I would like to welcome my buddy SKUNK to the board
grimsbylander replied to buick14's topic in General Discussion
Lets just not post anything about the bass opener 2011 lol. Hopefully, that's not where you picked up your username! Welcome aboard. -
Nothing as complex as this issue can be narrowed down to one or two reasons. The obvious differences in population numbers certainly play a part in the equation as does the firearms accessibility factor. To say one or the other does not contribute is silly. Determining the degree of responsibility is extremely difficult and in light of the fact it's people's lives we're discussing, it's simply semantics. I would guess that there are a hundred contributing factors that could be compiled as to why this kind of thing happens more in the US or at all. Culture? Exposure? Ethnicity? Military focus? Economic pressure? Man's inhumanity to man is nothing new. Only the techniques have changed.

Stock splake, they're edible. Wait, bad idea.

I know you've got it looked after but I should mention Xtreme Marine in Etobicoke for future consideration. Tony is excellent and extremely fair.

I grew up on Lake Eugenia and lived between Hawthornes and Cedar Lodge. My grandparents vacationed there in the early 50's and eventually bought a cottage. Back then a cottage was a one or two bedroom, wooden clad building with a oil stove and an outdoor water well you had to prime first. My family bought a cottage and winterized it to make it a four season home. Oh yes, and moved the toilet indoors! I think I spent a million hours fishing off the causeway. Rainbows, browns and specks...lots of specks! Oh, and tons of rock bass! From what I've read over the last few years, I'm not in a hurry to go back. I want to remember the lake the way it was. That stump field was incredible! Cedar trees still standing 15' out of the water, super thick weed beds, and cool clean water. Gone? Sad for sure.

This is a prime example of the one and only thing that annoys me on forums. Vance, you're an ignoramus.

I'm not sure how this works. Why would the Canadian government not commission, say Bombardier, to design and engineer the sled with the stipulation of future payback? Essentially, Bambardier would fund the development dollars required and if the sled was built and performed to spec, the government would buy x amount of machines enabling Bombardier to recoup their investment. Isn't this the way all private companies work?? I know we do.

No need to waste money on a trial. OFC members already know the kids mental state, why the cop shot him, what the cop was thinking, and what his intentions were. Somebody's at fault here and like most cases, it's probably shared. The judicial system will decide the balance. If people were able to feel the true sadness felt by the family of the dead youth or the fear and anxiety that must be consuming the officer's family, I believe the anger and frustration would be put aside and replaced with compassion...for all involved. Pray for them, right or wrong, they all need help right now.

Do You Feel Dropshot Weights Are Necessary?
grimsbylander replied to Rich's topic in General Discussion
A lot of it depends on where you fish. On Erie and the Upper Niagara, it's a snag fest because of the current and big lake drift speed. I would NEVER tie a weight on. It's the weight that hangs up 99% of the time. When I have to break off, all I lose is the weight and 1" of line through the drop shot wire gizmo. If you tie on, your knot is the next weakest link. Next, the pencil weights hang up less than ball types in rocks. Walleye guys who bottom bounce have known this for years. I'll use ball types when I'm fishing a soft bottom. It doesn't slip through the mud as easy and kicks up debris which by itself can trigger strikes. As far as slit shot goes, sure, why not. Just don't pinch them down hard and don't tie a knot on or below them. When they snag, you can pull the line through, pop on another and you're back in business. The amount of weight itself is also important. If there's current, I up the weight by 1/3 to 1/2 of what I would normally use in that same depth with no current. Using 1/8 in 30 FOW makes no sense because the weight is BELOW the hook and the fish do not feel it until its to late. In super clear water and using a standard jig head rig, maybe. Exaggerated, you could have a pound of lead and still have fish pick up you bait. Also, if you're fishing a 4"-5" salt impregnated plastic, they are super buoyant and the added weight helps. If you're fishing in and around trees, logs, weedlines, etc. you need heavier line. If you're out in open water fishing ledges and gravel patches, not so much. On Erie, when drop shotting I never go above 8lb and if the waters clear I tie on a 4-6lb fluoro leader. The rods and reels manufactured today are amazing. Why spend $400 - $500 on a rod and reel and spool it like it's 1970?? Oh, and tungsten...it's big bucks. It does make a difference in sensitivity IF you've got the equipment to compliment it. If you using a fiberglass rod and 15lb mono, the tungsten is a waste. IMHO. But with a decent rod, light line, etc. you can feel the difference between mud and gravel down 30 feet. Your money, you decide. -
I've only had it once. I now think it should be called poo-soon.

What does "call themselves pros" have to do with anything?? This thread has hints of "I don't want a bassboat so you shouldn't either". Yes, anyone can buy a bassboat and drive like a maniac. Is that not true about most fuel powered vehicles? Sport bikes...cars. The abundance of narrow minded stereotyping is surprising. If the act of operating or owning a bassboat were illegal, then the complaints would be valid. If this came to fruition the yacht, seadoo, cigarette and speed boat owner had better beware. Imagine heading to your fishing spot in your mandated 115hp four stroke while a parade of legal water vessels fly by. After all, they disqualified if caught operating their gas-powered engine without everyone wearing a life jacket, being tethered to a working kill switch, having a drop of alcohol on board, reported by ANYONE seeing them break a slow zone speed limit, or not having all mandated safety equipment on board. Earlier this year I was approached on the water by the NY state police on a cold windy day. I was the only boat out along the particular stretch of water. They politely asked to see my son's and my fishing licences. They were very polite and friendly. I asked if they wanted to see safety equipment. Nope. I mentioned that it was the first time I had ever been approached and I'm out 30+ days a year on the river. He reply was "It not you guys we worry about". I've had them drive around me to stop two guys in a 14' aluminum. More than once! So making negative blanket statements which target bassboats and their owners is no more intelligent than a thread suggesting a ban on 14' aluminum boats based on a few beer drinking, meat hunting, safety absent boaters.

What does the number of tournaments have to do with anything?? We have club tournaments with 4 boats. The B1 will have more than 160 boats. Zero knowledge = ridiculous statements

What's Up With Embellished Bass Weights?
grimsbylander replied to Rich's topic in General Discussion
If you don't measure perch how will you know if they'll fit in the pan?? I'd guess that the people weighing 3 pound bass and such are people that don't catch a lot, if any, of them. Would that tie into why they think it's a 7 lb'r? -
I love fishing tournaments. According to NASCAR, about 6,000 U.S. gallons (~22,700 litres) of fuel are consumed during a typical Sprint Cup weekend.[21] For the 2006 season, which included 36 points races, the total for the season would have been 216,000 U.S. gallons (818,000 litres). One environmental critic recently estimated NASCAR's total fuel consumption across all series at 2 million U.S. gallons (7.57 million liters) of gas for one season.[22] But!!! No fish were killed!! I wonder if the dude on Chemong is a nascar fan?

I throw 6-8 regular water bottles in the freezer the day before. They last far longer than loose ice in the livewells plus you can drink them!

Frodo, be careful you're not being too much of a hypocrite. People who walk or bicycle, grow their own food and live off the grid would want to know where you get off judging other people. Suggesting that what you do is acceptable but any more is irresponsible is arrogant.
-
Who knows for sure? Tournament anglers have to try extremely hard to make sure fish deaths are at an absolute minimum. A 57 boat tourney is 114 fisherman. I wonder what the mortality rate is for 114 recreational fisherman over two days?

What's Up With Embellished Bass Weights?

It's one of two things. Either the person is insecure and is so desperate for any sign of admiration to feel better about themselves OR they honestly believe its a monster and they're over the moon. Either way, I'm not about to "correct" them. I big congratulations will do both of those personalities a world of good. -
New Deep Cycles. Dekas or Kirkland?

Come on Pike Slayer! Lol -
Plan a fishing trip north of Honey Harbour on Georgian Bay. Dozens of props get taken off there every year!! Yup, the slender flat faced punch will do the trick. Soak it now with penetrating oil while you're getting the punch.

In 40 feet of water I'd be wacky rigging a worm on a dropshot.

I never wear a tether while fishing out of my bassboats-outboard isn't running. I always wear it while running, tournament or not. One thing that did surprise me, last summer I was swimming off the boat. I was shocked how hard it was to grab the side and pull myself up and in. And it's a bassboat! I could do it, but thought, in soaking wet clothes in ice cold water, not so sure. I'd have to board at the back using the cavitation plate in the outboard as a step. Since I fish off the bow, that means I've got a 20' swim to get to the back. I actually practiced climbing in. Silly maybe, but can you get in your boat quickly? Try it this summer in warm water with a buddy in the boat. PFD's are mandatory!

Let me play it out for you... Mike: "We'll Mr. OPP officer, I was told I need to buy another license or be charged." Officer: "That's crazy...and illegal. I'd can't wait to find them and charge them. There is nothing worse than people who fraudulently scam honest people!" Mike: "Great! And btw, they were natives." Officer: "Wow, look at the time!! I'm off duty soon! Hey sorry about your luck! Cya!!"
