SmokestackLightnin Posted November 14, 2013 Report Posted November 14, 2013 Looks like the spring bear hunt will be opened in a limited capacity. It's a start. http://northernontario.ctvnews.ca/video?clipId=1043048&binId=1.1142313&playlistPageNum=1
NAW Posted November 14, 2013 Report Posted November 14, 2013 AWESOME!!!! Finally something fun to do in the spring other than stupid turkey hunting!!!!
ch312 Posted November 14, 2013 Report Posted November 14, 2013 According to the OFAH it has not passed yet as it still needs to pass second reading in December.
TJQ Posted November 14, 2013 Report Posted November 14, 2013 Finally.. http://www.thesudburystar.com/2013/11/14/limited-spring-bear-hunt-allowed-in-north
glen Posted November 14, 2013 Report Posted November 14, 2013 "Ontario is proposing a pilot program that will enhance public safety while offering an effective response to nuisance bear issues in the north." So when they cancelled the hunt was it a pilot program to reduce public safety while decreasing the response to nuisance bears?

I'm happy to see this swinging the other way, reminds me of the long gun registry issue.
Bernie Posted November 15, 2013 Report Posted November 15, 2013 (edited) It's only north of Hwy17 according to what I understand. Our area gets left out.I guess the SSS program will be maintained here. Edited November 15, 2013 by Bernie
TJQ Posted November 15, 2013 Report Posted November 15, 2013 Its a start in the right direction.. will be limited to Ontario residents only. Unfortunately that alone may make it worthless to outfitters. Not enough people to set up a real hunt... in my opinion anyway..
Bernie Posted November 15, 2013 Report Posted November 15, 2013 Yes TJ, you would think they would be smart enough to utilize the hunt to include the good folks from outside the country.
TJQ Posted November 15, 2013 Report Posted November 15, 2013 Personally theres not alot of residents that do the bear hunt. It may be they are just setting the whole thing up so theres no real interest, which is what it will be unless the outfitters are on board.
Richie Razor Posted November 15, 2013 Report Posted November 15, 2013 Are bears even good to eat in the spring? All I've ever heard was that the best eating bears are shot in the fall when they've fattened up..... Please explain.
Raf Posted November 15, 2013 Report Posted November 15, 2013 other way around, the leaner the better.
outllaw Posted November 15, 2013 Report Posted November 15, 2013 the only difference will be. that bears that are destroyed will be accounted for in a licence fee. . non-residents have always made up the majority..
aplumma Posted November 15, 2013 Report Posted November 15, 2013 Even with a bear season I am not sure I would hunt them. The few times I had Bear meat it just didn't taste good to me. I don't think I would go to the expense to have the hide cured or a head mount because it isn't something that would have a place in my house. Art

Please explain. other way around, the leaner the better. it depends, age, diet and how the meat was handled/processed....I'd take a fat fall berry bear over a skinny spring any day....bear fat is amazing, makes the best pastry dough, lots of uses for it the bear meat/fat that tastes horrible comes from dump bears and salmon bears....those stinky things are not the best shooters
highdrifter Posted November 15, 2013 Report Posted November 15, 2013 Be nice to see more moose calves... Who knows.. this might help increase the returns..
Richie Razor Posted November 17, 2013 Report Posted November 17, 2013 it depends, age, diet and how the meat was handled/processed....I'd take a fat fall berry bear over a skinny spring any day....bear fat is amazing, makes the best pastry dough, lots of uses for it the bear meat/fat that tastes horrible comes from dump bears and salmon bears....those stinky things are not the best shooters Actually I've seen on that show "the meat hunter"' on oln, the guy target bears that gorge on blueberries, and apparently the meat is like pork, and the fat has many uses.... Very cool.
