Fishwilly Posted February 23, 2015 Report Posted February 23, 2015 A guy I know caught this strange fish in the Saguenay River in Quebec ice fishing. Any idea what the hell it is?
kuhaman Posted February 23, 2015 Report Posted February 23, 2015 (edited) Some type of flat fish, small turbot maybe Edited February 23, 2015 by kuha
chris.brock Posted February 23, 2015 Report Posted February 23, 2015 I was expecting to see a ling, mud puppy or bowfin. That's a weird one for sure. I would guess an exotic fish somebody let go when they shut down their aquarium.
LostAnotherOne Posted February 23, 2015 Report Posted February 23, 2015 Researched fish in Quebec and couldn't find anything that matches that. I would let the ministry know. If it's a new species I would call it BBBUUUTTTTTTT UUUGGGLLLYYY
Burtess Posted February 23, 2015 Report Posted February 23, 2015 Looks like a cusk eel but I don't know how far any of those species would come up in fresh water? Burt:)
kickingfrog Posted February 23, 2015 Report Posted February 23, 2015 Lower end of the Saguenay gets all sorts of saltwater stuff from what I remember even the odd shark.
Roy Posted February 24, 2015 Report Posted February 24, 2015 It's called a snailfish. They don't get much bigger than that.
Fishwilly Posted February 24, 2015 Author Report Posted February 24, 2015 Roy I think you're right. Looked it up and it looks like a sub-species of snailfish. Freaky little bugger!!
bare foot wader Posted February 24, 2015 Report Posted February 24, 2015 so, how'd it taste? definitely weird looking, don't blame him for wearing gloves to handle it lol
creditmaster Posted February 24, 2015 Report Posted February 24, 2015 lol i woudint eat that if someone paid me to
cram Posted February 24, 2015 Report Posted February 24, 2015 Probably yet another poor man's lobster.
Fishwilly Posted February 24, 2015 Author Report Posted February 24, 2015 He let it go right after taking picture. Can't say I blame him !!
akaShag Posted February 24, 2015 Report Posted February 24, 2015 Hmmm, looks like a miniature Liberalis slimatae, of the genus Nullus Spinus. Could be the Justinus Givus Votus, but the proof would be whether the angler had to wash their hands five times until they no longer felt unclean............. Just sayin'.......... Doug
Fishwilly Posted February 24, 2015 Author Report Posted February 24, 2015 Hey Doug I know the genus of which you speak.....Maybe he shoulda flushed it down the toilet.
dave524 Posted February 25, 2015 Report Posted February 25, 2015 Hey Doug I know the genus of which you speak.....Maybe he shoulda flushed it down the toilet. Definitely a parasitic species, not to be returned to multiply, throw'em in the bushes like gobies.
