  1. Finally made it back in. Been an incredibly busy first half of summer.. almost 8 weeks of steady company threw wrenches into Camp plans. However.. we're starting this year with some new gear. New CRV, new aluminum trailer.. and most importantly a new Honda Rubicon. Covid had put much of our new equipment plans on hold but business is back to normal again.. actually better than ever.. so it was time to get er dun. My old 4 wheeler 2001 Rubicon was getting a little old in the tooth.. and will now be retired for farm duty here at home. I'm seeing big rides in my future as I've also staked some claims near camp and will be taking out my prospecting gear once again.. only this time at my leisure. So Monique and I headed up on Monday and thankfully this time the bugs had subsided.. two weeks ago it was near unbearable. Monday was hot so put in a tiny ac that we used to have for the tents.. worked like a charm and didn't hardly stress the genny. I took a day for a big ride down to the area I want to go over which is nicely accessible. Also got up close and personal with a big bull moose.. huge rack and completely covered in velvet, and the rest of the time was spent chilling on the dock, eating and of course trolling up and down the river a couple times a day. Fishing was fantastic.. nothing big in size but 20 to 30 pike and bass per run. All barbless and c and r. We spent a bit of time at our pickeral spot one evening and managed three eating sized ones not very big.. put about a dozen put back but we've never in 15 years landed a big one in our stretch of the river which remains a mystery to me. Brought the office with me as well and was able to spend a half hour a day keeping up with customer service. Also late last year we invested in a new fish cooker and a cast iron wok. Wings and fish are staples for us up there and I got to tell ya.. what a job that thing does.. also made myself a nice 2 in thich white pine cutting board for fish cleaning outta the bugs lol.. anyway here's some pics. Enjoy.

  2. Man, it has been a very bizarre ice fishing season! It was our first good ice fishing season in a few years! Lots of good ice out there, if fact the first year in a while that we've seen truck out there but the latest snow that we had received has made it a mess out there> Not sure I'll get out there again this year. One interesting thing that I noticed this year, was the number of BIG JUMBO's that stayed relatively shallow <15 FOW. We did catch some great fish, lost some possible giants and hope that conditions improve to the point where we can get out again!

  5. My buddy Rob from Cleardrift, sent me his new salmon embryo poured soft beads and I put my twist tie to them . This IMO ,is the best alternative to keeping roe from fish that will produce many more fish to spawn and keep the future of fishing great . It took me some trial and error to get this tie workable without losing the eggs off the hook . I tested it last year pulling from snags and what not and seems to hold well . These beads absorb scent as well .

  6. I was recently tasked with building a split rear grip casting rod utilizing some young Moose Antler for a friend. I got started on it a few hours ago and two hours later this is where I'm at. Thanks for looking. I'd also like to extend Happy Father's Day wishes to all the Dads here, I hope your Sunday includes a little fishing time.

  7. I have not been on Loughborough Lake the last 2 winters, even though it is only half an hour from my home in Kingston. The ice has been sketchy, and I am not religious enough to walk on water............ This winter we have good ice, probably on all of Loughborough, but certainly on one of the spots we fish on the south shore. A buddy of mine has been out a few times, and caught some nice lakers, and he invited me to join him a couple days ago. We had 8 or 9 inches of good ice, with maybe five inches of snow on top, but no slush. We were in 65 FOW according to his graph. I used to own a Vex, did not care for it too much and gave it away, then bought a Marcum LX7, which was a very nice unit but fairly heavy, and I rarely used it, so I gave that graph to a younger fellow who I figured would get more use out of it. So even though it would have been useful to watch a graph whilst jigging for greys, I did not have one. I watched my rod tip instead of a screen........ Going back quite a number of years, I would fish a large dead bait (especially smelts!) on bottom with one rig, and jig a white tube jig on my second rig. Both produced lakers, and it varied by outing whether the fish preferred the meat on bottom or the imitation up higher. Often enough we would see a streak coming up off bottom, reel the bait away, and WHAM! a laker would take the fleeing bait. My buddy reported that white tubes were not getting any interest at all this winter. SO>>>>>> I set up a line with a small Williams Whitefish in silver with a red slash on it and a live minnow, about a foot off bottom, and started jigging with a heavy Hopkins Shorty, silver with a dressed treble. Up and down the water column, banging bottom etc etc, nothing. I switched to a small gold Mister Champ, same thing, no hits. OK maybe they want something different - and I tried a larger Rapala Jigging Rap in electric blue with chrome belly, nada. Then a medium sized Williams Whitefish, with the crinkly half gold/half silver finish. No dice. OK, I switched that up for a medium Buckshot in fire tiger colours with the fluorescent chartreuse back. Nope. In the meantime, my buddy was washing a bunch of his tackle, and the only interest he got was on a small black tube about a foot off bottom. The fish would come up and look, maybe hang around for a minute or so, but no hits. It was a cold day with a brisk wind, and not terribly comfortable, holes kept freezing over, etc etc, and I was thinking it might be time to throw in the towel. So I looked again in my boxes of tackle - I am betting most ice anglers, like me, take a hundred or more lures out with them even though we will NEVER use some of them (like that 2 ounce Swedish Pimple we used in the late 80s for Quinte walleye 🙂) Anyways, I spotted a Sutton West River spoon with the silver back and copper inside, and put it on my snap swivel. I was letting it flutter slowly down to the bottom, when I had quite a vicious strike down maybe fifteen feet. And the fight was on, yeehaw! Because the fish had hit so close to the surface, I had it up to the hole fairly quickly. All I could see was a very thick back and broad tail, and away it went, sounding for the bottom... .....and at that moment, for reasons I cannot fathom, my fairly new, decent quality reel decided to loosen off the drag. By several full revolutions of the dial, what the hell??? The laker was now really screaming to the bottom, while I feverishly tightened the drag back up. Fortunately, it was going down not up, and did not get any slack! Anyways, after several attempts to bring it up to the hole, I finally got it out onto the ice. My lure was JUST hanging from its lower jaw. Weighed on a digital scale, it was 12.64 pounds, and my best trout from Loughborough. And yes, I KEPT it, to EAT!!! The flesh was a beautiful orange, and it had a bunch of smelts in the mouth and belly. That was our only fish. We stayed until 1:00, with no more action. But that one fish sure made my day! 🙂 Doug

  8. Had an unexpected opportunity to hit Simco yesterday, turned out CPH was planning on getting out for the day and we were able to hook up. What a great day, we did really well, no idea how many fish we caught but it was plenty. I only kept 10 nice sized perch and 2 herring. I'm not sure how many Steve took home but his pail was a lot heavier than mine. I started off with some of my favorite go to presentations while Steve used some of his own creations, both were catching fish but I can tell you that artificial out caught live bait. So now I plan on spending today making some more grubs for future trips. it's always so satisfying when you catch fish on the artificial baits. We talked to other fishermen in the area, and from all accounts, we did significantly better than most that relied mostly on minnows! So in summary: a great day fishing with great company, some new lessons learned and a nice feed of fish, how can you ask for better than that😊

  9. Most know I have been a toon guy for the past 10 years or so . After many air leaks and then the big blow out last year, I had enough and decided I would either go yak or a small tinny . Put out a , ISO either a yak or tinny, but nothing crazy priced . Got a response from a local Barrie guy about a 12 ft light tinny . Went and had a look see . It was just what I needed. Light , deep and easy to handle . Fits in the back of the Ram and will be there til the notty is unfishable in the fall . First on the agenda will be whitie opener here on Simcoe . Maybe a laker chase or 2 . Then I want to fly fish for some bass and what not all summer . Then the fall salmon and bow runs on the notty . Powerd only by electric motor that I have had for a few years now from fisherman . It pushes this tin banger to almost 4mph . Made sure all was good and now ready for next weekends opener . After thoughts of needed things . A clamp on seat base . I have a nice folding padded seat still from my toons along with strong oars aswell . Bench seats are low and hard on the knees . Maybe an extendable handle so I can sit on the middle bench . Hard to steer the electric from the back bench . Nice to be back in the game for $300 . 😃 Simple man, simple float boat .

  10. Well the inaugural voyage went well this morning, bit of a late start but lines in around 8:30 and lines out at 1pm. It took about 30 minutes to put a program together and once we had it dialed in we did pretty good. My buddy truly had it dialed and at one point had a 5 fish lead on me. I had 4 fish move my rods but only one connected and it was quickly lost. In the closing hour I finally nailed one to avoid the Skunk followed by one more for greaser for my buddy who started the day with 2 greasers before we found where the Kings were lurking. Big fish of the day as probably 22 plus, not bad for an early Spring King. Water temps 44 to 46, staying in 46 was key and no surprise that body baits were the ticket.

  11. A few years ago, my daughter and I started a little project to create a fishing alphabet book. I figured it was a good way for her to learn about fishing, reading and books. I could also use the opportunity to try and convince her that I was a better angler than I actually am. It took about two years of long stretches of procrastination, sprinkled with some focused work, and fishing interruptions to get it done. The original idea was just to create a simple printable book in black and white but as I got more into it, it kept growing with the eventual goal of publishing it on Amazon. I'm really happy with the end result and would love for some people to see it. The book is called "L is for Lunker" and is available on Amazon. I'm also more than happy to send anyone a digital copy of the book. Just send me a pm.

  13. Hi all, Seems like we are getting a somewhat 'normal' winter this year. Lots of snow and lots of ice with a slow and steady thaw happening. Been out lots, for every species, really nice to have the options of whatever mode of transport takes your fancy, be it sleds, quads, sXside, or just jump in your truck.

  15. 😆 Yesterday was my first outing on the ice here . Lots of bait, no whities . Was getting lots of tag hits on my larger blood worm for whities, so this morning, I tied up some smaller ones for the high hook . They worked great. Just enough bait to chow down on for a lunch snack. So so scrumptious 😋 20250125_082331.mp4

They're all hardcore Steelheaders and I know that one lucky attendee is going to be blown away upon winning this assortment of high quality killer baits. Many thanks for all of your considerations and generousity Brian as well as your expediency in delivering. Cheers Bud

  17. Been some years since last fishing upon North America’s record book lake trout stage, a small group of the finest gentlemen, eight us settled into Plummer’s Arctic Circle Lodge in the Northwest Territories… Didn’t actually think I’d ever be back but hey, fish happens!! And so yeah, just another bountiful slay with hundreds of hungry lakers for all, we wouldn’t expect anything less, but the trick for me is always catching “the one,” ya know!? Anyways, this greying, red beard Viking shared a tin vessel with an ancient, melodious, white Wizard friend, our very own OFC'er Doug or "AkaSHAG" on the site here, and together we cast spells, whispered some secrets and sang fish tunes while plundering the incredible trout waters of Great Bear Lake. Enormous lake trout from world record waters. Hundreds and hundreds of fish caught and northern scenery plenty might never see, if your pulse beats for fishing, you’d be either dead or dumb not to come along on this one. 18. Got out with with DpBond on Simco yesterday, we had a really nice time, fishing was a little slow but we managed 25 decent perch, 1 herring and a smelt that hit a Swedish pimple 😂. Going to wait out this cold front before planning on more trips I usually find the best catching is as things start to warm up but it sure was nice to get out.

  19. Hi Everyone My son and I just got back from our Kawartha trip . We fished Buckhorn , Pigeon and Sturgeon during the week . The weather was 80 the first couple days then in the 50's and dropped down over night Wednesday to 29 we had frost on our boat seats . Several days we had winds over 10 mph making it a little rough fishing .We boated 4 Muskies had 14 hits and 7 follows we only count hits if we see its a Muskie and most of them were near or at the boat . We had a couple follows from bigger fish but most were slow and behind the baits a ways . Only 1 caught trolling a 35" er we usually boat 5-8 during the week trolling while eating our lunch or taking a break from casting . We took a good Canadian friend out fishing with us 2 days but he didn't have any luck . The last day I got lucky and caught a 44"er put up a good fight and even jumped clear out of the water . It also cost my son some $$$ I got big fish of the week .I hope I'm able to make the trip next year I'll be 80 and its getting hard to cast those Muskie baits all day LOL . I also caught 4 Walleyes and 2 bigger LM on my Muskie lures 2 of the walleyes were 25" . Tight Lines Hank Flory Jr

  21. Went to Meaford for kings. Not much on the finder. Ran new gear and everything worked great. Big Jon electric is really fast compared to my old one. The big Jon free and easy release works ok and I got one fish on it. I’ll have to try it again to see if I’m going to keep using it. 2/2 on lake trout. Nice morning out.

  23. Went to st Clair for musky. Had a hit and straight drag. Sun was bright so the Bimini was up. Buddy grabbed The rod and hit the Bimini not reeling fast enough and slack line fish gone. Got a small pike and a channel cat on Muskie lures. Not enough action pulled to plug. went to Erie for pickerel and limited out in 3hrs.

  24. just got back last night from another trip into Lac Dumoine and 10 Mile Lodge. Another fun trip in the books. Tough fishing but we caught our limit and had two great fish fries. One of the things we also had to do was put a memorial plaque on an island on the lake to commemorate the life and good times of my buddy Bob Proulx, who passed away last fall. Got it done (pictures to follow) and had a little shot of Sambuka as a toast. Anyway, the fishing was really tough, probably the toughest in 35 years of going up there. I don't know if it's all the storms, the wacky weather or the high water but the bigger ones just weren't bitting. And everyone we talked to were saying the same. Still had a great time, though.

  26. An update to my previous thread, the handle on the G Loomis 1562 GLX prototype handle rebuild is now done. As per the customer's request the original decal was not removed so a work around was required, building and installing the new handle from the back of the blank. It does present some challenges especially when the customer states exactly where the reel will sit with new fixed reel seat, which in this case was 8.5"s from the back of the rod. And while the customer is a young man he wanted the rod restored in an Old School fashion, figured Walnut wood seat, grip inserts and wood/mushroom but cap. The next step will be to replace the original garbage Recoil guides with high quality Fuji's. The following are a series of pictures I took for him from the beginning. Cheers

  27. Well,I was able to hook up with our member this morning ,as he was fishing with an outfitter on the 2nd line. Met up with him and handed over a whole new batch of baits . Canada post, nor wind nor blowing wind and low vis, will stop the loony bin bugs and grubs guy ,from getting to those that want. Well, to a limit 😆. It was a nasty morning, but it was a day that was special, so I made the extra effort to make sure the day started off well . Must be the newfie in me byes.

Kept the only 2 for this season to smoke and vac pack for ice season . 1st 2 were on a tandem set up . Cleardrift 6mm soft bead salmon embryo egg . Next 3 were on a pinky worm . My buddy did this up for me . Very cool remix of the original photo.

  30. Tis the season. 4 days on the tribs. So many salmon this year . Trying to find holes without them is almost Impossible. So,just fish below them 😆. We sure need some rain though . Salmon are trapped in holes and sitting there with loose eggs in them . Couple of my rewards this weekend . This morning I had a nice buck smoke a stone I tied up . A variation.

Sucks as that is where I seen the wolverine last trip up. Anyway, here is a few of the 2000+ the cameras took. Not all dates and times are set correctly on some of these cameras.

  34. Have not fished alot, but when I do,it,s more to test out my ties. My new high hooks have been killing it . Since I was very close to a deep drop off, I thought I would give a try for a white fish . Wasn't long before a fish came in and did a slow chase and hooked up . Thought it was a whitie as it was just swinging back and forth on the way up . Half way up, it was not to be . Big run back down . Laker. All good . Play it out,in the net, quick pic and back it went . Played with some pannies on the new high hooks . Working well .

  36. Hey Lew, Hopefully I can clear this up for you. I wont provide my opinion in order to keep this thread open lol. But to put it in plain language Trump imposes 25% tarrif on Canadian lumber entering the united states, the American purchaser of the lumber pays a 25% tarrif on the lumber. The money is collected by the US government. Canada imposes a retalitory tarrif on american goods a boat for example, the purchaser (your local boat dealer) pays a 25% tarrif on the boat here in canada that is collected by the canadian government. That cost would be passed down by the boat dealer to you or me when we go to buy a shiny new boat. So contrary to your understanding, canada does not pay both ways. In fact trump has been somewhat succesful in confusing americans into believing that by imposing these tarrifs, countries like canada and china will pay for them. This is not the case at all. The entire concept of a tarrif is to promote manufacturing within your own country by penalizing anyone that purchases products from a foreign manufacturer or supplier. The most recent tariff on canadian steel is an easy one...by imposing a 25% tarrif on canadian steel the US government is incentivizing any american that needs to purchase steel, to purchase it from american sources. This should boost the economy in a place like Pennsylvania that have massive steel manufacturing. Part of me even questions if Trump understood what he was doing when he initially brought up the concept, hence the continued pushing back of the imposing date. You may ask yourself then, why is everyone making such a stink about the tariffs here in Canada if its the americans that are going to pay them. The answer is that the Canadian Economy relies heavily on selling its products such as oil, lumber, potash, uranium, etc etc to the united states. If canadian resources and products are hit with a 25% tarif Americans will immediately turn to purchasing these products from other markets where tarifs are not imposed, and thus this will severely damage the canadian economy. One blatant oversight by the Trump administration was the idea of tarffing canadian oil. What they failed to realize is that Canada currently discounts oil by upwards of $17 a barrel to the united states. By imposing a tarrif on canadian oil, Canadian oil companies would essentially be forced to begin marketing their oil elsewhere while americans would be stuck going to the open market. For areas of the United States that are heavily reliant on Canadian oil due to their distance from the american coast line such as the american midwest, transportation costs to move oil from foreign sources would skyrocket the price. These areas of the states are heavily reliant on oil produced in canada and moved down via pipeline saving significant transportation costs. If the American midwest was forced to pay a 25% tarrif, they are then looking at 1. paying 25% more immediately, plus most likely needing to go and purchase oil on the open market which they would then need to transport to the middle of the continent. I dont think theres much appetite for americans to pay what 40? 50%? more for their oil. This is the real catch in all of this. Trump can threaten tariffs etc all he wants, but at the end of the day the USA does not have/has not enough resources to sustain itself. It doesnt have the oil reserves, lumber, potash, uranium, etc etc to provide itself. It will always be reliant on countries like canada to provide those resources to it. Thats what makes this all a little nerve wracking too while Trump keeps bringing up making canada its 51st state...we just saw what Russia decided to do when it needed some resources...could USA do the same? Youd hope not.

Really appreciated the incredible effort you made, Misfish, to deliver the package of lures to me before going out (since CP can’t seem to deliver packages from Barrie to Waterloo in 2.5 weeks!) You drove through some nasty weather to make it out to our meeting place and I truly applaud your commitment to service, dedication and generosity. You are a class act and I’m glad to have met you in person, Brian. BTW, those bloodworms worked very well - thanks for everything. You are an asset to the fishing community! Michael

  40. I'm currently working on rebuilding one of the original 10, 1562 Loomis GLX prototype blanks (my 6th to date), and I've been playing with a new resin medium that has had me see numerous failures on the grip wood inserts. The frustrations have been incredibly frustrating to say the least, the learning is as of yet, not perfected, but I am making progress. This is a series of pictures showing the rear grip from failure to success. This was the first finished attempt that shows many air in inclusions in the finish. The results were clearly a failure so I started again by removing the finish. Then I started again with a new perspective and slower more methodical application method.

  41. My son got down for a visit and naturally we had to hit Simco for some perch. I started off with my Simco bugs, (thanks to CPH) and it didn't disappoint. My son started off with a traditional drop shot rig and minnows. He set up a second rod with a Swedish pimple but he tipped it with a small piece of sponge and shad scent (ya I know a little different but it worked) Well, the artificial baits out fished the minnows by a huge margin. We only kept 20 perch, one herring, and two smelt but we caught a heck of a lot more perch. The artificial caught 90% of the fish caught today, with the Simco bug clearly the winner. Another amazing day on the ice! Besides any day fishing with my son is a fantastic day🙂

Thanks Misfish, I nice addition to the black beauty.

  45. Well I finally dusted the cob webs off myself and my fishing gear and got out and got the stink blew off me, Hahaha, first time in a little over a year, and three years previous. I must thank Crowman for this. I don't know how, but some how, he detected that I was in a rut, and I was, big time, and he mentioned that I needed to get out and go fishing. It took a while but I finally heeded his advice and sure glad I did. Can't wait to get out again. If it wasn't for your advise Rick, and I thought about it frequently, I'm not sure I would have. Thanking you very much just doesn't seem like enough. The wind in town here was 40 gusting to 60 out of the west which would have been perfect but when I got to my fishing hole, the Bow River, just 75km SE of town the the wind was brutal and out of the SE right in my face and the water was dirty but still managed to get my Kamlooper out far enough to get this brown. Not a big one but a nice looking one. Not the best picture as I didn't want to spend too much time with him as I intended to release him which I did of course as I do with most all my fish, but it sure made my day and broke the ice for the first fish caught on my new rod and reel. Thank You Rick.

  46. If as an angler, you want to make a conscious decision to support Canadian manufacturers, there is on-line retailer that offers only MADE IN CANADA products.. https://greatcanadianfishingstore.com/ Of course, there is also a lot of gear that comes from China, Japan, Taiwan, South Korea, and Europe if want to avoid US goods. The same for big box stores....Sail and Canadian Tire vs Bass Pro and Cabela's. Personally, for a number of reasons, I've always patronized the smaller local retailers...although I do miss LeBaron's.

  47. Hi all, dropped the kid off at school and then loaded the snow machine for an epic journey of 1.5kms to the ice road for crappie. Had not fished that spot so far this year, and its not my favourite spot, but there are (small) fish there and its close to home. I braved the elements as I was trying out drilling a grid, which I always do for crappie, but this time I had the grid set up so I could chase the fish with the Active Target, worked a treat and with the grid spaced out in 5' increments it was really fun to pin point a hole 20' feet away, walk over , drop a line and see the fish there with my regular fishfinder. Not many big ones today, actually no big ones, but i kept 10 acceptedle sized ones and threw a few drinks back. Its meant to be warmer here the next couple days and i'll be getting out to a better crappie spot for sure...TIGHT LINES!

  48. Hi all, Been colds heck here, so hooked up the Otter and headed out to try my Active target on the ice for the first time. I was not sure of ice thickness or if the creeks were frozen for access, but it was all good, surprisingly there was close to 14" of good black ice, with almost not enough snow for my machine. Anyway, got into some pike before I even got the camera on or the tent set up and then sat for a couple of hours being run a merry dance by some smaller whitefish. I was beginning to think the walleye were on a day of until literally the last cast and watched a 24"walleye smack my line. Got it up, quick picture and back it went, fun couple of hours.
