Folks, I hope I am not reading this right but it looks like Minister John Baird wants to make boat licenses to be renewable like a car license. His excuse is -

"They also introduce renewable pleasure craft licences in order to improve the accuracy of licence information for search and rescue purposes.

"The goal of these regulations is to reduce fatalities, injuries, and property damage resulting from small vessel accidents and incidents in Canada," said Minister Baird

Now I don't know how to start a pettiton online but I hope some one else can pick up on this. I think this is another cash grab personally.

Please see the link.

There are a lot of boats that were licensed before the age of computers and the paperwork is in some basement somewhere where nobody will ever look it up, so the idea is to get them on a search able file.

Can't be much of a cash grab if there is still no cost to license your boat, its still free isn't it? If they intend to charge a fee we have 30 days to license the boat.

I don't see how it would help with much of their goals as the license gives very little information unless they are going to change it.

ALL TAXES/RENEWALS..ETC... are a cash grab. However I hold the opinion that taxes are necessary to maintain the lifestyle we have all become accustomed to.

The money they get from this isn't used to fund some private club only government employees get to use... it comes back to us in one form or another. And to a large degree I like the way things are done here in Canada. Sure the government throws money at lots of things I don't understand or may never use....and that will never change. But lots of it also goes to stuff I use everyday and appreciate having.

Right from the start I knew that the boaters license was going to be a renewable thing eventually. Who could have not seen that one coming?

To me it's a small price to pay to get out in my boat and enjoy time on the water. Would it be nicer if it remained the way it is...yes it would. Hell it would have been even nicer if it went back to just being free with no card at all. But I'll happily pay the small token charge every year to keep my card.

It's only a big deal if you make it a big deal. I say go out and enjoy your boat and don't sweat the small stuff.

Pleasure craft

There will be no increase in the cost of licensing for pleasure craft owners as a result of the requirement to re-license the vessel every 10 years. This program is currently free of charge to the user and will continue to be so.

The cost to pleasure craft owners will be minimal and will be limited to a very small number of vessels less than 6 m in length, but with a freeboard greater than 0.5 m, that will be required to obtain a re-boarding device under the proposed Regulations. Consequently, these costs have not been evaluated.

If you want to read through it, check the link.

Right, its the # on the boat not your boat operators card. There is no such thing as a boat operators license in Ca. I can issue you a card that says you know how to operate a boat to the dismal standards of trans. Ca. but I cannot issue a waver from prosecution (a license). A lot of operators card providers make the mistake of calling it a license.

WE already pay people to man the offices of service Ca. so there should be no cost at all.

WOW, I am very surprised how many here on in favor of this Bull. In NYS I just paid $46 to register my boat (3 year renewal). It was $18 then DOUBLED and a $10 surcharge was also added = $46.

You know what I get now that it more than DOUBLED.........you guessed it NOTHING just like when it was only $18.

I read years ago that our government spends $1.31 for every dollar they collect.... just more WASTE of my hard earned dollars.....

DON'T let this happen.

And for those of you that need your GOVERNMENT to take care of you, you must still be wet behind the ears..... all your fellow Canadians are taking care of you.....Why can't you take care of yourself ? ? ?

I have a feeling this thread will not last long..........

I have a huge issue with the current card. Anyone can memorize the book, but can they actually operate a boat? I work at a boat ramp on the south shore of Lake Ontario. Some of the new people I talk with say they got their card, but have never been in a boat. If the boaters card is done with a "road" test, I'm all for it.

some company(at the Toronto Sportsmen show) supplying licenses were charging 60$ a piece and guaranteeing (no one) fails it....now why didn't they just sell them illegally on the streets!

What sucks is that the Government keeps proposing these lame ideas which tax the Canadian Citizens TILL death. I would really like to see something for my money. I can't even get a garbage man to pick up a few freaking card board boxes unless they are flattened and bundled with twine, I can't get through to an actual person at any government office without doing the automated operator dance, I can't walk my dog without a leash and license, etc...etc! It starts with implementation and it just keeps getting worse! The renewals will go up in price and we will pay more and more and more and where does the money go? More Conservation Officers...Nope...More fish restocking programs...Nope...more services period...Nope! But guess what? We may very well be co-owners of Chrysler! What a freaking joke!

I see several problems with your outlook.

First and forth most is there is a huge difference in the government taking your money and losing it at a casino. You don't have a choice once the government starts taxing/fees on something. You don't have to go to the casino but you do have to pay the tax man. TAXES never go DOWN.........only up.....WHY.......I guess there programs aren't working, are they....

Giving away money to welfare/disability recipients that never payed into the program is wrong with a few exceptions. However, it's the norm not the exception that is running you into the most tax country in the world.

Your country and mine have GENERATIONS of these FREE LOADERS living off of government programs and that is also very wrong. I only want to keep what is mine. I will take care of my family and just want to be left alone by the government. Stop telling me I have to pay even more for someone else to live... I didn't have 8 kids because I knew I couldn't afford 8 kids. Instead I had 2 and housed them, feed them, clothes them and sent them to college WITHOUT any government help..... If I can do so can you... Stop looking for a free money give away.

What if we ALL just stopped being productive and waited for the mailman to bring the check. What then ? ? ?
