bass_man Posted January 27, 2014 Report Posted January 27, 2014 for the last 40 years I have been tying the improved clinch knot on everything, it's the only one I know. I like it ok on mono, but have never liked it on Dacron trolling line and I hate it on fluorocarbon leaders. I obviously need to learn some new knots, what do you guys tie for Dacron, slippery braid, and fluorocarbon? Thanks for any info you can give me. Jim
Gnote Posted January 27, 2014 Report Posted January 27, 2014 Braid i love the uni knot. Ive never had one let go Mono i use the improved clinch, and my heavy fluoro (40-60lb) for salmon i use a 6-7 twist regular old fishermans knot. Also never had one let go
chris.brock Posted January 27, 2014 Report Posted January 27, 2014 I use the clinch on mono and fluoro palomar on power pro and double uni for PP to fluoro lead (or mono lead) good post, looking forward to other replies
BillM Posted January 27, 2014 Report Posted January 27, 2014 (edited) Improved clinch for mono and flouro Uni-Uni for any type of braid > leader knot in which I don't use a barrel swivel. Palomar for straight Braid to swivel/snap. Nanofil knot (or double Palomar as I like to call it) for Nanofil. Leader to tippet (flyfishing) double surgeons. Edited January 27, 2014 by BillM
Dan668 Posted January 27, 2014 Report Posted January 27, 2014 San diego jam knot on everything. Braid to flouro leader - Alberto knot. All you need to know.
FloatnFly Posted January 27, 2014 Report Posted January 27, 2014 mono to anything improved clinch knot braid to lure i use palomar braid to swivel palomar braid to fluoro leader surgeons knot leader to tippet surgeons knot fluoro improved clinch knot
porkpie Posted January 27, 2014 Report Posted January 27, 2014 I use the improved clinch knot for everything including braid and fluoro. The only time I use another knot is for joining 2 pieces of line together. For this is simply take the tag ends and line them up flush with each other, make a loop and wrap the 2 tags around the line 3 times and tighten it up. This works on almost any connection. The only difference with the improved clinch and fluoro or braid is that I make a few more wraps as they are a little slippier than mono!
Ralph Field Posted January 27, 2014 Report Posted January 27, 2014 I use the San Diego Jam knot (www.netknots.com ) and the palomar as well as the double uni for joining lines.
BillM Posted January 27, 2014 Report Posted January 27, 2014 For this is simply take the tag ends and line them up flush with each other, make a loop and wrap the 2 tags around the line 3 times and tighten it up. Triple surgeons knot.
bass_man Posted January 27, 2014 Author Report Posted January 27, 2014 My dad taught me the double Windsor, but the army wouldn't let me use it. I appreciate all of the input guys, keep it coming. I've found a canoe man loop knot that looks perfect for crank baits, the loop will let the baits wiggle freely, but it doesn't look like it would work for big spinners where you would want a tight grip on the wire when there is no eyelet. I also like the looks of the polymer knot, but it could be difficult with that large bent spinner bait. Maybe the uni is the answer here. Jim
BillM Posted January 27, 2014 Report Posted January 27, 2014 If I'm running R-bend spinnerbaits, then an improved clinch it is with a flouro or mono lead..
OhioFisherman Posted January 27, 2014 Report Posted January 27, 2014 With MS I am waiting for the Velcro line to come out! LOL
LesCulpJr Posted January 27, 2014 Report Posted January 27, 2014 Double loop clinch knot otherwise known as the trilene knot for everything:)
wannabefisherman Posted January 27, 2014 Report Posted January 27, 2014 palomar for pretty much everything. trilene knot if I'm up to it I used to do the uni to uni for braid to flouro/mono leader. tried out the Alberto this weekend. Definitely going to switch to that.
fishindevil Posted January 27, 2014 Report Posted January 27, 2014 Paloma's and the same as Chris Brock above !!!! Usually only 3 knots !!!! And all the years of salmon fishing usually let you know what knots work best and those ones hold up pretty good I have had split rings tear off and hooked get pulled straight and the knots still hold !!!!!
wormdunker Posted January 27, 2014 Report Posted January 27, 2014 www.animatedknots.com Shows you how to tie all of the above mentioned knots. Good site to use on a rainy, snowy, windy, crappy day such as this past week end. Enjoy!
FloatnFly Posted January 27, 2014 Report Posted January 27, 2014 just go for the australian braid knot............haah yea right, try that one in cold weather
wallyboss Posted January 27, 2014 Report Posted January 27, 2014 (edited) Never seen the Alberto knot? Is there another name for that knot? Never mind found it " Albright" Palomar on Braid, uni-uni for leaders and improved clinch on mono. Edited January 27, 2014 by wallyboss
lew Posted January 27, 2014 Report Posted January 27, 2014 The only line I ever use is 80 & 100 pound Power Pro and the palomar does everything I need & I've never had reason to try any other knot.

lew Posted January 27, 2014 Report Posted January 27, 2014 geez.....you pullin in sharks??? It sometimes feels that way LOL
JoshS Posted January 27, 2014 Report Posted January 27, 2014 I'm the same as most - 95% of the time get by with improved clinch for flouro/mono, palomar on braid, and back to back Uni for flouro leaders. Just give your knots a solid check. Careful with the improved clinch on flouro, it slips if not lubed and synched down nicely but never had one break at the knot.
