Quick boat selling advice needed
Old Ironmaker replied to sneak_e_pete's topic in General Discussion
You need to provide at least Pleasure Craft License provided by Transport Canada. Info at 1-800-926-9105. As well as trailer ownership from MOT, Ontario. That's all I received when registering my used boat at the local Federal Gov office, the trailer at the Ministry of Transportation office. -
New Deep Cycles. Dekas or Kirkland?
Old Ironmaker replied to captpierre's topic in General Discussion
Any reason why Roy?. I have had a Nautilus smart charger for 4 years and use it all winter, never had a problem. Maybe I'm lucky. Never had a CTC battery. I was told Nautilus are Johnson Control. Deka is my choice of battery, 8 years on my cranking battery before I replaced this year with another Deka. -
Lick, Good haul, great for stress as well. Hope you ratify an agreement soon, a strike/lockout serves no one when all is said and done. Ifish, You need to move until you find them. They will come in spurts as the schools move by. A good sonar is important, find the balls of baitfish and you will find the perch. Sitting on one spot or fishing the same depths won't work. Move, move, move. Easy to say unless you are the anchor man. A trick I was taught by a local is to let out all the anchor rope if not many other vessels around, pull the rope tight and drift back, can cover more water without using the trolling motor or pulling anchor. Hit the ramp at 07:00, off the water at 11:00. Kept all over 9". Ended up with 6 pounds cleaned. 5 smallies on the drop shot as well, all around 2.5 lbs.

2003 Legend 17 XCalibur with 115 Merc 4-stroke

The best thing about getting bigger is they should be putting some gas in the rig soon. As soon as they can kick in a few bucks it's coincidental they don't want to go out wakeboarding with the old guy anymore. -
Hammering them all along the north shore right now. We also limited out by 11:00 AM. Hitting at 45 feet just below the thermocline in 80 feet. Copper dipsys set at 3 on wire. Spoons and meat on a harness. Didn't decide to go out until midnight. On the water at 6:00 AM. Good decision to go.

New Deep Cycles. Dekas or Kirkland?

When buying any battery check to see how many charges it will take from 80% full to 20% drained. There lies the difference between a $80.00 battery and a $150.00 battery. The number should be on the battery website. -
Go to UTube there are many many methods to tie. If there is a knot of any kind Utube has many clips showing how to.

A fish on the first cast of the morning........ugh...
Old Ironmaker replied to ckrb2007's topic in General Discussion
Have had to remove a treble from my hand a few times. Use the heavy test line method to pull down past the barn and it pops out. Saw a guy lose a eye from a treble hook. That was gruesome. Always wear glasses, always. An uncle in NY goes to the vet when he can't get a hook out, more than once.... much cheaper then the ER. Funny how a small puncture can hurt that badly. -
I find the launch at North Shore Marina to be fine, what launch are you speaking of ?

Go to Stomps Long Point fishing forum, channel 6-8 for daily perch reports for that neck of the woods.

OK now that's funny. Call them anyway, I think you misunderstood me, they may steer you towards someone that will do the repair locally.

Interesting Challenge (Handicapped fishing)
Old Ironmaker replied to HTHM's topic in General Discussion
Albert, Might not be a great idea to have him fish out of the Ranger. Especially knowing your luck with people going overboard. If you are going for perch I think I know where you are heading, I wouldn't risk that water with your boat with someone with a disability. Getting onto a pontoon boat is something I would recommend as well. I wouldn't try getting someone that is disabled onto my boat. We tried once and simply could not get him safely into the deep V from the dock. If someone without full physical abilities goes overboard you will not be able to get them back in without a strong second person. As well any injuries that may result in re boarding may not be evident dependent on the disability. I have a buddy who is in a chair that had a fractured leg for 2 days before he realized it. If you are determined to head out on Erie (if indeed that's where you are going), call me before you head out to get a real time marine report. Call the night before to warn me what time in the morning. Please don't try this on your boat. Why not take the person out on the fishing excursion boat out of PT. Dover? They have 1/2 day rates I believe. They still fish and drift for perch and bass. They were there last year. Edit. After thinking about this why not just head to the Pt. Dover dock? They are hitting them early morning and early evening. Bring emerald shinners with you. The bait shop in Dover is running out daily. They are hard to come by here now, hit and miss. -
You need to contact Hummingbird to review the warranty with them before you do anything. Edit, sorry used. Call Hummingbird anyway, they may provide you a service dealer near you. Garmin bent over backwards for me to get my used unit repaired. Let's hope Hummingbird is as good for customer service. I just installed my new Hummingbird today. If someone's thinking why I didn't go with Garmin, it was simply the deal I got.

I'll give him 1 single experience fighting 1 meter or more chop for 20 minutes and he will soon realize how stupid this thing he thinks he can do is. If he thinks this is an option tells me he is an inexperienced boater and shouldn't have a boaters card. Actually that should be a question on the boat test. Answer "yes" and you are never be allowed to pilot one of those floating noodles. If he is going to try this with his family he should be reported to the Childress Aid Society. The thought is just plain idiotic. Not worth even typing one more word.

The perch are here on the north shore this year in both big numbers and size. Pick a spot 9 to 25 feet of water. Have been hitting hard south of PT. Maitland all along west to Dover. Haven't been to Burwell since last month, they were deeper there then, 40 to 55 feet. Make sure anywhere you head to call ahead as emerald shinner minnows here are harder to get and the marinas may not have any once you get there. 2" Gulp emerald shinners will work but nothing out fishes a live bait here for perch. Heard of a 15.5" 1.7 pound jumbo caught yesterday at Peacock Point. Dirty muddy water hasn't been a problem here, even with the rain we have seen.

In keeping with the Disaster Theme these days.
Old Ironmaker replied to mercman's topic in General Discussion
A very tragic situation. Our prayers go out to those effected by this. Based on what I heard today on the radio programs there will be charges laid for those responsible. Having many years experience in rail transport ( Stelco during the 80's had the third largest railway in Canada) this should never have happened and was easily preventable. A locomotive with a drag of hazardous materials should not have the ability to move. If it does by some unknown reason steps have to be taken to ensure the health safety of the employees as well a surrounding community, including the environment. I wonder what the pipeline protesters have to say about the safety of transportation of oil by rubber tire and rail now? Just tragic, we need to say a few prayers for those poor souls. -

Andy, I'm glad you were able to contact the folks at the Binbrook conservation area. The thanks goes to you.
-
Yes, if you are in the Hamilton area the CYO will greatly appreciate any donations at Lake Niapenco ( Niagara Peninsula Conservation Authority )in Binbrook. The kids will greatly appreciate any sports related items. They are on the phone book under conservation authorities. I will check for the number and the name of the nice lady managing the reservoir in the morning. They will take anything from baseballs to bass plugs. Johnny D. A wonderful gesture by the way Andy. As well for any of the folks out there that want to contribute to this solid organization where we know the donation of hardware goes right to the kids that need to get out of the inner city for a few hours they really need fishing line.

I agree the Grand is a large body of water. The lower Grand, down river of Dunnville has been a washout this year for fishing, with all the rain it is like chocolate milk. I haven't heard of any fish of note being caught yet. I wouldn't bother down here.

Subaru ready to retire, looking at a new car. HELP!
Old Ironmaker replied to Big Cliff's topic in General Discussion
Big Cliff, You have made a good choice. My father bought a Camry new in 2009. 1 year or so and 7000 K after purchase his Dr. took his license from him for medical reasons. The dealership took back the car and gave him 90% of the total purchase price. That really impressed us as I really thought he was going to take a huge hit. The salesman showed me a list of customers looking for a near new Toyota, the car was sold before the paper work was done that tells a lot about a Toyota. I suggested he show that list to potential customers buying new. He has been and sent me Jays tickets as a thank you. Congrats and good driving. -
A beauty of a grill, and that child is getting big! I don't know about the problem you are having, I think after some use it will tighten up with carbon and grease on it. Do not use a steel brush on your grill, it will take the enamel off and ruin the grates. Get a good quality nylon brush, clean the grill cold and burn off fat by heating up on all full out high for 10 minutes before or after using. Take a picture of the nice clean grates now, that's the last time they will be so clean, that left over crud provides flavor. No more elcheapo steel brushes, right!

You need to lighten up a bit Rich. You read between the lines that aren't there. Relax. If I got hostile I would get the boot here.

I didn't comment on the survivability of late spawn bass, my comment was first aimed at answering the question then giving an opinion on the threat of spawning bed invasion of other fish species. So exactly what is meaningless in your opinion.? As far as I have been told you aren't a biologist either. I was giving observation from first hand experience, not scientific theory or hypothesis. Do you have the data whereby I can study it and draw my own conclusions as to the veracity of it's record and determine where hypothesis and theory overlap? If so I would be interested in looking at it.

Not all female bass of all strains spawn. Depends on age, disease and numbers of males available to them for a date. I am quoting from what I have been told over the years. You won't ever see a female on a bed once they have spawned. Males make the nest, milt the eggs and then once the coffee ground size fry has hatched the males guard the nest of fry..
