Dropshoting, marketing or real science behind it?
Old Ironmaker posted a topic in General Discussion
I am often called old fashioned, a human paradigm, even a dinosaur going down the river the wrong way whatever that meant, and that was 30 years ago. Please educate me, I hope old dogs can learn new good tricks. I'll try anything to put a fish on my line. I even bought a Colour Selector once. Dropshoting, Aren't we talking about still fishing with vertical presentation. I always wanted to know the science behind this dropshot system. With that hook tight to the main drop line a fish needs to take the bait strait on I think. Point of hook first. If the fish strikes from the rear or side it would most likely feel the drop line and let go as that main line would not be free as it would if it was on a light tag. When we set up this type of drop shot the tag line was always made of the lightest diameter mono you could get away with and light split shot, just enough to hold the line vertical, keep the bait moving naturally if alive, up, down, left right. Dropshoting looks to be too static and goes against much I have learned. If you watched panfish and some game fish feed through crystal clear water IE ice fishing shallow Erie or snorkeling, you would see the fish inhale the bait by vacuuming in the bait, if something was amiss they would spit it out. Then often will suck it back in again. If they felt something was up they spit it and ran. Walleye are a inhale, spit and restrike if you have ever watched them diving. For another thread, don't want to digress here. They are selling dropshot hooks, dropshot weights, do they have custom dropshot rods? Are we getting sucked in by marketing gurus in New York looking for our hard earned money? Or is there a science to this phenomenon that I'm not getting? I was one of those guys that ran to LaBaron or the Sportman show in the 80's everytime Al Linder mentioned a new product and tried to buy it. I haven't tried the setup, should I? -
Good for you man, I'm jealous, 4 stroke eh? I better get myself a paper route or something before I retool my rig. As soon as my piggy bank says OK it's toy time this shack of mine says oh no you don.t. Today is was a new pressure washer (which is almost fun) and another wedding invitation, goodbye new GPS! My neighbours and friends told me my old washer was acting up.

Good report and good for you for breaking tradition and boating some beauty eaters. Jigging spoons for Walleye, yes thanks for the reminder, it works. We also jig spoons deep in the fall on Big E for big Moma smallies. A few years back went up to Clear lake with a group of guys and my goomba from the main office from work. I had never fished with but had tried to for many years, these are all great guys just not fishermen. Troll, troll, troll, and troll somemore. Perch colour Shadrap, 8 hours and 1 fish latter the answer to putting fish in the boat is troll some more with the same Perch Shadraps only this time take off the swivel, only a bit faster or, oops too fast slow down, but keep trolling guys, we'll get em. I urged them for 5 hrs that night to switch up, deaf ears. After I had about enough the next morning I suggested to my fishing partner, his boat his truch, lets jig for these fish that are all over the screen on this deep water point. What's a jig? 2 drifts and 3 fish later guess what? Back to trolling. When we get back to the " cottage " with the 2500 ftsq boathouse, man what a shack, wink, wink, I say Show them your fish Joe, to everyones amazement Joe landed his first fish in 5 years of trolling. Sometimes we need to change to get results. Thanks for reminding me about jigging spoons for those picky pics.

I would choose Nippissing. Close to TO and the outfitters there could use our support. If money really isn't any object check out Klotz Lake Camp. It's near Longlac. Fly to Thunder Bay, rent a vehicle and get ready for an adventure of a lifetime. One can drive into many back lakes on the old Kimberly Clark logging roads. Portage the rapids to Flint Lake with a 14 foot aluminum. 2 at a time walleye on a pickerel rig, fill the boat with perch, put on a good old fashioned Red Devil and hold on for dear life when a 20 plus pound Northern hits it. While you ice down your sore wrist and elbows from reeling in trophy pike, watch the Black Bears and Moose do what Black Bears and Moose do. And you can do all this in sunlight until 10:30 PM. Snowball fight in the morning and shorts and t shirts at noon. Pretty amazing for a 30 year old Ironmaker that had never been in the woods north of Dundas. Now I hear they have a TV! I can't imagine why for the life of me. I miss the real north, forget about Sask and Manitoba. That's all trick photography and besides this the Ontario Fishing Network. Who want's to go to Klotz next June?

Wheres the auto save? I just lost my reply. Richyb, PM me with these numbers. Age of furnace, make, model number. Type of hot water heater, age, fuel used, does it share the same stack as the furnace? Cost of replacing chimney. Price of stainless steel liner installed and if chimney is salvageable if possible. A picture would help. Cost of fuel where you are, oil, natural gas, propane. I should be able to give you the return on investment to help you decide whether to replace the furnace. I see you are from Orillia, if you have any friends or relatives that played in the Northern Football Conference for Orillia in 1978 and hit me out of bounds and tore my ACL, don't bother!!!!!!!!!! Just kidding.

How can one possibly catch a fish without wetting the net.

Where ever you choose be sure to ask if the lake is landlocked. Was up in the Longlac area years ago and came across a group that had flown in. They couldn't figure out how we got there as they didn't hear a plane. We drove in one of the Kimberly Clark logging roads. They weren't too happy to find out they weren't the only one fishing the lake and the lake wasn't as remote as advertised. We dropped, them off a 24 the next day

OK Woody your right again and I'm wrong and I'm getting as confused as Hyper. Get a license and keep it with you, then no problems with the MNR, the OPP the RCMP then no need for a lawyer to stand before a judge in court. Get a license tattooed to your arm.

Yes private ponds for commercial use. IE kiddy fish ponds. I have a pal in Hidden Valley with a few private ponds stocked with various trout. He says licenses required, maybe he doesn't want his pond fished by his buddies. Good question, we will find out for sure latter. And I don't think just writing Wrong is the best way to get your point across in a civil discussion. Woodsman must be a good researcher and fast typer. Answers the question before I can post it.

It is not a deep cycle it is a cranking battery according to the specs for that battery. I don't know why it says deep cycle on the label. It's not even a combo. If it's for your Minncotta take it back and get a deep cycle. That battery is not the one you want. A cranking battery is rated for a maximum number of charges from a discharge to 20%. If it is less then $120.00 you might not have a good battery in less than a year. Some batteries will enable you to go from 80% to 20% and recharge it hundreds of times. The $99.99 batteries will get you far less re charges from 20%, even less when fully drained. Don't charge it, return it and get a deep cycle that allows the maximum charges you can budget for..

Yes Woodsman, there are exemptions as in a special group or Family fishing week were no one needs a license, but rare I agree, yes.
-
Private land or not one must possess a license to angle for sports fish in Ontario unless exempt due to age or disability. Unless the person says they were given to him by an angler, which is not the question, he is probably found guilty, probably because the judge might be in a good mood and I have seen some judges reaming the Crown for wasting valuable court time over a few fish. There is no such thing as Ministry wins by default. If he wants to plead his case that's what court is for.

Must be very sharp choppers Moose. I use my wifes best nailclippers. Then when they wear down I tell her I found her nail clippers. I have a black multi tool that has sharp clippers on them and a hook for carbuncklements from baitcasters. I think someone left them in my boat, they are the best I have found for all lines and they were free other than the $150.00 of fuel and everything else that goes with owning a boat..

That must one big missing piece for $699.00. I wouldn't want to be the guy that sold it to you. The manager must be really happy with them.

Stepping up on my soapbox for a second
Old Ironmaker replied to Acountdeleted's topic in General Discussion
I just returned from an upstate NY lake. Met the boys from across a few states. Prime target? Spawning Largemouth. It's legal, it's all mind set. I don't know how long it has been legal in NY state but can tell you sight fishing for spawn beds isn't easy, and that lake which is only about 400 acres is heavy with bass. I don't know how I feel about it. I cross the border and an hour latter if I climb down to my beach, pinch down a Barb and toss a topwater I'm now a criminal. I've been looking to hook a Gar for years, can't this year, the gar are spawning 2 feet from the bass beds. When they are done they will be too close to the beds as I know I will hook an OOS smallie. I have been watching Smallmouth spawn here from the deck for 18 years, the guarding males are more concerned about other males taking their beds than other species eating coffee grind size fry. -
As I said before there is a lot to this story. If this was a murder for thrill it is usually by 1 perpetrator, there are at least 2 others involved, unusual. They tried to go on a test drive earlier in Etobicoke and balked. That man is very lucky, and his connection is key. Connection as in what was the common denominator with Bosma, Why keep the truck at his mothers in a trailer, no one steals a vehicle and parks it at their residence, it is usually chopped in a few hours or burnt and what would a used vehicle bring? Where had his truck been prior? Was there something special about it the victim didn't know about? So many questions no answers this soon. Let's hope they get these others and soon.

The only game I watched the entire season. Man I feel for you folks, now you know how it feels to be a Bills fan, sort of. There something there for next season to build on, scrappy kids who are quick and like to bang, great combo. Got to give it to Boston, no quit in those kids. The best 3 minute team won.

Lake Ontario Salmon Fishing with Fishmaster
Old Ironmaker replied to Fishmaster's topic in General Discussion
Nice ride Steve. What do you call the new barge? Fish magnet PI? -
I just realized this afternoon it's easy for me to suggest you change the switch, not so easy if you have never changed one. I found this on youtube.com how to change a square D pressure switch for a water pump. There are many other diy tips there as well for changing pressure switches. Good luck, now go change the switch.
-
How about an O ring after rebuilding a V8?
-
Drop the 30 bucks and change the pressure switch.
-
We must be talking about 2 different types of pumps. No way a shallow well jet pump is going to get water out of a 185' deep well. I had a pressure demand pump, no pressure tank, ran continuously at 40 psi as long as a line was open, took it back as the pump running the entire time a shower was run or washing machine filled drove me nuts.

Bruce Power LHFC Partnership Video of the evening
Old Ironmaker replied to spinnerbaitking's topic in General Discussion
Spinner, I know it's better than receiving zero. But the money you are talking is far less than they would spend on 1 corporate junket on a private jet to Bermuda for 1 weekend, far less. Don't be naïve.
