  1. I stayed there for a weekend in August last year. The lake has Lake Trout, so I was planning on targeting them. I never did get out fishing though, it was just too windy to bother renting a boat. It's a nice little lake and the whole area has a lot of things to see. We drove up to the historical lighthouse - that was an interesting road to drive on. I'll check to see if I have a depth map for you. Good luck! edit: Gillies Lake Map (Scroll down to the bottom of the page and open the Other Lakes tab)
  2. I've fished Little Esson once, but never Esson. I'd be very interested in seeing how you make out. Don't hesitate to try for some Lake Trout. I've had plenty of success using a simple 3-way rig or clip on weights. Just use 6 to 8 pound test line, or even better braided line of equivalent diameter, 3 to 6 oz. of weight and a spoon or minnow bait - let out about 100 feet of line and your good to go. I used to stick with a three-way setup (three way swivel with a 1-2 foot dropper to the weights), but now I use either a clip-on weight I made with an alligator clip or just an elastic band. Simple and effective for guys like me who fish for Lake Trout maybe 5 times a year. Here's a map of Esson if you need one: Esson Depth Map
  3. Looks like a great trip! I don't know how you luck out so much with the weather. It's funny, as I type this I am listening to a radio ad about the health benefits of Chaga supplements, lol. What are the chances? [although, it's the Art Bell show so it shouldn't really be a surprise]. I never even heard of it until I read your report.
  4. The public boat launch in the town of Rosseau is really nice. We were up there a couple of weeks ago. I wouldn't say it's the most scenic lake [at least, what I saw of it] but I suppose it depends on what you're looking for. Lake of Bays is more scenic IMO. My preference is for lakes that are within or border Provincial parks. That way you don't have to look at cottages all along the shoreline.
  5. That's some serious I don't give a crap packing, lol. Hard to beat a nice day at the cottage.
  6. Looked like a great day. Good job on the video, I really enjoyed it. Your editing is very well done as well.
  7. I had someone like this the other day, but it was for hydro. They use young kids so I tried to be as polite as possible, but it was a total scam.
  8. Thanks for the report, I finally took the time to read it in full. I had hoped to make it to ORR this year, but didn't work out. Maybe next year. How difficult is it to get a booking? Similar great value drive-to places like Happy Day Lodge and O'Sullivans Rainbow fill up incredibly fast. I would be a bit intimidated fishing NIpigon, especially in a small boat. It looks like there plenty of options if the weather isn't cooperative though. Also, by Ombambika Lake are you referring to the bay? or the widening of the river?
  9. You will probably have to use a different brand of grub. If the plastic is soft so you will always lose tails to panfish. Happens to me all the time with the Gary Yamamoto grubs, which are excellent baits but quite expensive. I've switched over to Yum brand grubs for the most part and they work really well, last a lot longer and are cheaper. Consider trying some paddletail minnows as well. There are many good baits out there. My last outing I used a "Walleye Killer Rig" ("B" in the image below) with a Gulp Fry worm and caught several decent fish popping in through and around the weeds. Panfish tried, but never managed to bite off my bait. There is more than one type of Gulp Fry, the one I am talking about is 3" long. I've attached an image below. I am sure other worms would work too. I plan on trying the Gulp Pinched Crawlers and Killer Crawlers in the future.
  10. Not sure, but have a great trip! Looks like an interesting little lake to fish. Here's a [cleaner] depth map for you: http://www.lineonfishing.com/images/Ontario_Outpost_Lake_Maps/Sand.pdf
  11. A lot of people swear by salt cured minnows. I've always been meaning to make some, but have yet to do so. It's fairly straightforward and a Google search should bring up some good instructions. I am also curious how you're storing your worms. Maybe all you need is some adjustment to your storage system? I assume you don't have a refrigerator to store them in and they are basically cooked by the end of the week? That being said, artificial bait definitely works. I've had great success with Gulp minnows on a jig and Gulp Fry (the 3" worm type) on a Slow Death and Walleye Killer rig. Of course, 90% of my fishing is jigging with plastic grubs or paddletail minnows. I am currently partial to Yum 3"/4" grubs in white or pink and the Northland Impulse Paddle Minnow in Electric Chicken.
  12. Looks like a Minivan painted flat back with fancy wheels to me.
  13. You might want to consider a trailer first. They are cheap and not a big loss if things don't work out. Sure it's not the same thing, but there are some nice trailer parks that offer reasonable privacy. It's great if you just want to get away and do some fishing for a weekend.
  14. We used to go to Rice lake every year for many years when I was a kid. One year, somehow we accidently ended up with a Pontoon instead of our regular fishing boat. We were like, wth is that thing?!?! After using it just once we were hooked and rented one each year afterward. They are awesome to fish from and great for a family/friends outing. Definitely a bonus if you have young kids or a spouse that doesn't really like to fish all day. They are relatively slow moving [although,as already mentioned, you can get larger motors on some - saw one with a 75 last time I was out], but easy to dock and navigate - although, I had some problems with the really big ones, I usually rent the smaller 18 footers. I never liked trolling in them, so I'd say they are mediocre for that. If you plan on fishing/boating with more than 3 people/pets quite often, than it's probably worth seriously considering. Not sure I'd want to tow one around though, but I've never tried launching one. Some of the launches we've used I could see it being a problem given their size.
  15. Yup, last night from 2 AM to 3 AM a fairly big and noisy system rolled through here. A lot of wind, rain and lightning. It was a real light show! Didn't see too much damage so far though. It's quite windy out today as well.
  16. There's also Pagonis Live Bait. They are wholesalers as well, but I think they will refer you to a relative that owns a shop near by. Wherever you go, make sure to pre-order your flat. I forgot one year and managed to get a flat, but half of the worms turned out to be dead. It was also really gross going through the flat to recover the ones still alive!!!
  17. Might be worth checking out Buck & Bingwood, Twin Lakes or White River Air if you haven't already booked I always thought this 2-man super light special from 7 Lakes Wilderness Camps was interesting as well [which I am too fat to do!].
  18. Looks like you had a great trip! Have you checked out Nameigos? It's about 3x the size of Apisabigo. Never been, but curious about it.
  19. Some nice fish there! Perfect eating size too. Did you fly into Trout (Dayohessarah) Lake?
  20. Caught several in cabbage last week. Only small tail biters in the milfoil/coontail. We always focus on cabbage weeds when targeting Walleye. Generally you target the edges or over top of it though, not right in the thick of it. Although, you can rip bucktail jigs through it, but I haven't done too much of that type of fishing.
  21. Most of this I wouldn't bring to a lodge, but I would bring to a fly-in outpost where we were on our own: - a small tool kit for basic repairs to hoses, outboard motor, etc.. [wrench/screwdriver/multitool, duct tape, electrical tape, epoxy, super glue, fuel stabilizer, hose clamps, handful of screws/nails, some wire, sandpaper, steel wool] - a small medical kit with some basic meds like chewable aspirin/low dose aspirin, Benadryl, Immodium, Pepcid AC, Cortisone cream, Aloe vera gel for burns etc.. - a more "serious' emergency kit for the boat - fire starting materials/devices, water/water filter, emergency blanket, compass, flashlight - BBQ spatula, lighter/matches - having good BBQ tools helps a lot - mouse traps - can of Raid and Deodorizer for outhouse - a lightbulb or two if you have electricity - extension cord, power bar - heavy duty gloves if you're planning on cooking with an open fire often - a good lantern if your cabin lights run off of propane - rod tip repair kit - travel sewing kit
  22. The basically place the fish in a tank of water and measure how much oxygen was used [removed from the water] over a period of time. The data to support their conclusions is very weak. I wouldn't put much weight in this study. They need to sample far more lakes than just 4. Even within lakes you will have genetic drift that occurs naturally. Their stats look weak to me as well. Temperature [as part of the RMR measurement, not the lake temp] had a large influence on RMR and with an increased sample size any influence by "exploitation" may simply go away. Regardless, they need far more lakes than what they used to draw any solid general conclusions. Good effort though. I know how difficult it is to design and perform studies. It can be extremely difficult, if not impossible, to design the experiments properly.
  23. I find that behavior somewhat concerning. If it were me it would time for a BIG FENCE and a BIG DOG [probably an overreaction at this point =)]. I do think you're taking the correct approach. I don't know what else you can do at this point besides making your boundaries known to them. However, without really knowing much, the profile of this individual gives me some concern. Middle aged man that lives at home with his mother with an obvious interest in your wife. Maybe it's nothing and he's just really friendly and harmless, but maybe it's not. If it were me, I'd probably inquire with my other neighbors and the previous home owners about them. Of course, talking to the mother might be a good first course of action (which I know you said you did try to do ). It might be as Bill says and he is mentally challenged.
  24. That's funny. I was just going through all my bookmarks to try and find that blog. I thought it was interesting, especially since it's an "old school Netscape era" website. Couldn't find it though.
