  1. I've never waxed my boat, but my buddy swears by it, and his rig always looks sharp. I think he just uses whatever he puts on the truck!
  2. The majority of the posters in this thread would do well to heed this advice!
  3. Great outcome!! Glad to hear it!
  4. Oh no
  5. Yes, it won't take much for that lake to recover. It is a walleye factory.
  6. I bought worm harnesses for $1-1.50 each, johnson silver minnows for. $2 each. A bunch of xraps and husky jerks for $5-5.50 each. Bell weights and some terminal tackle for peanuts. I saw ugly sticks for $25, okuma rigger rods go for $22. Lots if spoons and mepps musky killers for great prices. Overall good deals to be had, but they are getting out of fishing tackle completely so that's the end of it. You pretty much had to get there at the start of the sale. A few of us cleaned out a lot of the good stuff on the first day at our local tsc. All that is left is crap now.
  7. My local is pretty well cleared out of anything good now. Luckily I did a lot of the clearing!
  8. It will slip. I only own one of those shallow spool deals but you still need 3 or 4 wraps of mono before you put on the braid.
  9. The problem with pickerel is that everyone wants them for dinner. I certainly harvest a share of them, but I put more back way more than I keep. Our cottage lake has a decent population if you know where and how to target them, but if myself and the others who are on them where to keep limits every time out, how long would that last? They are bar none my favorite fish to catch followed closely by fall steelhead. I make sure that we keep enough each summer for just a few fish frys, and the rest get put back, or tanked for a little bit until we get a picture, then released. I will sometimes keep 2lb smallies in place of picks if we want a fry up . They taste pretty good and are pretty prolific most places. I wish more people would stop looking at bass as a catch and release fish, and treat them as a food source. The picks could use a break. It's nice to see the government take a firm stance somewhere . They won't do it here!
  10. I have a humminbird 385ci that I use for ice fishing and as a portable unit. It's pretty user friendly and as a sonar it's pretty decent. I used it just last week, and while I can definitely tell the difference in returns between it and the higher end unit on my boat, it's still pretty darn good. It's excellent for ice fishing, and has flasher mode as well as graph. I also have a mount rigged for it to put on the front of my atv while driving for the navionics. It's replacement is the 386ci I believe. Don't bother going for the down imaging unit if you look at humminbird as I believe you can only use one frequency on the ice transducer. Another bit bigger unit that's pretty nice is the 597. I had this on my boat previously.
  11. I fish alone early mornings at our family cottage, and the odd time locally. Otherwise I am blessed with a couple of fishing buddies who are great company, show up on time, have no need to decide what to eat or how we'll split expenses etc. and who generally make things pretty pleasant. I also fish with my 2 older boys pretty regularily. Overall I enjoy the company, and the social aspects so I prefer to fish with someone or even in a group, but I don't mind being alone.
  12. Get to dealer ASAP. If warranty just expired yesterday, you'd be foolish not to. Knocking and clanging are never good, and in this instance wether it's major or minor, the sooner you can get in the dealers door the better just in case It's a major failure. You've got a better than average chance of coverage if the warranty just expired and you take steps immediately.
  13. It's average to decent pay for a ministry enforcement job. Good luck.
  14. I have a Dakota 20 as well, also with Ibycus. I think it was Dana who helped me get it set up with the maps (thanks again!). It works great and is super easy to use. I wouldn't buy anything now that doesn't have a touch screen. That said, if you have a smart phone, I would just use google maps. My automotive GPS has been collecting dust since I got my first iphone in 2010.
  15. You have to pay to play these days. I'm as cheap as the next guy, but life is short and I don't nickle and dime my hobbies. I also don't smoke, and I wouldn't spend even $4 on a beer at a bar. Mind you I might drink one 40 ounce bottle of rum in an entire year. $20 is getting to be pretty standard these days, not that I'm happy about it, but it is what it is. I'm darn sure not running 30+ minutes down a river just above idle to save myself $20 and maybe return to a break in at my truck as he guy above mentioned. It's called penny wise and pound foolish!
  16. I have a 7 inch sonar mounted with the larger ram ball mount. All I have are stainless steel washers back there. No problems.
  17. Nothing more than a black and white sonar is necessary, and will still put fish in the boat every time. It all depends on what you want to do with it, and if you like the latest and greatest. I would sooner have a GPS/2D sonar combo well before I would look for DI or SI. The GPS will definitely help you put more fish in the boat.
  18. In use DI all the time to determine what type of weed growth I might be looking at, I also use it to see if that bottom hugging hump is actually fish with their bellys close to bottom, or just some miscellaneous gumbo . Once you get used to it, and run it splitscreen with your 2D, it's very useful. If your budget can support it, I'd go 7 inch screen. I don't have side imaging, but when I can scrape up an extra $600 for the box and transducer, I'm going to get it. I've used it on friends boats, and it's pretty cool. Humminbird makes some pretty solid units, I don't think you can go wrong there.
  19. My experience, and that of several friends with 6 cylinder pickup trucks is that they eat gas so badly, you may as well buy a full size. Which is why I own an f150 now.
  20. What, you mean people should do their research, and aquire the equipment required by Canadian law before launching their vessel instead of just blaming law enforcement for their troubles? Poppycock!
  21. They sell a little orange pail at canadian tire that contains all of those items. It's $12. It's certainly not the extent of my safety equipment on my boat, but it is what I hold up when I get checked.
  22. At least we know there is one!
