  1. Have you ever looked into buying a new outboard motor? Many people are shocked when they see the price tag on a brand new one.
  2. May be stator. Get someone to look at it before buying any parts.
  3. You might wanna contact the police. If the guy that hit him took off, he possibly passed you at some point. Sounds like an awful thing to see.
  4. My 2 best are 1"gulp alive and 2" power minnow. I never use live bait for crappie now. If the bite is on 2" gets the nod. Slow/ finicky days i use the 1" gulp. Always under a float.
  5. Nice work. Looks like new. You are probably the only person that will ever notice any imperfections. How thick plywood did you use?
  6. At kipewa almost 20 years ago in june. Mid day was always slow fishing for anything other than lakers. Someone decided we should run up the lake thru "the chute" and to the beach with some beer. Fun trip that ended abruptly. Within seconds of getting to the beach we were swarmed by super aggressive deer flies. I actually saw a dragonfly grab one right in front of my eyes. Picture 7 guys running back to the boats with their arms waving like lunatics. Straight back to camp to apply after-bite. We were all covered in polka dots for the rest of the week. Good times
  7. Oh ya, and here's a tip. Try flat raps just under the surface with short twitches and pauses in those shallow sections. #9 & 11 cast like bullets. Keep them outta the weeds and rocks though, the lip is glued on. Not meant for bumping cover. Good luck. Just thinking about river smallies on the jerk is uplifting.
  8. I picked up a 6'6" one piece MH Fast crucial. The last series they made with cork, the butt on this rod is short. You could probably find one on ebay. Paired with a 2500 ci4 it's my lightest combo. The tip feels weightless, wicked when you get hit on a pause. And its got lots of backbone for solid hooksets. This is a great rod for bombing #10 xraps with 10 lb braid in rivers. No need for leaders. I like 6'6" for maneuverability. Casting under trees, setting hooks under trees etc. I've tried 7'and up and find that longer rods are more of a hassle for the minimal gain in casting distance. The new "all black" series is nice but feel tip heavy. Maybe with a heavier reel like a 3500 FJ it would balance better. If you can spend over $200 try to find any loomis in 783 or 784 with a short butt. I don't see many st croix rods in this action.
  9. I'm a big fan of the #8 smelt for night eyes. Also really like the medium size 3-5 ft craw for bass in rivers. The price is worth it in my opinion. The finish on the lures holds up well compared to most other baits I use. My only complaint is that they don't make a perch pattern smelt. Xraps and husky jerks in perch have been a big part of my arsenal for the last few years. To me the live target perch is inferior. Put stripes and a bit of green and orange on a smelt and live target will have another winner.
  10. Prevent future rusting. Keep some wine corks in your tackle trays to absorb moisture.
  11. A tool that saves time will increase your efficiency. It will probably retain its value as well. Good purchase in my books.
  12. I find that wetting my "drag" fingers helps to let line out more smoothly when a fish runs. Pulling back on a fish and putting a big arc in the rod takes away from the rods shock absorption. Try not to pull straight back and keep the rod in a position that will allow it to bend and absorb the shock of headshakes. Also, heavy pressure for hook set then back of a bit and let'em freak out a bit before the fight really starts.
  13. Usually the fish move UP river from the mouth. They can travel 20 miles in a few days. So start at the mouth and keep moving UP until you find them! Good luck!
  14. I've got a funny story about how a dummy broke my compre. I almost cried. I'll leave those details out... but I shrugged it off and brought it in to my local tackle shop. Over the counter replacement / upgrade to the new "walleye" series. Phew, don't like the way the foam handle compres balance. This was back in April. I'm a satisfied customer. So your broken cumara... is it the new style or an old one? I suspect that stock on old model cumara is low. I don't buy shimano gear because of how it looks, price, or for the warranty. 100 percent performance. Their reels are solid. Their rods are light and strong. If you break one it's almost a guarantee that someone that handled that rod at some point did something they shouldn't have. A sharp impact might crack the blank. All you have to is load it up on back cast and snap!!! Graphite + impact=damage.
  15. Anti fatigue mats. Or hit up your local auto wreckers for floor mats.
  16. Sometimes just cradling a smallmouth by its belly is enough to get it relaxed so you can jam your thumb into a portion of its mouth that isnt loaded with trebles. Its pretty amazing just how relaxed a bass or walleye gets when handled by the belly.
  17. Never tried jigging for salmonids in open water but have had success slow jigging in current. Subtly swim a jig with a 3" or 4" power minnow within 2 feet of bottom. Most bites feel like your jig somehow became a big sponge. Kind of a wierd sensation to describe. But once you set the hook on a sponge it doesn't take long to realize you are attached to a silver torpedo. AWESOME!!
  18. My trip to NZ I spoke with quite a few locals. One of the tackle shops I visited I was told about these obese browns that live in hatchery outflows feeding on pellets and anything else they can fit in their mouths. This record fish is undoubtedly a hatchery fed wild brown. Trout fishing in NZ is unique. Trout are not native but have adapted well and become established in many lakes and rivers. Many fish spend summers in cold streams and winter in warm lakes. It seems odd to be wading an ice cold stream in the middle of summer surrounded by palms and other tropical vegetation. One spot i fished was the mouth of the Waititi river. Lake Rotorua reaches 20 celcius or warmer. Waititi stays cold and is loaded with trout all summer. Fish up to 5 pounds are common and a 10 pound resident brown or rainbow is always a possibility. Definitely a place to consider for a unique fishing trip.
  19. Its all hype. A flouro lead is only necessary in super clear / shallow applications. If I'm fishing the Grand or any other SW ontario river, straight braid. Less knots and the fish dont mind at all. The best tied knot will give you XX percent of your lines rated breaking strength. XX will always be a value less than 100. Each knot you add to your setup increases the chance of that XX value being lower.
  20. Sail has large slip floats. Not sure of their largest but they do have 16 gram. I'm sure most tackle shops will have some slip floats. Just maybe not the size you want. Probably 16 gram or more...
  21. You want to deter or catch the cretin? A carefully placed water balloon filled with food coloring or some other dye could help with identification. A good deterrent would be obstacles. Blocked access and General clutter make stealing firewood a more difficult task.
  22. Unweighted soft plastic. 4" power minnow or gulp! Pitch it way past your sighted pike and work it back to your fish super slow. If you can get the fish to turn and look at your bait before it gets close, you can trigger the strike with a really small movement. If he doesnt turn and look on that first retrieve, same bait but try from a different casting position. Remember to work it real slow.... let it sit on bottom.
  23. I don't like Palomar with fluoro. Knots break. Clinch knot with less wraps than you would with mono seems to hold up better. I normally use 6-10 lb of various brands. This is just my personal experience.
  24. that's actually an osprey nest on top of that pole. There is at least one pair of eagles that frequent the stretch of river between Cambridge and Kitchener. Ospreys are everywhere now.
  25. I have a good thermometer. Wanna trade?Without electronics you fish more random patterns and it can be difficult to repeat. Knowing that the depth changed by a foot where you caught a fish can help you zero in on a slight transition they are holding on. Figure out a way to stay in the zone longer and repeat. Can be done with marker buoys but electronics make it faster.
