  1. forgot to add, for wool socks check out Canadian Tire in or around the sports section. They sell 2 pairs of mid weight merino wool socks for around $12. These things are great, they never get pulled down around your ankles walking too!
  2. It's all about the layers and funny thing I'm 49 and have only once every really got wet ice fishing that I wished I had fully waterproof clothing. When I think about it pretty much all my stuff has come out of Marks and has been purchased mostly in the North Bay store over the years Base layer is Marks Driwear - great product and much less than big sports brands Next layer depends on weather - either light lounge pants and long sleeve or fleece top and bottoms (Nothing fancy) I will wear a second fleece/waterproof hoody that I can walk out with and keep the sweat down if it's not too cold out Pants - Marks thermal bibs that have zippered front and sides. All about not sweating on the way out Coat - Full 3/4 Marks Down Parka (snow mobile model). It's a little lighter than a traditional parka and has easy access zippers up the side to vent (or sit on a snow mobile) Boots are single most important items in my opinion. Tried many >> Only wear Baffin Titans now with a good add on cleat system from Canadian Tire
  3. This will be one those items debated for a long time I've used them all right back to my first experience lake trout fishing in temagami with the lowrance little green box they both have benefits but the old stereo types about flashers are the only "real time" fish finder is a load of bull now. For me it's a fish finder all the way. I use a HB 798 color and with the higher powered colored units you can switch between sonar screen and an exact flasher output screen but still have GPS, multi zoom. And yes have used my HB and then switched over to a HB 45 a few yards away. Pretty much the same response. Not to mention loading high res navionic maps and using them to get onto new spots Heck I can even record my sonar screen for fancy OFC reports but as yet I haven't figured that out.
  4. Ron Post Knives, South River Ontario I have 3 hand made knives from him (and looking for a few more). Finally bought a fillet knife last year and as you already posted I have used the old rapala's for years (Have 6 of them) This was strictly a TO ME - FROM ME gift. He does have a web site and sells his stuff at several shows through the year. He's always at the Toronto Fishing shows and does some of the hunting/trapping shows up north too. Best if you can see all the handles he can do. I pick my knife blade and then tell him what color/design handle I wanted. The top is a different type of skinning knife he's now making - was made this summer and shipped direct to my door for me. Gonna give it a test drive hopefully next week moose hunting best to give him a call to find out if he might be doing anything local to you
  5. Two I have checked out from Diners, Drive Ins and Dives - Buffalo edition Mulberry's cafe - Spectacular Italian and close to the stadium. Do not buy the regular Lasagna unless you are sharing for 2. Grovers - probably a bit far from stadium and line up was way too long for a burger - OK but the hype was bigger than the food
  6. BB android platform is very different to others in selection of apps and costs. I run a BB tablet and synced it to my old phone to expand my device capabilities when on business but their app selection sucks and is maybe 10% of what iPhone offers I always carried my ipod for music in the car, hotel room, vacations, hunt camp,..... Now I have one single device and about to swap out my tablet for an iPad and sync everything on the cloud. I do admit that old BB text keyboard was best but I can live without that for the Internet connections and faster performance
  7. I'm a newly converted iphone user. Had 2 BB's before including the Storm which didn't really impress me for my needs (business, texting, email mostly) Hate to say it but based on just the phone and not the plan (important difference) I can't really think why I'd go with a BB phone. Samsung phones are getting top ratings on android platform and pretty hard to not like all the stuff I can do on an iphone. If you can save money on a plan keep your eyes open to look at all the phone hardware choices. I got my iphone 4S at $0 when my plan was renewed with Bell for 2 years
  8. As a learning tool I'd suggest staying with a bolt action. Allows a bit more control between shots. Another aspect for safety and teaching kids to shoot is having a magazine. Very easy way to teach safety with a loaded gun - bolt action vs tube feed when you can open the bolt and remove the magazine to check if gun is still loaded Lots of options out there and some very interesting choices can be seen on sites like Epps in Orillia. They have a Tyrol 22 right now at a very good price. This is a very well put together rimfire rifle but may be a little unknown if you need it worked on.
  9. butcher ads are starting to pop up for this years hunting season on Kijiji too
  10. drove up Bronte at 9:30 pm the other night and the Halton Police was turning into the park entrance. Almost wanted to follow along and watch the gong show. Tried casting the pier the other night too and the overflow from the river must have showed up there. Lined up elbow to elbow on the break wall after that rain. I turned around and went home when I saw the crowd.
  11. Hooked on these since a trip to Cozumel and make mine with walleye. Simple - butter in pan and sear gently small portions of fillet in a hot skillet no breading or coating for me I like it with onions, cilantro and a bit of salsa, for a kick I add sweet thai chili sauce or ranch dressing
  12. go to google images and type in play room floor mats canadian tire sells these for pretty cheap and they go on sale regularly. Can't tell you the number of applications I've found for these around the garage, outdoors. Great thing is they can be trimmed easy to size and they link together
  13. That's why I love Crystal Beach $5
  14. Bronte launch is in the same spot as always. West side of rivermouth. I think it's $15 or $17. I don't look I just plug in the credit card and print a ticket.
  15. Asolutely it works. I've been chucking plastics off the piers for a few years now. Swim baits have been better for me though. If you notice in their video they are fishing the harbor opening from main lake to a fairly large inlet area. Many USA ports on Michigan. Erie and lake Ontario have much more elaborate breakwall and harbor areas so intercepting moving fish is easier. They look to be anchored in the middle of the harbor which is pretty nuts though. Trust me instead of chucking a Lil cleo all day with the horde tie on a weighted swim bait or work a Berkley gulp weighted off the breakwall. I had some nice bows this spring off Bronte in April this way. Yet to get out this fall but my shad swim baits are ready to go.
  16. As stated, trolling speed is key, even with the stickbaits and spoons I find no more that 1.8-1.9 for hard baits and 1.0 for worm harnesses. Larger blades in purples, greens are first to go down on my boat. Most productive rods are dipseys on #2-3 setting and snap weights off the boards. If I do run a line directly behind the boat it's always leadcore. I never run riggers out their as they just have never really produced for the walleye on the western end. I will run the more east when there are more bows around
  17. If you're not in a rush, Blacks puts some pretty aggressive promo pricing on for prints larger than 4x6. I work in this industry from the supplier side so all these places are pretty much my customers with the supplies they buy for printing Here's another little publicized product for 8x10's. Blacks will do a Quick Print Book for you that has 20 8x10's (big prints) mounted in a photobook cover for $27.00. That's way less than everyday single 8x10 pricing You can even pick from a couple different covers. and it can be done in store or only line for pick up in 1 hour Not sure if you need single 8x10's for another reason but photobooks are a great deal for putting tons of prints into an easy to share format. You can add text to pages too to tell the story - date, time, place,....
  18. Great breakfast at Burgerworld (Fisher and 11) for dinner pub grub = Moose's Loose Change nice sit down = Farina's Italian I think it's inside best Western on Lakeshore best truckers breakfast for miles is The Husky on 11 just at the top of the hill outside North Bay (~1 mile) on your way to temagami Enjoy your trip
  19. Canadian Truck and Trailer lists a 5x7 atv trailer on kijiji for 749
  20. I've left several in the bush clearing trails up in Temagami so unless you are very mindful I now just go with the cheap ones from SAIL/CTC and Carry a wet stone with me. I can tell you where 1 is on a trail off Diamond Lake if you ever get up there. Those World Famous ones work just as good. My Gerber was way too delicate and got beat up quick with several blade knicks and chips
  21. There are 2 areas at the end of the access road. The first one being the Manitou Landing. This is for the public and has ample parking, loading/unloading areas and 2 boat ramps. You'll be fine at this spot. From this landing (called the Hub) you can head out in a number of directions but be mindful, this lake can eat props. The best investment you can make is a Lake Temagami shoal map. Google it and you can buy on line or at the TLA booth when you get there. I would also recommend a GPS if this is your first time on the lake. It's massive and has tons of islands, inlets and arms that can all start looking the same especially as it gets dark. Campsites abound up there but the best ones do get busy. Lots up Kokoko bay, Cross lake and Obabika area and these areas also have pretty decent smallmouth and pike fishing. Find the shoals, beaver lodges and wood debris shorelines and you'll have fun. Troll anything deeper than 60ft for lakers watch the graph to get an idea about bait and fish , Downriggers are a bonus to have up there but I still jig for them a lot when conditions are right (no wind) - small silver spoons behind a 3ft small gang troll works great. As for walleye you may have to bribe someone for info. I've fished that lake for 20+ years and still they give me fits trying to find them - here today gone for weeks after that never to retrun in that spot for years!!!!. Much easier to contact any of the lodges up there and arrange a back lake portage trip. Some of the smaller lakes off temegami have really good walleye fishing - worm harnesses will do the trick Enjoy your trip.
  22. When I was younger I used to catch crayfish for the guests at my in laws lodge up on temagami. I had 2 mid size aquarium nets for scooping goldfish and would snorkel along the rock shorelines in 1-2 ft of water. Flip over the rocks and then scoop up the craws. Got to know where the good shorelines were and was pretty easy to go out and get 30-40 in an hour or so. Wouldn't charge the guests for them but I got some smoking big tips after they came back from fishing. Did the same deal growing up fishing the credit river all summer for smallies. Grab a couple of those cheap goldfish nets and if you have kids let them catch you a bunch
  23. I run mine at that level and even a bit higher only to try and make them stand out a bit more from the other set ups (lead core, riggers) Kind of mid way between a rigger and a board. Shakers on the dipsey rod with +200 feet of line out can be hard to detect and i run 50-50 spoon to fly set ups on these rods. The higher rod gives a bit more sensitivity to something dragging - it's also one heck of a wake up call when a big one slams it
  24. at the dash and the 597 up front. That Side Imaging is so cool it's a distraction to actually fishing
