Woke up and jumped in the truck like any other day.Turned the key and just loud clicking from down near the starter.Checked battey at 12.7 volts, even through a starting charger on to see if that will help.It is a standard 6 speed 2007 Nissan X terra. It has the switch that you have to push the clutch in to engage the starter. That is working as everything lights up,and that is when you hear the loud clicking. The sound is defineatly coming from down by the starter.Any ideas why all of a sudden?.Any help would be appreciated, and Merry Christmas to all.!!!!!!

I would say starter is pooched.

Take it off if you can and take it to

Sounds like the starter, try taking a small hammer or big screwdriver and tapping on the cylindrical part of the starter, then turn the key.

Its likely its developed a flat spot and will need to be changed.

Tapping on it will get you to and from for a little while but eventually it will just give up.

Agree with tapping with a hammer.

Be sure all connectors are clean and tight.

If that doesn't help, begin hoping it's a failing solenoid, which is cheaper than a new starter.

Give the starter a few taps while someone is engaging it. If it was the old days I would say it's a solenoid first, starter second, with all the computers today it's difficult to say with so many interlocks not allowing the vehicle to start.

Thinking the starter to,but amazed no warning before this.Always smooth start. Will do the hammer trick,I have a nice orange hard plastic hammer/mallet that should do the trick without further damaging anything. Thanks .

Also to add, been having a couple issues with my remote fobs.If one of them were sticking, could that also cause a issue as far as not engaging?.

I would think you would get nothing at all Dave. If anything, your alarm would be going off.

For giggles, try to start the truck when you've got it hooked up to another battery.. Starters rarely if ever just die, they usually get worse over time.

Booster cables Bill?,I did change the battery with my boat starting battery with same results, did not use booster cables though.

Any chance you trucks battery cables are corroded and not letting enough juice flow from the battery to engage the starter ?

Check the ground strap from the negative side of the battery to the engine/starter motor. One test is to take a volt meter and go from the pos. and neg. posts. Turn key and see if the voltage drops when you are trying to start the engine. This will tell you if it is a loose wire (no volt drop) or a bad starter (fast volt drop) this test should be done no more than 5 seconds though. You also can take the jumper cable and go from the negative of the battery to the shell of the starter motor. If it works then the ground strap is bad. Check and clean all connections even if they look good between the battery and starter motor. The clicking leads me to believe that your circuits are good you just can't get the voltage to work. IE bad connection or brushes cooked in starter motor.

Also take your booster cable black at battery post other black to engine block easiest quickest way to confirm goid ground

So black to negative terminal, other end black to a good engine bolt/ground?,thanks,just want to make sure I have this right?.
