  1. There are some very impressive "first" fish finders out there that aren't too much $. Features I would recommend trying to get based on your budget GPS Colour I don't think I'd ever buy a sonar without these now. I've also been quite impressed with the recent down imaging units (fish finder only) for clarity and detail. The Lowrance Elite 4 and 5's are pretty nice. There are some good deals at Radio World right now for Lowrance Mark 5 units, Brand new for under $200 as well as some Humminbird units I run Hummingbird now (deal I couldn't pass up) but have been a long time Lowrance user. Both units are reliable
  2. complications from neck surgery 66 years old - way to young It was his "fishing snake" lure that really turned me onto largemouth bass fishing. Up until them I was a trout and walleye guy pretty much I bought that pack of lures from Barkleys early 80's, fished them out in quinte with what I had which was only walleye spinning rods. On the trip out east next weekend walked out of Barkleys with a Shimano Bantam Mag 10 on a 6 ft pistol grip bait casting rod and a couple weeks later added a Bantam 200 baitcast combo
  3. That is grossly huge, almost looks like those doctored photos on the web of the gigantic dog but as Lorne says, I'll take a 30lb wild Canadian Carp for the fight. I'd still love to fish some of these European waters like Gigantica and Rainbow Been passing these days watching the Korda DVD's #3 through #6 (which is on You Tube in it's entirety) and really getting the itch to start this years carp session. All I know is my shopping list keeps getting longer watching those DVD's
  4. BPS current flyer, page one bottom right http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CFPageC?storeId=10151&langId=-1&catalogId=10051&appID=163&template=circular.cfm&i=144332&m=26141&storeID=11&tab=3
  5. BPS has some decent deals on now for your first bait caster. The Extreme reel is a good buy. Assuming from your post that it's your first baitcaster that it will be a general learning reel and used for all round casting which is just fine for this reel. I own 6 of the Extremes now and have found them to be durable, easy to cast and a great value when they go on sale. For spinnerbaits, topwater,.... these are fine reels Will they flip a 1/4 oz jig like a Curado or Chronarch - NO! but I have been using these as a flipping reel on a bit larger baits and they perfom wonderfully. I have more expensive baitcasters but they will come to you all in good time. You can buy 2 Extremes at that price for what a Curado will set you back. Pair it up with a Bionic Blade or Tourney Special at BPS and you're set for your first outfit.
  6. Spawning begins end of March, beginning of April Temagami time so it would be pretty close to where you are
  7. If any Nanook owners out there need a new travel cover look for the Rapala M2 cover. Fits like glove, has better re-enforced corners and compression straps to tighten the middle section down. Clam cover at Sail was 70 bucks, the Rapala M2 was 44
  8. Magnacharge in misissauga sells them to. I run a 12ah from them no problems
  9. check around at some dental offices. some places still might be using the old film xray system and will have the small lead/tin(?) sheets that come off the backs of the film. I stock piled for years as my wife works in a dental office. This lead is not as dense due to the tin so I can pour bigger heads like 1/2 oz and they weight 1/4 oz. Also this lead does not tarnish or dull after it's poured. I have jigs over a year old in my box and they still have a nickel shine appearance. when I need the weight I just melt regular lead
  10. A real easy way to get going is with the Hi Mountain Jerky Kit. I bought one last fall and have given it a real workout doing a total of about 25 lbs of jerky so far. I do a pound or two at a time and it does not last around my house for any more than a few days I'm looking at maybe going with the dehydrator but I tell you now, you can make some awesome jerky right in your oven with this system. Available at Bass Pro and Princess Auto and both carry all the spice cure kits http://ontariofishingcommunity.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=66365&hl=jerky
  11. I make my own using high quality small trebles or #4 Walleye hooks. Take a lengths of Braided line 8-10 lb test and double it over. Tie up your favorite braid not so that the doubled over line comes off the eye of the hook only about 4 ". Use the doubled over line to make a loop not over the tube hook below the barb. Works like a charm and very easy to put on/take off. I have been playing around with tying a longer lead (10") and using a very small size 8 offset worm hook (Got a pack of VMC at Lebarons one day). I put a 2"-3" Gulp minnow on behind more like a "dangler" hook and have had some success
  12. I'm going to just 1 and it'll be the Toronto one. I see less and less at the International each year and looking for a new venue to hopefully see something different
  13. Winter target would be a whitefish that gets it's shoulders caught in a 6" hole For spring, I'm looking for a 30lb carp (several high 20's over the last few years) and I'll also be trying to add a few on the centre pin. Be nice to do both together. and about the only thing I really have a jones on for is a big rainbow out on the lake, something that'll nudge that 20lb mark (2 years ago I had a piggy on in out in the blue zone that was so fat it couldn't jump out of the water. All it did was get halfway and then fall back - still haunted by those images as it threw the hook close to the boat)
  14. West end lake O tribs turned from green to brown this afternoon. Checked credit 16 and bronte while out shopping today
  15. What you need is a trent Severn waterway map #2028 Harder and harder to find these as everyone is going digital
  16. Without scrolling down I went left to right with leafs jersey numbers and missed only number 20. Guessing I was a few years off with Gary Monahan. How could I forget the Milkman. Thanks for that link. Kind of nice to remember back when I was a hockey crazed kid
  17. Bass pro shops has a propane smoker on sale for $119 in the current flyer. Looks like a good starter unit.
  18. Planning my Grey cup party now. Arrrrrrrrggggggggoooooooo's
  19. I have a nanook and it is a bit of a pull with snow. What I might look at is leaving those big comfy seats at home when you are car toting it and buy a couple of fold down stools from canadian tire.
  20. just saw some at my local Canadian Tire, natural and the fl. orange
  21. Was wandering through Princess Auto yesterday and stumbled upon a do it yourself jerky kit for $30. Had 2 bags of cure/spice mixes, a large jerky rack and the jerky gun with 2 nozzles. I just got back my share of this years moose and there was a high amount of ground done this year so I thought what the heck lets give this a try as I've always wanted to do this but never got around to it. Took out a pound of moose ground last night and got to it this afternoon. Very easy directions to add spice and cure (tablespoons per pound) and loaded the gun up. In just under an hour and a half this came out of the over (200C). That was about 4pm and as I compare to what's left in the bag beside me somehow a lot of it is already gone? The kit and spices are from Hi Mountain and I'm already planning my next batch tomorrow night. Need to find the small casings to make pepperettes. Used the Pepper kit first and have a Mesquite kit for tomorrows try. In the recipe it says to add ice cold water to the ground when mixing but I substituted Hot Thai sauce so these ones do have a good kick Also ran across a recipe this afternoon on the web that was using ground salmon to do this. Might have to try that too.
  22. Did she teach english in Mississauga in 1978?
  23. I was looking at eastern lake erie yesterday and texted my buddy. I've never seen pink on there before. My buddy who lives down that way said there were reports of mid lake swells in the 7 meter range
  24. Northern Manitoba is a cost affordable alternative to the epic lodges. I like to look through the Master Anglers lists from Travel Manitoba site and it's a great place to see what lakes come up regularly in trophy fish categories The ones that always seem to cough up big fish are God's Lake, Nueltin, Reindeer, Big Sand I was at Big Sand in 2008 and from what I saw it's really pricey (was a free trip my friend won)but I've seen a few on God's Lake for under $4 grand for the week. I know that does not include the flight though to Winnipeg
  25. My current ice fishing clothing came from Marks Works Warehouse in North Bay about 3 years ago (bottom of the hill by Canadian Tire) Heavy Parka, matching bib pants, Three fingered lined hydro mitts and -150 pack boots. Never ever been cold wearing this stuff. All very reasonably priced and if I remember the parka was on sale. They used to carry a lot of cold weather clothing I've never seen down here in the city but not sure now with the recent store changes.
