Yep, find a local carpet retailer and you'll likely find a heavy duty tube at no cost. Cut to length and cap, I've found that the plastic lids from peanut butter jars will often fit beautifully.

I'm truly saddened by this news. While I never met Shane we had talked via the net on a number of occasions. I had hoped to share my boat with him one day on Simcoe but sadly that opportunity has now passed. My sincerest condolences to Shane's family and his many friends.

Yep, Bay City Marine. I've been dealing with them for 30 years for both outboard parts as well as outboard repairs I couldn't tackle myself.

I'm thinking the best fix would be to cut it off with a Dremel tool (or the like) as close to the last remaining guide as possible. Though I honestly think you'd be better off replacing the rod.
