  1. I got 2-3" on the bulbs in the garden already out of the ground. Last night was sitting in the backyard with the dog and counting the dew worms on the lawn. I could have picked a couple dozen
  2. The only thing to do in St Jacobs on Sunday is shop at Home Hardware. You could tour the sugar bush on Saturday (not open on Sunday either) Natural Sports on Victoria St is only 15 minutes away and KW Surplus is kind of cool All depends on your wife's definition of romantic!
  3. Aw you guys are killing me! Other than 4 days moose hunting in Oct11, it's been 19 months since I've been on that lake fishing
  4. Eyes must be going. Thought it was 1850. Would have been a steal if a deal
  5. Fishhawk 1750 owner since 2003 here and absolutely no complaints and I kick the **** out of mine. I was trying to hold out for an 1850 but none were around and I had cash burning a whole in my pocket. My only input would be the 90HP might be a little light. My 115 pushes the 1750 at 42mph. With a 19 pitch prop I could use a bit more power tubing with the kids.
  6. Been standing in the driveway looking at my boat and thinking what day to start getting it ready,. Dropped an HB 1197 on it last fall and never got the chance to get it wet. Also looking at replacing my tired old Abu 7000's with something new and shiny Hopefully this warm weather has kept the feedback on trout and salmon and we'll continue to see the quality sized fish come the end of summer FWIW, was fishing last weekend and it sure looked like the odd alewife was in close on the breakwalls
  7. Forgot to add one thing. In this version the trays are too spread out. The bottom tray gets a fair bit more heat and smoke and about every hour I switch top and bottom racks. A better design for this system would be to move the racks closer together at the top. Gonna try and get it going this weekend if I can get out Saturday
  8. Half the fun in getting into smokers is checking out all the crazy contraptions other people come up with. I had a blast checking out the you tube videos and peoples web sites. You'll absorb a ton of information and stumble onto some good recipes. I put mine together on the cheap side. A $20 electric hotplate from CTC, A 12x12 ceramic tile goes underneath it. Three $5 grills from CTC and about $40 in cedar from home depot. Probably cost me more in beer sitting in the garage having a cold one while drawing up plans and putting it together. If you do build one try and make it as air tight as possible with a smaller air exchange hole and be extra cautious with any material that can give off fumes when heating. OBS plywood is not recommended!!! Mine works fine for what I do which is mainly trout. With the hot plate on medium I add a small extra cup to the chip tray with 2 lit charcoal bricks. Takes my smoker up to 170-190F mark. A $10 BBQ temp gauge sits on the door. In action Visit your local BBQ stores as their selection of chips and smoker accessories is growing. I have a BBQ Galore right behind me so easy to pick up my favourite Black Cherry wood chips
  9. Looks like the reel trade in is March 9th-14th and then the rod trade in is the 16th to 20th - 2 trips Yikes! The Ontario store site is starting to post the sale details by day and programs but as yet has not released the actual flyer as far as I can see. Check out the Auburn store and that should be close if you want a sneak peak at the flyer
  10. definitely look at the Eyecons. My bottom bouncer rod for the last several years has been a BPS Extreme Flipping stick 10-20lb MH action. Handles right up to 2 ounce easily. Based on other store flyers the BPS Spring sale looks like they might have the Extreme's on sale for $69. Look at the New York store flyer
  11. and it comes in a tiller!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! http://www.larsonboats.com/fx1750-tl.php
  12. Must have missed those Dan or I would have snapped them up. Left the show well stock with ones with a logo on the pack
  13. Did my annual wander around the Spring Fishing show and although the displays and deals seem to be few and far between I did come away this year with a few positives, Found a few deals this year. JB's Fishing Depot had most of their plastics on buy 3 or 4 and get 1 bag free. Now that's not a far out ridiculous deal but the selection of product was the best I'd ever run into. All the new baits, new colors and several of my secret favorites (look for cleaned out hooks at his booth - ha ha) In the rod clear out section at Natural Sports I found a couple of gems. A Shimano Alivio carp rod for $60 and Abu Vendetta rods for $50. Good selection of 1 piece spinning/bait casting. Picked up a 7'4" M spinning that'll be perfect for tubes and drop shot on erie. One big rant was the price for the pepperettes. I always buy a few to munch on while walking around the show. Size, selection and price was too high for me this year. On the plus, they did serve cold Mill Street at the bar Best at Show Award! For anyone considering a boat purchase this year, please do yourself a favor and search out the new Larson (yes I said LARSON) FX 1750. For a multi species boat I have not seen anything in all my years as impressively designed for deck, storage and fishable areas. The show special is almost too good to believe $22,995 comes with a 115HP merc Folding tongue matching trailer (and not a little undersized one) Minn Kota and Lowrance fish finder. By far the most impressive layout I've seen in a long time. 96" beam makes this boat a monster even for 17.5 foot. Just thought I'd pass this along and hopefully they'll be coming out with a 19-20 footer in this in a year or so.
  14. Used an Abu 5500 for years hauling big baits, bucktails, trolling lake O for spring kings. Sold mine when I bumped into a cardiff pretty cheap. Should have not sold the Abu!!! My Cardiff got a little rough as it aged and the casting was never as good as the Abu for the lighter baits
  15. I went out and bought the new Twilight DVD so my wife can watch it tonight and I can go tie bucktails in the garage
  16. check out MLS.ca and search by city name. There's 2 beauty's listed right in Port Rowan for 224,500 Good luck in your search and make you get something that will handle extra parking when your fellow OFC'rs come for a visit. How's that launch at Dock Street.
  17. fun to look through the ads here. Maybe you'll see something you like. My buddy bought a used boat from the states and said it was a piece of cake bringing it back. https://www.walleyecentral.com/classified/wecIndex.html Pretty sweet 2004 Lund 1900 Pro V on there right now
  18. Usually the reference is to keep your bait rigged horizontal by bending the hook. An old debate to some that say a whitefish won't hit if the hook set up is hanging vertical. Been there, tried this and can't say that I ever did catch any fish on it. For temagami put your faith in the tied and true tip up (balancing stick)rigged just off the bottom with live or salted minnows. If your fishing outside the bad boy (simcoe style) with a small tube on the end has caught me some nice whities up there.
  19. For reels jump right into the line counters. My experience with Okumas have been mixed and I've blown up 4 (2 Magda and 2 Catalina's) over the last few years. Running Daiwa and Okuma Convector now and knock on wood no problems Rods are very personal preference and can be had for cheap. I've got a few of those rods in my basement and that's where the stay. On the downriggers do yourself a favor and track down the Fenwick twist rods. A little hard to find but worth every penny. If you venture into the dipsey relm you'll probably want separate rods for these. I run 10' rapala rods and these were around $60 For downrigger weights I like 2 different styles I run 12lb pancakes where I won't be even close to the bottom (lake ontario, erie) and 8lb cannonballs where I want to drag bottom (off niagara, simcoe, temagami) I don't think color matters too much My honest opinion on the temp would be to save your money for now. make sure you have a good VHF. I run a Cannon Speed and temp and on many trips the last couple years I'm tied more to my graph and fishing bait and marks rather than setting up on a temp break. Good luck and welcome to the fraternity of poor fishermen
  20. Same here, played many games there for Mississauga and Cawthra Park and then coached Cooksville minor hockey teams for 5 years. Even played a few years there in a mens league. No other arena in GTA that has as much kharma for me. I got a chill when I saw "the walk" from the dressing room up the ramps to the bench area. Probably the worst skate sharpening in the whole country though!!
  21. Looks good! tied tons of these in my youth and sold them out of my car when I worked at a GTA tackle shop. What worked the best for me was to use needlepoint thread for the body. You can buy 100's of colors at Fabricworld and for cheap. I used to overwrap the body in single flashabou or wire like yours but the killer ones for me were when you tie in a tiny burst of red yarn or marabou at the tail. I used to think it looked like exposed gills and it definitely caught me more perch. To finish I then coated 2x with clear nail polish and sometimes I would dab glow in the dark fabric paint on the head. Key to the finish is to not overwrap the body too thick and start to taper down to the head at a little over halfway to the hook eye. Finish the body wrap with only 1 layer of yarn and leave about 1 mm open hook shank to tie off the yarn. Build the head up with thread not yarn. I'll see if I still have a few in my box (pretty sure) and post a few pictures of the gills tied in
  22. Oh yeah! Apache burgers. That and C&W on Dundas in Mississauga was my after hockey treat growing up. Love chinese in Temagami Star burger in Campbellford House of Wings in Oakville for after avday salmon fishing
  23. nice one, I went for drive this morning and all I found was mud. All the ice in Bronte harbor had washed out and the water was like chocolate milk.
  24. Used quite a few brands for ice fishing before settling on the Fireline (white). Performs well in very cold conditions and I've had no problems for lakers and whitefish. Still run light flouro for perch and rainbows though probably just cause its more shallow water fishing. I have some Berkley Nano rigged up to try this year but will have the fireline with me as back up.
  25. Most No Frills will sell a decent selection of whole frozen sardines, and such. we use them all the time for trout and pike
