French River (Wolseley Bay area) - advice
Headhunter replied to sneak_e_pete's topic in General Discussion
Hey Pete, I was up in that area from July 13-20th of this year. That was the week of the heat wave and fishing was tough all week, except the thursday, when the front went through. We stayed at Moonlight Bay Cottages, just outside of Alban, which is only a few KM's from where your going. Smallies seemed to be the only fish willing to cooperate consistantly. Water levels were at their norm for this time of year. The deer flys were murder during the day and the usual skitters and black flies as evening arrived. Our week turned into more of a family vacation, then a fishing trip. The heat was too much, even early in the day. We did have a blast and plan on going again next year, but it wouldn't be my first choice for a fishing destination. HH -
Where are the trophy pike pics?!!!!! LOL Great shots and great fish... thanks for posting! HH

Anyone had a fishing outing like this?

I would almost agree, except there were no bees in the video and I don't think the guy lost a tooth either... just sayin. Randy has this guy beat hands down! HH -
Thanks for the reply Drew... Fogat Live was the album that caught my attention, which of course meant getting all their others as well! Figured a fish of that size would have to put up a good account of itself. BAck in London in my youth, we would target them using either floating jointed Raps or loading up a treble hook with pin head minnows and hanging that about 6 inches below a float. We could watch them feeding on schools of bait, their snouts popping out on the water's surface and cast the bait a close as possible. Many a frustrating time keeping them hooked, that's when we started to use the treble/minnow combo. They did get airborn from time to time giving us a first hand look at how they toss your bait back to you! I wish we had come across some bigger fish like yours, but even the small ones are quite interesting to get up close and personal with. Thanks again Drew, awesome post!! HH

I thought it looked more like Terry, until I saw that he did catch a fish! HH -
Hey Bunk, fantastic report and pics! Got a question for yah... In my youth, growing up in London, we used to catch many a gar at the Springbank Dam, but none in the sizes you are catching. Mostly 24 inches or less and never did I spot anything bigger. Those small gar simply didn't have a chance to fight, or couldn't. Once we got their nose in the air, they were just motorboated in. Fun way to pass some time and have some action, but not really any kind of "sport". Curious as to how those obviously bigger gar scrap... Thanks, HH

I haven't fished it myself, but my brother has a bud who has a family cottage on it and he fishes it a couple of times a year. According to him, a jig and a minnow will keep the fish biting all day! Colour doesn't matter, it's all minnow all the time. HH

He probabaly stole the rod out of the hands of a fellow angler... Vlad believes that anything that gets handed to him, is his. "Hey buddy, nice ring!" HH

Have been looking for this report since before I went on vacation to the French! Looks like a great time, with plenty of fish and great weather. Glad it worked out for you guys and give my best to Ken in his recovery. HH -
A number of years ago, my buddy was getting married and the stag was going to be in Niagara Falls New York. We took a bus from Toronto and had many a beverage on the way... the only real challenge we had, no bathroom on the bus. By the time we got to the hotel, there were 25 guys bustin for a pee. The hotel was right beside the American Falls, so we thought it would be a good idea for all of us to have a pee over the falls. Must have been quite the sight having 25 guys leaning up against the rail doing their business, because it didn't take long for the local constabulary to show up. After explaining that we were all part of a stag, they decided not to fine us... it helped that the groom had a bowling ball chained to his leg! We got off with a warning. So, no it is not legal to pee over the falls, but dam it was fun! HH

Off on family vacation to the French!

Thanks and funny you mention that Roy... Thursday next week, I have to drive my daughter to Kearney for a week of camp. That'll put me only a few minutes from Powasson and driving right by TJ's as well! Timing won't be right for dropping in on Bernie though...by the time I go by, he'll already be sitting at the cottage enjoying the view! HH -
Well folks, I hope you all have a great week! My family and I are heading up to the French River tomorrow for a week of fun and fishing! My family first started to go to this place (Moonlight Bay Cottages) in the early 70's. Cut my teeth fishing there and have been back numerous times since then. I figured that it would be a great place for my kids to learn a few things, like dock fishing and what not. Anyway, I will be posting some pics when we get back, likely of the panfish type, but one never know for sure, do they. Have a great week folks and see yah when we get back! HH

Jack can take Gerritt's spot at Quinte this fall, he's a better netman! That said, he's tougher than me when it comes to leeches!!!! Great video, thanks for posting! HH

I hope you don't mind, but I named the spider "Ziggy". Must be from Mars. HH -
Think the prices might go up at the ACC? They keep this up and the average guy might not be able to afford tickets to a Leaf game! HH

True enough... and it's nice to see that the Habs have kept to their height restrictions on their forward lines! LOL HH

Garbo didn't miss any games that I know of from concussion, yet. Not questioning his work ethic as much as I am questioning his skill level and potentially his intelligence. His concussion issues will become apparent in a few years. How many times last year did we see the camera show Garbo's eyes looking like fry pans on the bench? I also have a suspect that (and I have no evidence to support this) he may have been a poor influence on some of the teamates. Again, just a feeling I have! HH

Garbo is a walking example a concusion. Does anyone really think that he could continue to take/absorb the kind of punishment he was taking and continue to be an effective player? How many nights did we all sit around the TV watching him getting slammed? Would you invest $20 mill in a player who many times, didn't know his own name at the end of the game? IMHO, getting rid of Garbo was a shrewd move. HH

Nice and clear Brian, very cool! I noticed that you were able to get footage of "The World's Greatest Sport Fish"... consider yourself fortunate. HH -
The Habs need to go out and draft some spines! You know, the kind that are attached to the back of the player so they don't lie down when the going gets tough... never mind, they don't know how to do that! HH

Can we train them to chase Cormorants Rich! HH

I wonder how long this dispute will take to fizz out? Alternatively, why not stand outside the plant and toss Mentos at the plant! HH

Chicken liver... and left overs make a fine feast in the morning with some eggs and Frank's hot sauce! HH

I have a self propelled Honda mower I inherited from my Dad. It's gotta be 15 years old and it starts on the first pull, every time. I am running gas I bought for it in 2011 through it, with no stabilizer. I have left it half full over the winter, it's never seen Seafoam and I have not changed the plug, oil filter or oil in the six years I've had it! Dang, I guess I can't really bring anything to this discussion except... You guys are babying your stuff too much! LOL HH
