How often should you repack the wheel bearings
porkpie replied to RickOnt's topic in General Discussion
That's cheap cheap for bearings /hub assemblies! Good deal on tires also. I'll have to stop in and load up next time I'm out that way. -

I run buddies, and drive it till I blow a bearing. I can change one roadside pretty quickly. Here is a tip, carry a torch in your boat box. Yes this is the lazy approach. -
Tips for catching carp in the grand River?
porkpie replied to Garcia96's topic in General Discussion
I know that guys go to extremes to catch them, but the odd time I've fished carp we just put a couple corn kernels on a hook under a float. Worked like a charm. Worth a shot. -
I don't know what your transom style is like, or how big of a hunk of wood you'll need, but I did the cottage tinner 2 summers ago and bought a big chunk of oak at home hardware. Worked great! Just use lots of 3m 5200 to seal all the bolt holes.

I'd have to guess bad gas also.

Great bike, it'll go pretty good with some chains! Have fun.

Bought one very similar on clearance at PA 3 years ago for $30 It's held up just fine. I currently have it as a cover over top of the snap on cover. I don't know if I'd have paid full price, but it works great for what I paid!

My son has broken 2 HMX 10.5 footers. I was present for both breaks. One was on a hook set, the other was on a fish. Neither was due to abuse, and both rods where nearly new. Both broke in the exact same place. We sold his last warranty replacement. At that point they had changed the design, but it was a bit of a turn off. I like fenwick rods, but the HMX steelhead series has left a bad taste in my mouth. I did buy a 9 foot eagle casting rod and ran it with a line counter all last season. No complaint with the eagle lineup.

9 footer is plenty for chucking lures in rivers. I don't use anything less than 10lb test, 12 sometimes depending on what I have on hand when respooling. No real recommendation. My hardware rod is 20 years old. Don't know what's available.

Sorry, NF, how do you get rid of Fluorescent Bulbs (mercury)
porkpie replied to Joey's topic in General Discussion
We just toss em in the bin at the dump here. -
One thing I forgot to add. Buy the US license in advance, or preregister with the DNR and have a smart phone handy. A lot of the time you can fish the Canadian side, but sometimes one side of the river is dirtier than the other, or their just doing better on the US side. If you have a smartphone you can go online and buy a daily license. DNR will accept a screenshot of your license as proof of purchase.

I'll be down March 30. Launch out of Lasalle, excellent launch, you won't need to pay at that time either, its not manned that early. There is a Tim's near by, but lodging is sparse, I`ve located a B&B nearby but not sure if they`re still in business. We generally sleep in the truck and tailgate. Not very comfortable but OK if it`s just one night. Despite what some will tell you, a 3/4 jig is about as heavy as you'll ever need even if it's windy, try to run lighter if you can. We have caught fish up to 40fow though, so sometimes the heavy jig is needed. Just look for the boats to start you off. Once you learn the drifts, and start exploring just keep your net low when your landing fish or you'll have 20 boats on you in no time. Your headed down at the right time for big fish. Mid april and you'll catch lots of good eater males. Good luck.

I'm amazed. A couple of weeks back we experieced the east end in fine form. Had a couple of twenty something guys in fishbum sweaters that crowded in to fish on a hole that my buddy and I where fishing. The hole could just support the 2 of us. They weren't even being dicks, really friendly but they had zero clue. They said they had had a very slow day, and couldn't understand why. We left them to it a few minutes later, we'd stuck almost every willing fish in the pool anyway. Literally almost every pool we walked past had a crew of "fishermen" with go pros set up all over, and where crowding each other out as well. I thought someone might ask us to sign video releases. It was an interesting day. Surprisingly we still managed some pretty good fishing despite the circus like atmosphere. Funny I never see much of that out our way. I'm glad to hear you met some decent folks.

I've owned humminbird, lowrance and now raymarine. The early hbirds where junk, but they've come a long way in the last ten years. For ease of operations in a push button format, I'd say humminbird is pretty hard to beat. I had a 597 and it was a great unit, I currently use a 385 on the ice and on the tinny at the cottage. I love the Raymarine touch on my boat, and its really easy to use, but they'll set you back a bit more than your budget. I never really liked the lowrance elites all that much, but my older lowrance greyscale x85 and x15 where great units. I think the new lowrance elite 7 TI touchscreen is pretty cool, but again a bit more than you want to spend. The humminbird helix 7 is on sale with a rebate for $700 and change at bass pro this week. That includes side imaging and all the bells and whistles. If I had to pick in that price range, I'd probably go with one of them! The screen is amazingly bright too and all the familiar humminbird controls. My non expert 2 cents.

My experience is similar to above. When I was a teenager I used to shore cast Lake Ontario in the spring and fall. I never caught a laker or a salmon in the spring myself, but browns and steelhead yes. I can't see why it wouldn't work from a boat.

Laugh it up, I did this exact thing on callender bay once many years ago with a brand new gas auger I was eager to test. I had no idea it was so shallow that far from the point I walked on. Ice was frozen clear to the bottom. Turned around and went in to a machine shop to have blades sharpened. Auger cut great for the first 20 or so inches lol.

Iced, gate is locked. As of today. I have to replace a trailer bunk lol.

I think we should stop stocking chinooks, they are only for the lake trollers anyway. Who cares about those guys.... oh, wait lol. It'd be nice to see the day when fishermen stopped throwing each other under the bus.

And they said it couldn't be done.

LOL

Had to run the snow blower in Wellington county!

I don't do reports, but we smashed steelhead yesterday. And we didn't even get out until noon. Hope that helps.

That's just a Jon boat with an interior. It would be fine for most kawarthas etc. But it will pound in a chop. Lowe boats are decent. A guy I work with is running a 2003 Lowe 16 foot V hull side console . It's a great boat, he's very happy with it. It's got a nice layout as well.
