  1. have a look at the lowrance elite5 combo. it'll be well under 500 with a great lakes chip. the hds5 is considerably more but it does give you the option of networking multiple units together. i dont need the networking and am extremely happy with the elite5.
  2. if you must weigh and are concerned about hurting the fish, weigh the fish in the net then subtract the weight of the net. better than any meat hook or clamp.
  3. barbless muskie fishing is slowly gaining ground but i think many people who are targeting these fish do not want to risk losing 'the fish of a lifetime'. if hooks wont pop out easily and you decide to cut hooks, what's left of them will fall out barbs or no barbs. to your 2nd point, the fish never leaves the net/cradle/water during the unhooking procedure.
  4. you guys wont be dissapointed. i bought the guidewear jacket a few years ago and it works great.. without the gawdy NASCAResque BPS advertising. My bibs are BPS and they work good too.
  5. you'll usually find the right lane to be the quickest way through traffic jams. it's embedded in peoples minds I think that the further left you are the faster you go. so the sheep crowd those lanes. i don't mind sharing with the transports on the right, especially when towing as it's usually a smoother drive than the gas/brake bonanza in the passenger lanes.
  6. I think you missed an all important decimal in your 18000 figure or someone screwed up. it's 1%/month penalty on overcontribution. which works out to $180 in your case. http://blog.taxresource.ca/tfsa-over-contributions/ http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/tx/ndvdls/tpcs/tfsa-celi/txtn/txtn-eng.html
  7. just buy a yammy with the troll assist my 40 gets my 14.5 down to a C-R-A-W-L.
  8. Thanks Brandon, it does. If I recall correctly mine was a 30sec exposure as well, don't recall aperture or ISO. I need a better cam, it taken with an old(ish) Panasonic FZ7 P&S on a tripod.
  9. nice shots, mind sharing what settings (aperture, shutter, iso) you would use to capture lightning? my feeble attempt:
  10. chain pickerel are native to canada and ontario although in small numbers. there are more of them in quebec and east.
  11. i use the double uni on 50lb braid to 50-60 fluoro for pike fishing never an issue.
  12. the good news is its not your tran$mi$$ion the bad news is you did some damage to your $u$pen$ion and/or $teering components. take it into a shop. nobody will be able to guess what is actually damaged over the internet.
  13. expect to pay in the vicinity of $50/mnth to park your boat at one of those self-storage places. check around kijii/craigslist for someone on the outskirts of town with extra land they use for renting out to rvers/boaters. definately get it insured.
  14. unless the fish is lightly hooked or i am using a bait with a single. i usually snip the trebles. much safer esp. when alone in the boat with a bait that has 3 trebles. ccmt those gloves are a bad idea; a hook will have no problem penetrating them then you are stuck with a hook in your hand and a glove you cannot remove/cut easily.
  15. congrats. net is not too bad when you're by yourself.. i leave mine "deployed" and ready for action at the back of the boat when i'm fishn by myself.
  16. 10 minutes is waaay too long. People should stick to commenting on things they know about, seems to me OFNCs become a lot of people who've caught a fish once upon a time saying what's ok and what isn't - there's some seriously flawed advice in this thread. On the flipside, heed advice from those who've been der done dat. Reminds me of a couple going out fishing with a guide.. the wife outfishes the hubby. why? cause she actually listens and does to what the guide has to say. Who better to know the water and the fish in it than the guide or, in this case people with years of experience.
  17. if it's a muskie rod, it's fine. a muskie MH rod is a different animal than a bass MH rod. The 300 is more than adequate and many guys like them for muskie fishing size of lures is one thing as is the size of the fish you're going after. if you're fishing a body of water with 10-15lb snakes you should have little issue catching them on bass gear. if you're fishing water with 30,40lb fish be prepared for heartbreak.
  18. your best bet will be to by 2nd hand. keep an eye on classified here or, better yet have a look at muskies first or ebay. there are reels going on sale there daily. i wouldnt get a shimano that doesn't say calcutta or curado on it but that's just me. the abu reels mentioned are fine.
  19. there aren't many drive-to campsites on the french that i'd be willing to divulge and even less (read:none) official ones unless they wanna camp in a trailer park. all the land is either provincial park (boat-in camping only) or native territory (no camping). go to restoule
  20. any way you slice it you are going to be limited by rapids to a degree. there is still a ton of water to explore no matter which section you choose though. the other limiting factor is the fact that most of the french is either park or native land with not many rv parks. the alban area like randy mentioned is one section that has a few but it's waaay too crowded (for my taste anyway).
  21. sent you a PM. Oct 2007?? Like I tell wifey, anything that was said/done more than 2 weeks ago is null and void.
  22. Where are my royalties for the top left pic? JK bud, good luck!!
  23. you can catch them shallow flatlining in the spring or through the ice in the winter. this time of year you need dipseys/riggers or a perfectly calm day to vertically jig.
