We used to use what we called skein burgers for winter steelhead. They're not always the dainty eaters they're made out to be. That said, you can always cut the skein into smaller pieces and tie those.

Good stuff Chris. Really nice photos and a sweet looking canoe. Last crack for local brookies next weekend.

I've done it but I wouldn't do it again unless condtions were absolutely perfect and boat traffic was very quiet. Those big swells and cruiser wakes will throw the canoe around pretty good not to mention dealing with a big fish boat side.

Another vote for Citywide, though it's listed as Citywide Propeller Repair now. Buddy took off most of his skeg and most of two blades. He ordered a new prop and went to Citywide to get the skeg repaired. For no additional charge he fixed the prop that my buddy assumed was toast. Within a couple hours of dropping it off it was as if it never happened.

Here's a picture of a "bronze rock pigeon" that seems pretty close. https://www.flickr.com/photos/wolfread/4027947607

Nice shootin' Andrew. Looks like some good memories were made. And nice fire.

Napken Lake, a disaster in the James Bay Lowlands, report
Chuck Enwinde replied to chris.brock's topic in General Discussion
The one I tried to steal back was also considerably larger, ooh for one more crack. I'm not sure the exact size of Adam's fish but I can say it barely fit in the cradle. Think I've seen that guy on TV before, either way he looks pleased to have met you, -
I got stopped in one on Hwy 11 about 15 years ago. CO asked if I'd been fishing, I said "not yet, but what are the best brook trout lakes in this area?" . It sped the process along nicely. lol.

If you're anywhere near Georgetown there is a guy named Randy that works out of his garage. He rebuilt the carb on my Nissan outboard for a very reasonable price. You can find his contact info on kijiji.

I can heartily recommend not portaging to Provoking Lake. You almost need climbing gear for that one. Plus I'm not a fan of splake lakes that have bass as a general rule. I'll shoot you a pm but you'll want to temper your expectations a bit as the fishing along the corridor is generally not great.
-
I've fished them all with limited success. Seems like you're looking for splake specifically? Will you have a canoe that you're able to portage?

Opener is the fourth Saturday in April. As to your question, you could have lazy fish spawning in the first run up from the lake and at the same time have fish so far up the same system that they run out of water.

Thin braids can and will cut your hands if you hook a fish that wants to go for a run. I use the same tip ups for big pike as I do for brookies. I prefer the thermal (disc) ones. I spool them with heavy dacron and tie on a little cleo or similar with the hook removed. For pike I attach a wire quick strike rig to the cleo - for trout its a few feet of flouro to a small hook.

A cheap tip up or two to set up outside the hut. Kids love running for flags - plus it gives them something else to keep an eye on.

You'll have more options and save some $$$ if you can swing a mid week trip. Most of the good operators will have limited availability on weekends until later in the season (when the fishing tends to slow a bit). And most waive the full occupancy clause for midweek trips.

Take a look at the Kahtoola micro spikes. Not cheap, but you won't lose one on the walk back.

I was on a small lake North of Norland on Saturday and it had about 3 inches of refrozen slush with about a half inch of black ice. Another small lake near Bancroft had even less. The snow up there has really buggered up the ice making on the lakes that were already skimmed when they got dumped on.

Good fun for sure. Shoulders probably won't be right till about Wednesday, but it's the good kind of sore. I think the last thought I had before passing out was, thank God for that little Merc.

I have the bigger one too. No complaints thus far. They go on sale at CTC quite often so I would be hesitant to pay full pop. Also, they turn in to giant kites when its windy, always sink one of the anchors before you open it up.

Large live minnows (bait) between Kitchener and MacTier
Chuck Enwinde replied to KraTToR's topic in General Discussion
There is All Nation tackle, and the Toronto Outdoor Store about a block away from one another at 401 and 400. Both usually have large minnows - if the other places don't pan out. -
Yes, I've driven down it a few times - but in a truck. It wasn't bad but I couldn't say for certain if a car would make it unscathed. Next time I'm down it (probably a couple weeks) I'll pay a little closer attention and let you know.
-
I'd say its somewhere in between 4x4 and car accessible. I haven't been down it yet this year but I would think anything with a bit of ground clearance would be ok.
