  1. I think it's a stupid bait too. At some point things just get rediculous. Why not take it a step further and tournament anglers can just start throwing nets.
  2. So the one from 10 to 11 is a repeat? Any Musky?
  3. I just noticed it's on tonight (Discovery Channel at 10) and as I know the show has a few fans here so I figured I'd give a heads up. Filmed in "America", it would be cool if it were on Musky. I don't want to get anyones hopes up though, any fish could be the focus, it could even be an old one fimed in South America.
  4. I think you might have a hard time finding a fishing partner. Seems pretty sadistic, possibly psychotic.
  5. I love throwing spinnerbaits as much as the next guy but if you happen to be fishing in an area where Bass see a high amount of fishing pressure they might not be my first choice. I can go down to river here in town (once season opens) and catch Smallies one after another on a Senko but chucking a spinnerbait you might go an hour without so much as a sniff. Mind you that never stops me from throwing them, I love em for musky; makes for a nice easy release too with the single hook.
  6. Thanks Ron, that's great! You too Dutch.
  7. Funny stuff. I'm in the exact same situation as you, except I'm heading out tomorrow. I too am looking for a spot to launch a canoe. I can remember years ago putting in a friends 12 foot tinner at a free little launch somewhere on the North side of the Lake but I have no idea where. I plan on launching at the free launch at the bottom of wood duck drive off county road 2. I have no idea if it will prove to be a good spot. Ron, if you'd care to share the wealth with me too that would be great, if not, that's cool too.
  8. I took my Curado in to have it serviced here in Peterborough last Summer. I was amazed in the differnce between before and after. They cleaned it all up and even replaced a bearing or two if I remember correctly. Felt like a new reel after. Pretty sweet for 25 bucks. Only downside was they continued to send me a bill for the service even though I paid for it at the time. I had to phone them back once a month for 3 or 4 monthes.
  9. That looks fantastic. I've always wanted to add webbed seats to mine, at the moment I'm using milk crates. Does it look like a fairly straight forward do it yourself project?
  10. Cut the original poster some slack. He was most likely trying to do you a favour. I'll bet theres at least a few bargains to be found.
  11. I just picked up a spool of the Fireline Tracer braid, 40 pound test. Always willing to try something different, looks funky and for 14 bucks why not? I checked, the 65 pound Tracer was still regular price.
  12. As far as gear goes I'd suggest buying a quality Rod but used. I love the St. Croix line but in your research you'll come across alot of other good ones. You'll end up paying less than you would for a mediocre new rod and if you find you don't get into musky fishing in a big way you can resell it for very close to what you paid for it. 7'6 MH is a versatile rod. Likewise, don't go crazy regarding lures, although its fun and gets addictive quick. Start with 3 or 4 lures. Their was a recent thread where folks choose their favourites.
  13. 9 inch weighted Suick, perch pattern black and silver inline spinner (bucktail) with big white Kalins Grub Don't let the Suicks' looks fool you. I avoided buying one for years; thought they just looked so basic/plain that they couldn't be effective. I was very wrong; I plan on throwing one alot this year.
  14. Thanks for all the replies. Axe worked pretty well, opened up a few old holes as suggested. I was surprised at the thickness of the ice, looked close to 12 inches. Initially nobody else was out there to irritate; was damn cold.
  15. I'd planned on doing a little ice fishing tomorrow on Chemong most likely; probably close to the causeway where I've seen some huts. I've just noticed that my two piece auger is messed up, the handle is squashed and the 2 pieces won't thread together. I've got a firemans axe, axe blade on one side and pick on the other. Providing the ice is not overly thick (or thin) I should be ok, no? Considering this will be my only outing of the season I don't really want to spring for a new auger. Thanks
  16. I bought one. Can't remember the model, xxh or something. I ended up selling it shortly after; it was just way too much. I found the rod heavy, and the two piece handle did not line up properly. The rod felt really cumbersome. I think your alot better off buying a gently used St. Croix for the same or possibly less cash.
  17. I should have mentioned it was a square backed model.
  18. Thanks for the reply. 6-8mph is actually pretty encouraging considering the size of your boat compared to my canoe. I'm very capable of dock bashing regardless of what I'm piloting. I think it's genetic after watching my pop dock his sailboat. Does that motor do a good job of snaking/chewing it's way through the weeds?
  19. As I recently came into a 14 foot Sportspal I've been looking for a small motor for it. Thought I had a 2hp Johnson lined up but decided to pass on it when it wouldn't start. I've had a few people offer me older gas weedless motors and I don't really know anything about them. I understand that the prop sits at a downward angle rather the typical 90 degrees. My main question is how much speed is lost in favour of weedlessness. Is it worth it? Do they actually work well? Would a canoe and a 3 be able to power through heavily vegetated areas? At the moment I'm considering a late 70's 3hp weedless Evinrude. I'm not looking for the canoe to fly across the lake but I'd like to be able to move with something resembling speed in open water, maybe 12 to 15 km/h. Any thoughts?
  20. Sweet. That's good speed. Thanks for the reply. Curious, 2 or 4 stroke?
  21. Howdy. I figured I'd change things up a bit for 2012 so I swapped my 12foot tin boat for what I thought was a 12 foot square ended (not full transom) sportspal. After doing a few measurements I'm pleased to discover that it's actually a 14 footer(I think)in really good shape. I've lined up an older 2hp Johnson that I can get for a good price and was wondering if anyone had a similar set up? Good combo? I imagine the 2 hp would provide enough juice as I do the majority of my fishing alone but wondering if I should hold out for a 3hp? Any idea on top speed with the 2? I'm attempting to simplify things this year, minimal tackle and just 2 rod.I realize it's not a speedboat. Also, anyone ever add/install webbed seats? I'm not a big fan of the foam seats they come with. Had them in my old 12 foot pointed sportspal(canoe is actually closer to 10)and can't say I really liked them. I'd also kind of like to add a yoke to it, figure it would make carrying it easier, although it's doable over the shoulder. Thanks. Really looking forward to spring, I can think of dozens of rivers, bays and ponds I'm dying to get into, places I could never have got into with my aluminum boat. Cheers
  22. Man, looks pretty sweet down there. Nice read Garry. Should be -16 in Peterborough tonight, -27 with the wind. And colder tomorrow.
  23. I don't know if it works but I've heard the rubberized rocker guard Canadian Tire sells seals reasonably small leaks. I've been waiting for it to go on sale, it's about 9 bucks a spray can at regular price.
