New Shimano Rig... Line recommendations?
grimsbylander replied to danklegrand's topic in General Discussion
For people that don't haul around 10 rods with them I always suggest spooling with 10lb braid. Here's why, you can fish is as is and it is great for spinnerbaits, etc. around cover OR throw on a 6lb length of fluoro and finesse clear water walleye or smallies. Especially because it's a one spool reel out of the box. -
Art has very eloquently summed it up. Well written. I deleted my version as to not initiate a locked thread.

Bass opener! Where did the largies goo?
grimsbylander replied to cityfisher's topic in General Discussion
The shortage of largies is nothing serious. It would get noticed every year in Ontario if the season opened June 1st. I fish the U.S. side for largies every spring and shortly after the spawn and the males start disappearing from the shallows, it's time to go smallie fishing. It seems they move off to the first break and "vacation" lol after a hard couple weeks of spawning. In a normal weather season, by the middle to end of June all is right again and they're ready to feed. So it's back to the pads, boat docks and shallow weed lines they go. This warm water should get them motivated to strap on the feed bag quicker. -
Quickest way to start a fishing fight?
grimsbylander replied to Dave Bailey's topic in General Discussion
If you hold pike and musky up by the eyes before you release them you won't get your fingers cut! For all you guests on this website looking for tips...I'M JOKING!! -
Interesting and timely thread hsousa. My wife and I have been discussing this very same thing for a few weeks. The kids are grown and doing their own thing and a weekend getaway would be nice. Nothing fancy, it's just us and the hound. I just want to be on a good lake or/and have good lakes nearby I can trailer to. Looking forward to the responses. There was a trailer offered for sale on here a couple months ago...I think it was on Pigeon?? Wish I could find that one.

Sounds like the new couple retired from the CRA and decided to go run a resort. So the OFAH didn't "go after these people" and tell them how to run their private businesses, right or wrong, and so..."goodbye OFAH"! Haha Oh boy that's classic.

home furnace and central air question, NF
grimsbylander replied to chris.brock's topic in General Discussion
I just replaced my 4 year old mid-effiency furnace and A/C with a high effiency package. I did it because I have a friend who owns a HVAC company and only that made it cost effective. For someone looking to upgrade and not spend big bucks, picking up a good used unit is another option. -
I've only changed to red hooks twice and both times needed bandaids.
-
Thanks Roy. You run a deep cycle as cranking battery? What size motor?
-
Maybe I can get some help...I need to replace the cranking battery on my boat and I have to do it by Friday night. I just need to know what makes are recommended and where to buy. It needs to crank a 200hp and run an HDS8, HDS7, structure scan and livewell pumps. I've been told I should be looking at a group 29 battery with minimum 1000 CCA and 180 minute reserve. I'm hoping to keep it about $200 and anywhere from west end of Toronto to Fort Erie is OK. Hurry! Tournament Saturday and I'm starting to sweat! LOL Thanks!!

Your favourite method for sharpening filet knives
grimsbylander replied to Joeytier's topic in General Discussion
Step 1 - use knife until super dull. Step 2 - go to C.T. and price out stones, oil, sharpening systems, etc. Step 3 - notice brand new knife on sale. Step 4 - buy and use until super dull. Step 5 - repeat. -
I use the VMC Spinshot hooks for three reasons. First, much less line twist than tying direct with a palomar knot. Second, snags are inevitable and retying takes time so I use a 2 or 4 lb drop line. Using a less than half the weight drop line below your main line means only breaking off below your hook. Saves baits and hooks too. And remember you dont need to tie a good knot on the drop line. Tie something like a clinch with two wraps only. Third, the gammy version of the Spinshot is stupid expensive.

Not sure about the rest of you, but all those amazing gator pics have me pumped! I have to plan a pike day soon. Thanks for sharing!

I guess you've been told. Great area with lots of fish. 3/8oz spinnerbaits will produce bass and pike for you around weed beds. Jig fishing(grub tail) along rocky points or drops is good. I have best luck on those waters with natural colors. Good luck and enjoy your vacation.

Looking at those photos I'd say he's just letting you know the water is knee-deep, knee-deep

Thanks Rich. I'll give it a try one night this week. It looks like a great place to teach my son how to drive the boat too. That includes boat positioning with the electric.

Just wondering if pike are a viable target in the harbour. It's somewhere close by when lake Erie is angry. I'm not concerned about not catching fish necessarily, I just want to avoid being the guy in a bassboat upsetting people if there is truly not a pike population worth pursuing.

Mattress/Boxspring rooftop transport
grimsbylander replied to captpierre's topic in General Discussion
Adding a sheet of plywood is good cheap insurance. Even if you have to buy one, you'll use it for something! -
Let's hope if you're threatened it's a group of vigilante paper targets trying to avenge the shredding their Pappy got.

Even if the Canadian government was considering abolishing the restrictions on firearms in this country, reading through some of the commments on this thread alone would put a bullet in that idea. Pun intended.

That may be true but has nothing to do with the performance of either boat in 2-3 foot waves. Angler man., stick with what you want. The fishibility and versatility of a quality bass boat is terrific. It's not a "do everything perfectly boat", they haven't invented it yet. It sounds like you know want you need and won't have any surprises. The earlier comment regarding the size of boat is correct. I was told years ago that after I saved enough money to buy an 18ft boat, keep saving until I could afford a 20ft. Great advise. I did and have no regrets. As far as the manufacturer goes, it's like everything else, you always get what you pay for. Consider quality and resale value. Good luck.
