BucktownAngler Posted October 6, 2011 Report Posted October 6, 2011 (edited) I came across these 2 tip ups that use a rod and reel instead of the traditional way. does anybody use anything like this? how do you like it? has anybody seen these for sale locally? mike rousseau Posted October 6, 2011 Report Posted October 6, 2011 I do believe these are illegal in Ontario.. Can't use anything that sets the hook automatically...
Spiel Posted October 6, 2011 Report Posted October 6, 2011 This has been discussed before and if I remember correctly they are legal in Ontario, no different than a rod set in a downrigger. But to answer the question, I've never tried one.

I'm aware of the regs Mike but this is not a "spring gaff," this set up is merely a rod bent over in a release, like a down rigger or side planer, no springs involved just a bent rod in a release mechanism.
BucktownAngler Posted October 6, 2011 Author Report Posted October 6, 2011 i've already looked into the legality of this. it is definetly legal...confirmed by MNR
adempsey Posted October 6, 2011 Report Posted October 6, 2011 Never used one, but they've been around a while. The Simcoe board seemed spammed with respect to the Slammer by a couple of users last season, so I'd imagine you can find them in the tackle shops in that area.

Are you referring to the old "Quickdraw". There was quite the heated discussion on the Simcoe board about this last year. I wouldn't use it myself, but thats just my opinion. mike rousseau Posted October 6, 2011 Report Posted October 6, 2011 Check out automaticfisherman on YouTube... They look pretty sweet... They set the hook for you before the fish can drop the bait... Wich is aparentky legal... I'll be buying 1 or 2 this winter now that I know they're legal...
GoneFishin Posted October 6, 2011 Report Posted October 6, 2011 My grandfather made one about 30 years ago that he gave to me. I could see it being good for the right size fish (jumbo perch) But most other fish will shake the hook before you get to it, if they do get hooked at all.

GBW Posted October 6, 2011 Report Posted October 6, 2011 looks like I will be tinkering around this year to make one for crappie and perch fishing. I guess I better try and figure out a way for it not to set the hook to hard on those paper mouth's...
Nipfisher Posted October 7, 2011 Report Posted October 7, 2011 Lots of guys use them on Nipissing. I stick with the door-stopper spring tip up that way I dont have to get out of my warm hut if I know it is just a dink perch playing with my minnow. Once those automatic doo-dads are set off you have to go reset them.
Bondar Posted October 7, 2011 Report Posted October 7, 2011 Oh cool another product to make ice fishing even more boring not you don't even need to hold a rod or set the hook LOL
12footspringbok Posted October 7, 2011 Report Posted October 7, 2011 Oh cool another product to make ice fishing even more boring not you don't even need to hold a rod or set the hook LOL Boring? Whats more exilerating than running and gunning all over the lake when its -20? LOL
Remastered Posted October 7, 2011 Report Posted October 7, 2011 Speaking of tip-ups, are wind tip ups legal here?
