  1. Well, we are starting to establish a routine which seems to be working quite well; up by 5 am, coffee and catch up on emails and such, a light breakfast and dressed and out the door by 6:45 (the pier opens at 7:00) meet up with a couple of the guys and head out to our spots on the pier. Fish until about noon (or whenever the bite lets up) then spend the rest of the day relaxing, shopping, or doing tourist things. I've been here 11 days now and so far only had one day where it rained enough in the morning to delay things. Temps in the most part have been well above normal, high teens almost every day with a few low 20s thrown in, anything above 0 is fine with me and it doesn't look like I'd be doing any ice fishing if I had stayed back home for the winter 😉 This is a different kind of fishing, you are always fishing in the same area (the pier is 1206' long) so you can move around quite a bit but it's not like ice fishing where you can just pick up and move a couple of miles. Because you are fishing the same area you start to notice other variables quite a bit. Water depth (except for the tides) is a constant but other things like wind direction, tide levels and direction (in coming, out going, or slack), water colour, water temperature' light conditions...... It's pretty interesting how subtle differences can have a huge effect and learning all the variations and combinations of those factors can change things significantly. Just like any kind of fishing some days are fantastic, others it's a struggle to get a dozen fish for the morning. We mostly use artificial bait, a product called FishBites seems to be the most popular among the regulars although some guys will use shrimp, squid, or cut bait if they are trying for sharks and things. We don't bother with that, we want whitings. Sometimes something as simple as the size of hook you are using can make a huge difference a #6 or #8 seem to work the best, whitings have a fairly small mouth, if the bite is aggressive a #6 works best because they don't swallow the hook as often and it's easier to re rig and get your line back out there. It's funny to watch guys coming out for their first time; most of them come out with a great big heavy rod and reel rigged with 40# + line and a hook big enough to anchor a small boat, they feed a lot of fish but don't catch much. If they are polite and friendly we quickly show them the ropes, share tackle and bait and they are catching fish in no time. The others usually go away frustrated and we don't see them again LOL.The guys I fish with use much lighter tackle, light to medium action rods and for the most part 10-12# test line, you do have to be able to handle larger fish, flounder and mackerel are rare this time of the year but they do happen and because of the tides we usually use a 2oz sinker. Well, that's enough rambling for this morning, time to get my day started. Tight line and stay safe!

  3. Don't you think you should include yourself in that, you're pretty good at it too. Doesn't take much to get you going, even when it's obviously just poking fun at the Leafs.

  4. a little tidbit about Gull for whoever's interested- there's an annual lake trout ice derby on there we've fished for a long time, 12 years ago and earlier, the winning fish would always be 8 to 15 pounds, the last 12 years there's only been 1 fish (caught by me, yeah I'm tooting my own horn, lol) over the slot, a 6.5 pounder, all the other derby entries are key chain sized, under the slot lakers it's a pretty lake and it's the closest of the pretty Haliburton lakes to the GTA, with easy access and guys posting stuff online about Gull, and lake trout aren't the most prolific species when the population is under heavy fire, hence Gull's current situation

  6. I was just texting about this I was given Fly By Night as a mistake as a 5 year old. Someone thought it was a kids album lol From then on I was a wannabe and eventually a drummer Neil Peart was the man. He could play any style of music on any set (Google Neil Peart Buddy Rich tribute to see him on a basic jazz kit) RIP

  8. I find Gibsons finest doesn't make me get the "whiskey rants" like some other brands I don't care what anyone thinks, and my wife fishes with me 90% of the time so no problems there. She'd rather fish than shop.....any day. She also hands me my ass pretty much every time we hit the water lol S.

  11. First episode was great. Of course Taro falls in the lake before even getting on the boat for the first time Hahahaa what a guy. i can confirm, people may think Taro is putting it on because he’s on film...dude is 100% genuinely that wild and hilarious. Fishing with him was an absolute riot and I am planning on going with him again this year.

  14. The front wheels/tires should run about 3 inches on the inside of the rear track's foot print. Shouldn't be an issue, with the front tires having chains on. If anything it'll give the fish hut an or the sled more packed down area for their skies to follow on? Dan.

  15. Yet this thread is allowed to go & on & on while so many other threads are locked for far less than what goes on here. Double standards are always a bad thing.

  20. I love my campfires too Andrew. I just got back from an ice bungalow, the kid working for the outfitter was helping us unload our gear into our bungalow, he grabbed something and said "what the hell is this?", I replied, a Turkish bowl, we like our campfires Another story, a buddy was arriving late to the community ice fishing spot we were at, when he hit the shore and saw all the people out there he texted "where u guys at?", I texted the reply "how many guys do you see with a fire on the ice?", smoke signals were sent out and received

  22. I remember the Ballard years. I don't recall the Leafs having to tarp over empty seats due to unsold tickets...

  24. If only they cared enough to actually pay for tickets, and attend the games.... Wonder how much the tarps cost to cover the upper level ??

  25. I get the same from people at work when I tell them I'm going ice fishing on the weekend. "You're crazy" "that's dangerous" Etc Always amazed when I ask "oh what are you doing this weekend" and I get the answer "oh we're going downtown to a club/bar" I tell them "You're more likely to be shot, stabbed or run over than I am likely to go through the ice"

  26. Dan, you should put a 1/4" UHMW disk between the two turntables. I used UHMW disks on my komatik's hitch to keep things tight but smooth.
