Nipfisher Posted January 2, 2013 Report Posted January 2, 2013 (edited) Hit the hut today with Joeytier around noon and fished from 1pm to 4pm. Got into a few perch at the start and then around 2pm the walleye started to bite. We ended up catching 5 walleye and lost just as many. Caught close to 10 perch and lost a decent pike at the hole. We kept our 2 walleye each and I took home 2 perch while Joey brought home 3 perch. Good start to the season. Big surprise was $17.40 for 3 dozen Emerald Shiners. Edited January 6, 2013 by Nipfisher
NAW Posted January 2, 2013 Report Posted January 2, 2013 Good start? That's a great start! Hut in the same place as the past few years? Good stuff guys! Gunna make it up there for a weekend this year for sure!
Acountdeleted Posted January 2, 2013 Report Posted January 2, 2013 Oh man. Great catch. Glad to see the fish are biting up there.
cram Posted January 2, 2013 Report Posted January 2, 2013 Big surprise was $17.40 for 3 dozen Emerald Shiners. Have you tried Bowman's bait? I don't know what he carries in the winter, but in the summer his prices are great and quality is really high.
Rod Caster Posted January 2, 2013 Report Posted January 2, 2013 Great job guys! Freeze any leftover minnows you have this year. It's not worth throwing the leftovers on the ice anymore. or... do you have an aerator system for you garage Blair I know you have plenty of minnow traps.

I do have an aerator system in the garage but nothing works better then keeping them under the ice.

I don't know what he carries in the winter, but in the summer his prices are great and quality is really high. Cram, I am pretty loyal to Discount Bait at the corner of Trout Lake Rd. and the by-pass. However, Billy Bob's is selling 3 doz for $10 so I may have to visit Billy when these run out. The advantage of Discount Bait is they treat me well and I average 15-18 minnows per dozen. They have also permitted me to buy bulk by the pound for our annual GTG.

I thought about grabbing the 2 shiners in the belly of one of the walleye I cleaned. Joeytier will tell you I needed all 3 chances to get the bugger.
RickOnt Posted January 2, 2013 Report Posted January 2, 2013 Fantastic opener Fresh Perch and Walleye for dinner Nothing better Rick
asdve23rveavwa Posted January 2, 2013 Report Posted January 2, 2013 Sooooooooooooo jealous!!! Nicely done!
Roy Posted January 2, 2013 Report Posted January 2, 2013 I'm never jealous of anyone but you can bet your bippy that I'm envious as hell of you and Joey, Blair. Great report, thanks for sharing it with us.
Nipfisher Posted January 2, 2013 Author Report Posted January 2, 2013 Great update. How thick is the ice? 7" of ice as of yesterday but going to be close to 9" by the weekend.
Joeytier Posted January 2, 2013 Report Posted January 2, 2013 Great start indeed...I'm off to freeze my cahonies off sans-hut on a new spot this evening.
wormdunker Posted January 2, 2013 Report Posted January 2, 2013 Thanx for the report Blair. Sounds like the walleyes were cooperating. I'm back in Fonthill after a 6 month stint in Fort McMurray. Hopefully I can make to your area this winter.
misfish Posted January 2, 2013 Report Posted January 2, 2013 Sweet Blair. Maybe I,ll tag along with Nick.
Christopheraaron Posted January 2, 2013 Report Posted January 2, 2013 Nice! That's the way to kick off a new year!
Nipfisher Posted January 2, 2013 Author Report Posted January 2, 2013 Sweet Blair. Maybe I,ll tag along with Nick. Any time Brian. It's nice when you can drive right to the hut.
Bernie Posted January 2, 2013 Report Posted January 2, 2013 Great fishing guys! Heard through the grapevine there is a big fish shack needing rescue out of the lake today. So the ice is a little thin in spots yet. Be careful out there.
Moosebunk Posted January 2, 2013 Report Posted January 2, 2013 Quite the hat lad! And methinks you put your hut on the right spot too.
Joeytier Posted January 3, 2013 Report Posted January 3, 2013 Thanks...its 100% species at risk fur...
TJQ Posted January 3, 2013 Report Posted January 3, 2013 I remember that hut!! Great Report!! I gotta get out!!
Nipfisher Posted January 4, 2013 Author Report Posted January 4, 2013 A buddy and I hit the hut just before 10am this morning. Fished until 4:30 and ended up icing 11 walleye (kept our 4), 26 perch (kept 9), 1 pike. Stories for the day are lost a big pike on head shakes when he cut my line. Lost a HUGE walleye for Nipissing when the hook popped out as I tried to drag it up on the ice. My guestimate was between 6 and 7 lbs. based on size of head but never saw the length so could have weighed more. She had shoulders. I tried my best and put my arm in the hole to my elbow and had the fish pressed against the underside of the ice. All released walleye were 13" or smaller.
Rod Caster Posted January 4, 2013 Report Posted January 4, 2013 That's great Blair! Too bad about Mr. Headshakes. Sounds like it was a haawwwg. No point in moving your shack, unless the fishing slows down.
Leecher Posted January 4, 2013 Report Posted January 4, 2013 Couple of nice reports Blair Good to hear that the walleyes are being cooperative despite the negative talks about the fishery
