the winter, unplowed roads during or after a storm. I'll take my truck anytime over any awd SUV for those conditions. I still carry a pail of wood ashes in both vehicles though for dealing with ice, nothing beats that for traction when you need it to get unstuck or pulling someone else out. My driveway and walkways get a good dose of ashes anytime we get freezing rain, makes it like walking on pavement.

Having had cars with winter tires and without, this I can say, they do make a huge difference BUT if the weather is really lousy, it’s safer to stay home and not venture out unless absolutely necessary. Far too many drivers out there that haven’t a clue of how to drive in snow, ice and slushy conditions. Case in point, a couple years ago, driving back from the cottage up near Port Carling, an early snow storm hit, driving was miserable from Wahta all the way down to the 401. A lot of drivers gave up and pulled over to the side. Others were literally sliding from one side of the road to the other. Saw at least a couple dozen accidents and another dozen in the ditches lining the 400. Had I known it would have been that bad, I would have stayed up at the cottage and tossed another log in the stove…..

This is a bit of a weird one, like anything there is some inherited nuance. I run big (expensive yeesh) all terrains on my truck, my truck in 4x4 with those tires is certainly a hell of a lot safer than a rear wheel drive mustang with snow tires.

My idea, buy one expensive set of tires that gets me through anything.

my wifes crv? It’s got winters.

as someone else alluded to…it would be criminal to make someone that lives in the Niagara region to get winters, they see snow on the ground 20 days tops these days.

Yeah, never used the snowblower once last year in Grimsby, had the present vehicle 3 years now , only 11,000 km , only venture out in good weather in winter , 16 years retired and with the cost of living going up , money is getting tight , not getting snows
