  1. Thanks for the help guys. As an update we ordered the Amana with the bottom freezer with the pull out drawer rather than one with a swinging freezer door, (seems easier to get at the ice cream) From what I can tell the Amana is the same as Whirlpool except for the name tag glued on the door. The info on LG helped to make the decision. Bought it at the Home Depot after they price matched, got a buck and a half off!
  2. Good post Rich, nice to see the pictures.
  3. Looks like it could be time to hand the wallet over to a salesman and buy a new fridge. I've managed to nurse the old one along for about the past 5 years or so but now am at the end of my rope. Stupid thing decides it wants to run and run and run freezing everything in it. Thought I figured it out, made a trip to the grocery store again to stock up the Maytag and Wham! Does it again Tried moving the freezer contents around, checked for fan operation, cleaned out the vent at the front of the evaporator pan and no difference, got the freezer temp down to about 2 or 3 and the fridge at less than 1 now. Seems to be cycling off and on right now but I don't trust it. I am assuming the thermostat is fried. So, is there any preferences out there? looking at an LG with a bottom freezer pull out drawer and an Amana with the same features, not stainless but in white. Thing I like about the old one is the quietness of it. It would be nice if we have to buy a new one it is as quiet. However dependability and long life is important. Thanks for any comments.
  4. Lew, I joined up for a comp (point)card this past year, 2010, maybe that's why they sent me a catalogue.
  5. Got mine a few days ago too. That quote reminds me...When I was a small little guy I used to look forward to the day the Sears catalogue would show up in the mail hmmmm, the pretty pictures eh :rofl2: Maybe ya have to be old to understand...
  6. My father was an Ironworker mostly involved with large machinery and structural work. As he reflected back on his past he said that joining the Ironworkers was the best thing he ever did and he really enjoyed it. But I can still remember him getting up early and dreading the coming day especialy in the winter working on the Hamilton Bayfront or elewhere outside in the cold. Guess the good memories outshone the bad ones....oh yeah and the money was good. Too bad I didn't take his advise some 30 + years ago! All the best traveling along your new path.
  7. Sorry to hear of the bad news Rick. May peace be with him and all the best to your Grandmother.
  8. Been up for awhile. First day back to work after vacation, haven't been on the floor since Dec. 20th/10. Ya you got it...I'm really looking forward to getting back to it If I ever get around to downloading the pictures I'll post some of them.
  9. I'm agreeing with Cookslav to a degree. That is if this is a legit tale, we are all fishermen...remember that 57" pike caught on the ultralite spinning outfit rigged for perch the guy caught in the storm overflow pond story? No not a true story but I think you get the drift. If this incident played out as said then there is propably a reason for it to have happened that way and I feel for the employee that had to clean the chair seats after they left.
  10. HOW TO START EACH DAY WITH A POSITIVE OUTLOOK: 1. Open a new file in your computer. 2. Name it "Michael Ignatieff". 3. Send it to the Recycle Bin. 4. Empty the Recycle Bin. 5. Your PC will ask you: 'Do you really want to get rid of "Michael Ignatieff?" 6. Firmly Click 'Yes.' 7. Feel better? GOOD! ----- Tomorrow we'll do "Jack Layton"!
  11. Check in with Fishmaster, member on this board as well as other boards. He has a tackle shop and a charter business, both by that name, on the lower Grand just past the beer store and over the tracks. He can send you the right way. I have never been on the ice but he and others around here could be helpful. All the best.
  12. We have far too many rules and regs for the cops and courts to deal with as it is. Adding this to the books won't help. I still maintain it's not so much the type of tread but the way one drives. Common sense and the realization that it's snowy and icy makes a world of difference as well as the cars steering and brake condition. Guess it's easier to pass a new law than it is to teach people how to drive. Not saying they don't help but common sense is always good. I drove an Aerostar, rear wheel drive only, for 13 years. Never had a snow or winter tire on it, ever. Was it tricky to drive? Sure at times but skill and awareness kept me out of dumb situations and the fact I always had decent all seasons on it and 100 pounds of sand in the rear end. Usually replaced the tires in the fall of the year when needed. The present car is a front wheel drive with new Continental all seasons on it, so far it handles fine, I may consider winters next season, I'll see, but then again so far this year the Hammer hasn't seen enough snow to complain about. The kid on the other hand needed new tires and put a set of 4 cheap winters on his front drive Cougar, he says it handles great! Mind you I've never heard of HiFly tires before, but the tire shop convinced him they were just as good as the brand name and he is happy.
  13. Also my understanding. I put no faith in theses guys. Went into a house in N. Oakville several years ago, the woman said that her living room wndow glass was fogged up in between the glass. Pull up in front of this large brick home, first think I do is look at the windows from the car while I'm pulling up as always to see what's happening. The living room window's soldier brick sill is laying crumbled in the garden. I go in and pull back the curtains and there is literaly no drywall beneath the window! The studs, insulation is moldy. "Miss, you have a little more than a sealed unit failure, the entire window and wall is shot, and this has been going on for a lot longer than a few weeks." She says that they just bought the house a couple of months ago. So I ask why didn't they see this then? I mean the sill is laying in your garden, which BTW was nothing but a dirt patch with a tiny shriveled evergreen to one side. Her answer was they had trusted the home inspector's report and there was not a word about that in it. When I told her to sue him the answer was the fine print stated that they were not responsible for errors, they had no recourse. Ever since I have had no trust.
  14. Looks like you have a good background BB. I still think you aren't going to get anywhere in regards to the storm door though. As far as a handshake deal I never entered into them, contracts not only protect the customer but they also protect the contractor. Any misunderstandings are addressed and there is always something to go back to for proof of you said or I said what....no matter how small the deal. It used to bug the crap out of me when ever I lost a deal to someone else over price and I got a chance to read their agreement, if they had one that is, there were never any details spelled out. There are a couple of companies that come to mind around here that would fill out a window contract like this: Replace 5 windows in house, total $ "whatever the amount." That would be it! Usualy on follow up opportunities I would see how disapointed the customer was. All the best BB
  15. What do you expect? You got cheap labour from a guy that is at best a handyman. You should have had him finish the job properly and then pay when you're satistied. Now I betcha the guy has no license, insurance or workers compensation. The guy obviously over foamed it and he should have at least trimmed the excess foam after it had completly expanded before continuing on. Sorry if I offend you but as some of you know windows and doors have been my main employment for about 20 years. I get ticked off when I hear of people that try to cheap out and hire a cowboy to do the job. Let it be a lesson to others to do your research then decide who will do the job. Where I live a typical steel door with installation will run $1300 or more depending on door quality, doorlite (glass,) options and whatever is required to do the job right. Not only that I decided to take on an hourly paid job abuot a few years back in the Millwork dept. of a big box store and have to put up with so called "handymen" every day. The guys who come in and are clueless, then they go out and take hard earned money from some sucker that knows no better. A home owner that is trying to learn and is full of questions is all good and I love to help them along, but I hate to have to deal with clowns that haven't the foggiest idea of how to use a square or hold a level that come in and purchase a product then go out to some poor buggers house and get paid for being stupid. We are all being inundated by these "expert craftsmen" with the poor economy. So many out of work guys are picking up a hammer and doing small jobs to make a buck but are only screwing not only the paying homeowner but the legit construction industry. Sorry for ranting Billy Bob, I do wish you all the best getting the door matter straightened out. As for the storm door being hinged wrong you don't have much recourse if you have nothing on paper. And I admit it, I got screwed around on my garage roof because I was being a tightwad and got someone to reshingle it and then had to raise hell to get it done right.
  16. That made me laugh! Thanks for adding a little humour to the post. Like that works! More bad drivers on the road today than ever.
  17. Did you all notice what Spiel said? Did ya, now did ya? Ha did ya? See the Hammer really is a beautiful place! And you all thought we were nuts to be here! HA! Na na na na na naaaa..... But wait, we will get ours yet and when we get it look out! It's only a matter of time till the winds change to the east and wammo!
  18. 98% OF CANADIANS SAY "OH crap" BEFORE GOING IN THE DITCH ON A SLIPPERY ROAD. THE OTHER 2% ARE FROM NEWFOUNDLAND AND THEY SAY, "HOLD MY BEER AND WATCH THIS."
  19. All the best to your wife. Hope that they are wrong too. My wife went through a scare a couple of years ago, went through bunch of tests at the cancer clnic and had several follow up visits and found out that the Doc's assumption was wrong,(had me pretty worried for awhile) it does happen. If she is going to Juravinski Cancer Centre she is in good hands.
  20. Dunno Wayne, all I know about thr area is that my mothers aunts and uncles all had places right on the river in Galt when I was really young. In fact a park on the river is in their family name. "Barradell Loft", the old limestone ruins from the area's industrial hayday. link to it From the below link: "Barradell’s Loft is named for Jack Barradell, an English immigrant who organized the Galt Pigeon Club in 1920 and served as its president for 47 years. Barradell was a pigeon breeder and racer for more than 74 years, and one of his pigeon’s named Miss Galt held the speed and distance record for Canada and the British Isles, going from Galt to Oklahoma City, Texas, a flight of 1,066 miles in three days, 10 hours an 15 minutes." loft Edit, I think that bird was jet propelled or had a hell of a tail wind!
  21. When you have an 'I Hate My Job day' Try this out: Stop at your pharmacy and go to the thermometer section and purchase a rectal thermometer made by Johnson & Johnson.. Be very sure you get this brand. When you get home, lock your doors, draw the curtains and disconnect the phone so you will not be disturbed. Change into very comfortable clothing and sit in your favorite chair. Open the package and remove the thermometer. Now, carefully place it on a table or a surface so that it will not become chipped or broken. Now the fun part begins. Take out the literature from the box and read it carefully. You will notice that in small print there is a statement: "Every Rectal Thermometer made by Johnson & Johnson is personally tested and then sanitized." Now, close your eyes and repeat out loud five times,' I am so glad I do not work in the thermometer quality control department at Johnson & Johnson.' HAVE A NICE DAY; AND REMEMBER, THERE IS ALWAYS SOMEONE ELSE WITH A JOB THAT IS MORE OF A PAIN IN THE ASS THAN YOURS! ...Remember, if you haven't got a smile on your face and laughter in your heart... Then you are just an old sour fart; Maybe you should go and work for Johnson and Johnson
  22. Agree with Slowpoke. I wish him good health and a happy retirement....whatever retirement means to a guy that fishes for a living He should take up politics, he's outspoken enough to put all the pointed headed idiots who hold office in their place!
  23. Nice car Dan! Like that colour Mine is the gold colour and is also am SEL. I'll have to take a picture one of these days! However here's a link to a picture of an identical gold 500. My linkhttp://t1.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQ4dRg25fDM4sdnma3eiOQffrvk-vTorRKL96MS17h-NvFNLyLXVQ
  24. As some of you previously may have read here before I bought a new but used car, a 2005 Ford 500. Had it for 5 weeks now, 1 week past the 30 day warrranty coverage but still within the 90 day power train warranty. So this morning at 6 A:M get in the car, turn the key and it was a rather slow turn over. Thought, well that isn't too good, it's cold out but not arctic like. Then I notice most of the idiot lights are lit and not going off after the car started and the 'puter message centre is in darkness (stayed this way all the way to work.) Go to work shut it off, restart and same thing although it turned over quicker. Tried it again and click click clik! Damn! Call the dealer after they opened, spoke to service manager and he says to bring it in. Could only be the battery has a low charge and it's causing everything to go wonky. Even the cd player was trying to eject discs after the ignition was off. Talked to the sales man I bought it from and he says not to worry, we'll work out something. I get boosted and take it into the dealer. (I could tell you about all the other missfortunes of the morning but...) Anyway, they tested everything and found out that yes the battery was bad and the alternator was shot! In goes a new one of each and all done at no charge!! And a free carwash to boot! I couldn't believe it! So since I am still in amazement as I was hoping that they would cover at only a part of the bill I was not expecting this! So here goes, Discovery Ford on Brant St. in Burlington, owned by Allan Pearson, the helpful sales guy is Jeff Novasell in the used car dept. and John and Debbie in service. My hat is tipped to all of you in greatful appreciation and giving me a great ending to one of the worst days in a long long while, the car trouble is only a part of my day's problems! It isn't everyday this sort of exceptional thing happens to me so I am passing along this good news because they are doing such a great job of providing customer service and that is something worth mentioning. Not too many businesses will bight the bullet and not expect payment, I would have been pleased if I had to pay some, however I am ecstatic with this outcome.
  25. :rofl2:
