  1. I vote for saving up a little more and getting the lowrance hds series. i have 3 of them and they are working very well. It seems that lowrance is doing more research and has made a more expandable platform based on the HDS series. Art
  2. You can wipe them down with wd40 it will get rid of surface rust. If they are corroded past that point unless the hooks and such have value VS time you will be mechanically cleaning and resharpening them. Art
  3. Welcome to the board we are glad you are here. Just remember to make sure Jeremy does not start taking pictures holding your fish to impress his friends. art
  4. Good to see the coldwater cats are starting to move around. We have water temps around 60F now and the cats are still off secondary points with a light bite on shad cutbait and squid parts. The move to shallow water is around the corner with the bass spawn and the temps going into the mid 60s the cats will be raiding the nests and feeding on the fry in the slightly warmer shallows. When the bite drops off in the shallows around 70F then the catfish have gone to spawn with food bites dropping off for a few weeks till the fry hatch. The key is mostly catching female cats since the males are guarding the nest and rarely eat. Once the 70s are solid then the fish are predictable and will follow a pattern depending on the availability of food and shelter. Art
  5. Look at the attack of a pike it bends into an s shape to spring forward it is using all of the muscles of its body to burst forward on a prey. Now ask the same to turn fast like a blugill and you will find it lacking. Art
  6. No matter what the governmental system is or whose it is there is a large amount of waste. I have no issues with a safety net that I pay into to help those that have been hit by financial issues it could be me even with all of the hard work and struggling I did to save while my friends had the shiny new cars...etc. I however am against the amount of money that is spent on those that have found a way to bilk the system with false claims or miss use of the process. I don't have the answer on how to fix it because more regulation spends more of the money. I have yet to see a government program produce better financial rewards better than a smart investment portfolio, The theory that a government can get 1.00 from each person and use that money to help a few is a waste of money that the masses could use to fund their futures. It would take a massive educational program and people willing to help themselves but in our society it seems to still be an impossible dream. Many wonder what the difference is between a man doing well and a poor person if both are given the same resources and tragedies in life. Big Cliff is a good example as some has asked how does he survive it is because he saved when he could and right now is making the hard choices to survive. With that attitude if he had not the trials that are before him he would be having a retirement that we all envy and want. The use of government resources to help him and people in his situation are what the system was designed for but it seems that the abuse of it prevents it from doing the job we empowered our governments to achieve. 7. I am not warm and fuzzy on this one. The mechanical portion is fighting itself in my minds eye. I would rather buy a paddle wheel than this concept. Art
  8. I give them a good wipe down with Lacquer Thinner to clean contacts without damage or contamination. Art
  9. I spent many a night shark fishing in the Chesapeake Virginia in the 80's. Loads of fun and a great eating fish as well with the correct preparation. Art
  10. Soooo your saying he is someone you look UP to? Art
  11. A well maintained unit does not lose 2% of its efficiency per year. Renting any appliance is not advisable it locks you into them maintaining the system at their convenience as well as nothing to show for your spent dollars. You pay off your system that you financed in 5 years and for the next 5 years you have no payments. If you save the money from the second 5 years you can pay cash for the next system. Art
  12. Here is some help for you amps X volts = watts watts divided by volts = amps start up load on a motor is usually 1.5 times the total amp reading. This is handy when figuring fuse size and generator load calculations. Art
  13. Make sure you put the heli coil in with an oil proof thread sealer it needs to be sealed since it is a set of threads. Check the thickness of what you are heli coiling it needs to be as thick as the coil is at least. in this case i would drill and tap it rather than helicoil it. Make sure you have the clearance for the tap to be threaded all of the way into the space behind it. Use a larger size plug. you can also tig weld the old hole and drill/tap another one next to it this will allow you to use the stock plug. Art
  14. I use a sock on my 28fter when anchored to keep me pointing in the same direction as the current. I send it off the back of the boat one sock is enough for most days. Art
  15. Good deal looks like you know how to talk turkey. Art
  16. In situations like you described if you do not have anything physically to add be it a fire extinguisher or medical aid you would be in the way. I drive a full size van for a living and carry 2 fire extinguishers on board hoping to never use them on my vehicle but i have used them on a few others cars over the years. I do it because many years ago I had all of my worldly possessions in a 1968 mid engine van and the engine caught fire when I pulled into a mcdonalds for lunch. I had nothing to extinguish it with so I went into the Mcdonalds jumped the counter and grabbed the extinguisher off the wall yelling I will be right back. It saved my van and its precious cargo and I went back in and asked the manager what I owed him for the use. He replied nothing just pay it forward. Art
  17. Yup my Virginia sticker get me a yearly visit on the west arm of lak nipissing they even made noise about my life vests not being Canadian approved till I showed them that until my boat was in Canadian waters for 90 days it didn't have to meet their guidelines. I however did have the few items that Canada requires that the US doesn't. I don't begrudge them checking me but to collect tourist money is really short sited in my opinion. Art
  18. here is a link to the MSDS sheet it accounts for 75% of its composition the missing 25% are considered not hazardous to humans. http://seafoamsales.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/MSDS_seafoam_EN.pdf No matter what you decide either to use it or not your engine will know the difference. Art
  19. Let us see if anyone has an answer to the posters question. This debate is not going to get better and it will be locked because of that fact. Art
  20. As some know I restore old motorcycles, cars and small engines just as a hobby and the number of carburetors I have rebuilt is in the hundreds now. The size of the jets and the passages in a carb. can be clogged by poor fuel and ethanol quickly. If you haven't been inside of a carb the passages as well as the jets are in some cases as small as a hairbrush bristle. The amount of sludge that i remove from the bottom of the float bowls that have been put away wet without stabilizer is just sick. I use stabilizers in all of my engines that will have gas sitting in it for longer than 3 weeks. The others get treated twice a year. For a motorcycle RnR on a carb set is usually $300.oo that buys stabilizers for many a year. Art
  21. well done Mike I wrapped my carpet around my PT boards to keep them off the aluminium 14 years ago and it is doing fine. I also do not put the boat away wet using open decks and a fan just to keep mold and deterioration from happening. Art
