ERB Posted February 18, 2009 Report Posted February 18, 2009 Looking for some places to go Crappie fishing in the spring after the ice goes out. Would like something some what close to Toronto like 1- 1:30 hours away, that I would not need a boat to fish? Thanks
Joeytier Posted February 18, 2009 Report Posted February 18, 2009 Anywhere on the trent river in the Kawarthas.
jediangler Posted February 18, 2009 Report Posted February 18, 2009 Island lake conservation area in Orangeville. I don't know what your chances would be from shore but they do rent aluminum boats with electric motors as well as row boats, canoes and kayaks. Good population of crappies in there.
foolinfish Posted February 18, 2009 Report Posted February 18, 2009 (edited) The GULL RIVER where it enters SHADOW LAKE in NORLAND .You can fish from either side and the top of the lake itself where it is near the hiway (45). Around the corner is HEAD LAKE which also can be accessed from the hiway but the best bet from shore is GULL RIVER. Be sure not to hook those muskie northern pike and lm bass that hang around there looking for a crappie /sunfish dinner LOL. If you do get a boat ask one of the locals for the location of "hidden cove" foolinfish Edited February 18, 2009 by foolinfish
drwxr Posted February 18, 2009 Report Posted February 18, 2009 bradford, north of newmarket. holland river at yonge st around the bridge.
Beans Posted February 18, 2009 Report Posted February 18, 2009 Rice Lake...not sure of any shore access since they tore down Sandercock's Camp.
diggyj Posted February 18, 2009 Report Posted February 18, 2009 I would say Rice Lake. You can fish the Government dock in Harwood, Gore's Landing dock. Scugog would be a good bet. Dirk.....
Meely Posted February 18, 2009 Report Posted February 18, 2009 Crappie??? Are there Crappie in the Kawarthas?? Have never caught "a single" Crappie in years !! Meely J/K ........Rice lake is the place. Problem is, like many, many, many other spots, most of the really good spots to shore fish is now Private Property etc......Thanks to all the slobs who ruin for the rest of us. I can recall fishing out of Kewsick years ago and hammering Crappie all day long. Well, those days are loooong gonzo !! Gotta find myself a nice private spot where I can eat my fill.

linweir Posted February 18, 2009 Report Posted February 18, 2009 Tri-lakes (Buckhorn, Pigeon, Chemong) have plenty of Crappie.
yo_guy Posted February 18, 2009 Report Posted February 18, 2009 (edited) Get one of these babies if you are having trouble finding a spot on shore. Edited February 18, 2009 by yo_guy
ERB Posted February 18, 2009 Author Report Posted February 18, 2009 (edited) Get one of these babies if you are having trouble finding a spot on shore. Thing is I am only looking for the spring time so I wouldn't get to much use out of that, but it would be pretty handy. Thanks Edited February 20, 2009 by ERB
ERB Posted February 20, 2009 Author Report Posted February 20, 2009 Thanks for all the great spots guy. Anyone else have any good places to go? Thanks
mikeh Posted February 20, 2009 Report Posted February 20, 2009 I'd say Canal Lake at the causeway, I've seen people fishing there before or Rice Lake in Bewdley .
rbaquial Posted February 20, 2009 Report Posted February 20, 2009 Awesome question! Thanks to those whom answered.
Fang Posted February 21, 2009 Report Posted February 21, 2009 just be sure if you are in the kawarthas section 17, which includes scugog, all fishing is closed including crappie unitl last Sat in April. MNR watches Scugog very close the few weekends prior to opener looking for those that go for the first run in the boat and then pull out a rod.
crappieperchhunter Posted February 21, 2009 Report Posted February 21, 2009 Gotta find myself a nice private spot where I can eat my fill. If such a magical place exists :whistling: Mayhaps we could send peeps the GPS co-ordinates?
ozaibak1 Posted March 6, 2009 Report Posted March 6, 2009 Great thread, I'm looking forward to trying for crappie after ice-out. The only times I've caught them have been at night around docks, during midsummer. This gives a nice selection of areas to try, thanks to everyone who posted.
diggyj Posted March 7, 2009 Report Posted March 7, 2009 Try Adeline Park up in Newmarket. Lots of shore spots and great springtime Crappie action. Dirk.
Fishmaster Posted March 7, 2009 Report Posted March 7, 2009 Lower Grand River in Dunnville hold some huge Slabs Ice Out ...and if the slabs are not on bring your Channel Cat rods and hold on ...
BillM Posted March 7, 2009 Report Posted March 7, 2009 I think I am going to hit either Severn River, Gloucester Pool or Little Lake for crappies when ice out hits.
fishinfool Posted March 8, 2009 Report Posted March 8, 2009 Can't wait, I'll be on Balsam on the opener of Crappie. There are numerous real hot spots and lots of big slabs to be had.
Nanook Posted March 8, 2009 Report Posted March 8, 2009 [beans, CPH, do you think we should let Meely in on "the PLACE?"
ohhenrygsr Posted March 8, 2009 Report Posted March 8, 2009 Is it hard to catch Crappie? what is the basic rig?
