  1. Always with me excepy Airports and Showers.
  2. Don't know about the Civie ones but I used a metal (Mine) detector many years. You can adjust the sensitivity but the problem is that you'll start picking up Iron Ore. I found a 1931 Quarter when Mine training in Petawawa. It was buried in a Bare AAASSS Field. Kind of wondered about the history of the Guy that lost it. We used to plant mines for the other troop to Breach, and often would scatter nails to slow them down and forcing them to be complacent and make mistakes. The buzzing noise can drive a guy crazy with hit after hit.
  3. Hey Big Creek Dad, tell your lad, poop happens, learn from it and Soldier on. As you asked a simple Question, I will now address Canuck Fan, We Hear Ya, Your Right, and now your my HERO
  4. I have a solution for that one. Rip the last three pages out of his book when hes not looking. Seen it done it.
  5. Holdfast is a Radio Handle meaning Combat Engineer in the Army. You don't want to spell out to the Enemy that there are Engineers in the Area, or Starlite meaning Medic, Watchdog MP, Sunray your Commander. Kind of Gives it away on what might be happening. These days the nicknames really don't matter anymore with today's radio security, however nicknames still exist. As far as using my real name, I don't think so unless I know someone. I figure whilst using a public forum, probably better not to advertise who you are. For example being called a racist or getting someone angry because of my opinions or views as there are sensitive people who take things really personal or out of context. There are weirdos out there.
  6. Here's what you do. Call him in your office. You are standing behind your desk and you Ream him out on his dress and deportment. If he attempts to say something you tell him to shut up as you do not want to hear Idle excuses especially from an Individualist. Then you tell him that he is getting paid to be on time and at the present time he is a waste of Rations and a waste of tax payers money. At that time you have him sign a document that he UNDERSTANDSif he is late one more time severe corrective action will be taken which could lead to possible Release. In the mean time he does 8 weekend duties. Ensure you tell your Supervisor what you are doing because that individual will be stepping up for his eventual Release. Boy did I LOVE the ARMY. We knew how to deal with Malingerers. Here's an Army story. A Medic attached to us decided he was special and did not have to do Guard Duty. His excuse was....Its against the GENEVA CONVENTION to carry a weapon so consequently he was unable and it was illegal for him to do his part and secure our area of responsibility. It is true that Medical people carry this Card. I guess to protect them. Well I said OK, go see the Sgt Major and tell him what you told me. Well now, I heard this yelling, and Mr. I don't do Guard duty, was in a trench for 3 days straight. I love it when your supervisor has you back. Now for Reality, the recent Army as human rights infiltrated the Corps. I caught one of my guys Lying to me when he destroyed a piece of Equipment by being Lazy and taking a short cut. Because he knew I was investigating, he decided to accuse me of Harassment in the form of Abuse of Authority. His memo went to the highest command in the Unit then down the ladder before I found out and could explain his accusations. So begins the investigation, all my Supervisors washed their hands and stated that they could not interfere, which I thought was SPINELESS. Three months later I was found innocent by doing my job. Afterwards I asked my Supervisor, NOW can I charge SO and SO for Destruction of DND property. His reply was... NO because it will really look like you are harassing him. I SHAKE MY HEAD ON HOW WEAK THE SYSTEM IS getting to be. Moral of the story. Document, Document, and have him sign that he understands the consequences, if his problem carrys on. OH YA, before you get to this point, because its a new era, Have a Touchy, Touchy, Feely, Feely, Father and Son Talk with that idividual. Ensure you have a witness.
  7. Yup I agree with the last two Posts. Put the money in a house and get into the Real estate Market ASAP. Concentrate on the house only as a cottage is a luxury Item anyways. Sooner or later you'll be married and will want to live in a house near where you work. You'll be in the market and by then hopefully you've paid most of the interest. In the mean time dont be tied down on one lake or cottage. Explore
  8. A Yell in the school yard BRITISH BULLDOG!!!!!!!!!! not Boo Hoo he's harrassing me
  9. Thats funny. Usually I end up looking for the wife in the Mall. Seems she finds better Deals. But I like BPS for some unique Items. Like the Rod holder stand that I bought and the cool container for the worms I bought at a good deal. Oh I also bought a Bass Pro Micro Lite Reel, but mostly browsed as I really didnt find any big bargains.
  10. If you ever end up doing it the way my forefathers did it, Border the rink with wood or Snow- Bank. Pack snow where the low spots are, light layer of water to freeze the snow, then lots of layered water no more than an inch and a half till your ice is level. This all depends on how cold it gets. Come spring, youll have dead grass where your rink was.
  11. Lets face it, We could be Whining about the same thing in 2 years from now. As long as we pay the high prices we will get gouged or Excuses. I can't understand how CT can have as cheap sales as what they have been doing. But I'm glad they are. There are certain stores that will have incredible deals on fishing gear as they want to get rid of it. Prince Albert is an Example. 5 dollars on Rapalas. But here in North Battleford not one sale in the fishing department for over a year. Were talking outside the advertised deals. As far as Gas, we are getting gouged but as long as we are quiet, why would anybody lessen their pockets for the good of the Consumer. Remember the Ice storm on how some stores Raised prices on Naptha for a profit. As far as Bass Pro, I would make the trip, but usually never really found any good deals, but I found a Cherrywood Rod for 15dollars at CTC in Orillia. What is my Point, as long as we get gouged, shop elsewhere. Looks like the best deals maybe the Internet paying in US dollars. As far as these Car dealers now saying that we are getting deals for our high dollar, is that really True, or is it the usual end of the year deals to make room for the new year under a different advertisement gimmick. Do I sound Peeved, you bet I do. In the last 2 years gas shot up almost twice as much. Petroleum products are going up, Anything made of wheat is going up, now meat is going up because they got to eat grains. But here's a Kicker, we will get taxed soon on Carbon emissions, while my neighbor buys the SUV. But hey, we have a choice.
  12. Wow thats shameful, It wasnt really that long ago when you didnt need a licence in Ontario. Its pathetic that you got to have a bake sale to raise funds for COs Gas. As Far as Upsidedowns thread Outstanding thread? Keep up the good work. Maybe its time to fire the thinkers in the MNR. Make it an election platform. Its us or you guys that vote for these Idiots. Now I know why when I went through the Algonquin Park Gate the one and only CO would sit there in his truck by the Gate and watch the, you know who hunters drive by. He only stopped me incidently and warned me to watch for hunters. A year later same thing so I bought him a Timmies. Maybe it should of been Gas.
  13. I fished and trolled the Strait, along the shoreline on both sides of the strait. Went up river till I hit the Falls (I think it was the Moon River) also the Bay where the Park entrance is. Only caught a few bass and a couple of pike. I fished probably a dozen time for a season. For me the fishing sucked but the Camping is great. I guess my best accomplishment was when I first set out to camp and it got dark and it was windy. I dont know how I got to the campspot, but my map and compass sure came handy. Next morning I couldnt believe the reefs and Islands that I missed. Ill never do that again.
  14. I loved camping Along the Capt Allan Strait- But I got to admit, I think the fishing sucks though.
  15. Hey draft and trade for more Europeans, thats what Montreal is doing. As you can see they have a great future. I THINK NOT. No Im not Racist, Im just tired of no Grit Hockey, The trademark of European Leagues. Just ask Haley.
  16. Here is a helpful Link http://forums.cnet.com/5208-7813_102-0.htm...ssageID=2444309 But I recommend that you browse Consumer reports next time you pass by a Bookstore. I would not be too worried if I bought a Sharp, Toshiba, and Panasonic. If the manufacturer's Warranty expires less than 2 years you may want an extended. Consumers Reports doesn't recommend extended warranties because they believe with most electronics problems will occur within the first year. For newer type TVs, Check the Warranty and the Repair frequency in Consumers Reports when and if they print them. Stay away from RCA, not a good history
  17. And Remember, get out of you vehical and walk about 5 meters away from Metal. If you cant see, take bearing tell your buddy to stop and then move to him. Slow but it works in a whiteout. Or just panic and drive right into open water. Sorry guys, but by now I would think, he is toast. 70 yrs old, no clues, unless theyre keeping his footprints a secret.
  18. Now Cliff, where did you hear that from? I had to laugh also, Talk about tainting the storey here. Lets see, the boys regularly feed these fish, pellets no doubt. As Big as the lake is I can picture them at night jumping a fence and feeding fish out of a caged holding cell LOL This thread was really getting out of hand. I suppose that it really isn't that much different than fishing for Splake, Landlocked Salmon, or ever Great Lakes Pacific Salmon or any water-body that's stocked. I have a feeling that these guys may have a hand at a record Pike from that Lake. Whats so exciting about that fishery, is that the Lake is a Huge Reservoir ( an other hand from man) with a great future ahead of it. I'm hoping that they will build a similar Reservoir around the Battlefords here but there is a small, but powerful Lobby against it. I sure would love to catch some thing similar that's lurking in Lake Dief. I'm not surprised with some of the attitude on the Record Bow ,because I was called a liar when I stated that I caught my laker in less than a foot of water under 2 auger lengths of ice. My hats off to the Fishing Geek brothers giving their point of view. I know they wont have the last say, or change anybodys mind that they illegally chummed (or whatever) for their fish
  19. The ugly stick is 34 dollars at Walmarts I believe so the reel is 16 dollars. If the Reel is a Skakespere Sigma. I would say Heluva deal. By the way I have a Sigma and itworks just as good as my High Priced Shimanos. And the Ugly stiK, Best all around rod on the market for the price in my opinion. My rod is going on 10 years old now and makes for a good trolling rod. My Opinion though as I dont even pretend to be a professional
  20. 406_01_survival_eqpt.docAttached is something I dug out from the Course I used to teach for Advanced Winter warfare. Part of the course was survival. We would pair 2 soldiers togeather and Leave them in the Bush for 4 Days 3 nights. They would have only on them is their cloths on their back. One meal pack, a machete, their own survival pack that they were to make on their own. ( For homework each soldier was to make their own kit and turn it in unknowingly they to use it for their excercise). And lastly their sleeping bag with valise. We would Excercise for a week as a group and the last day we would fool the students that they were going back to the base for the weeknd off. Us instruictors would fool them so bad that we had them pack theyre kit on trucks. We would then assemble them and tell them that a plane had just crashed and they had survived. The looks on their faces was priceless. Out came thir survival packs, one meal, and their valise that they packed to go back to base. If they didnt pack right. Too bad too sad. We would then drop them off ever three Kms Blindfolded. Dropped them off and told them that thir movement was one Km Radius. Heres what I observed 1.The best shelter was a snow cave or lean to( A water proof groundsheet was invaluable to water proof shelter or used as a door). Any other Shelter just took to much energy and resources to make) 2. Out of 20 students say 2 snares per, only 2 Rabbits caught and one Porcupine for a lucky pair ( not good odds). Some ate their meal that night, others rationed to the last day. 3. The pairs that listened to what was taught, One collects firewood, the other sets snares , looks for water and food fared the best as long as their shelter was built before dark 4. Smokers were bummed out the most, especially if they had none after running out. 5 At Night, each person had a log or two beside them and just slid them on the fire during the night. A wood reflector made for the best heat 6. A durable Belt knife could chop small wood. cut foliage, tied as a spear, dig the ground, split wood, Much better to have than a pocket knife. A machete made the Medics job easier, because if they had an axe, I sure somebody would be injured. A wire saw worked great could be stored in a small container. safety pins were used as cloths hangers, trap triggers etc 7. Those that had their survival attitude, enthusiastic, moved around and kept busy. Did well, while others were close to quiting I'm sure. 8. A change of clothing( some took the hint to hide a change of cloths with their sleeping bag) and Hygiene not only brought on Morale, but also provided warmth) 9. Safety- We had one person fall through the ice, A burnt sleeping Bag(too close to fire) as well as a few minor burns and a knife cut) 10. Lastly, a compass, map, can help you avoid a situation, if not lead you to land to survive
  21. I here ya, Bro. Bettman has ruined the game. I always hated shootouts also. Just think a Gold medal was won on a shootout. But as far as the Buffalo game? 70, 000 people. UNBELIEVABLE
  22. Yup your right. Too many penalties if we play our game (upps I'm being Racist again). Unfortunately we are stuck with a coach that wants to win instead play our game. LOL just joking. For me its the game. And part of it is the link. http://youtube.com/watch?v=Tif4KaXsfCo Oh did you see a European, Russian, Swede, East Indian....NO... Did you see a Visor....No. Did you see a Prairie Boy, Yea, TO. BC, ONT . NEF, probably. But a European. NO
  23. I dont care who you are or what you are. A compass is paramount. Whiteout, darkout, Brainfart out. Leave it with your fishing gear. Also never solely rely on a GPS. its electronic. All GPS instructions will tell you that. Dont know if its been mentioned, but a good candle can save the Day, Use one match, Light the candle, then light your stove and fire with the candle. Saves on wasted matches. A candle is a bit of warmth, Morale, and light in an emergency shelter. If its made of animal fat, you can eat it. By the way I like this post. Makes you think, and see other peoples prioritys
  24. Yea there's a few that are North Of North Battleford here. Seriously give us some sort of Geographical bearing
  25. Excellent Pictures Mike. I loved going to the Laurentians to visit my Brother in Val David close to Ste Agathe. Mostly to fish Brookies in the Doncaster River. A spot beside Mohawk land (Hint). There is no lake in Algonquin park that could beat this place for Brookies. What I like about the area is the pristine waters and its less than an hour from Montreal. Lets see, what I know, Excellent bass and pike in Lake Champlain Vermont. Landlocked Salmon and Rainbow trout in Memphremagog lake, And walleye, Bass, Trout in the Laurentians. Not to mention trout in thee Lachine Rapids. Only 45 minutes or less from Mtl.
