manitoubass2 Posted October 18, 2011 Report Posted October 18, 2011 (edited) This is such a complicated topic, so many varying factors. But I'm glad that people are realizing that the "system" we have in place is NOT WORKING for people in general. Not to sound really complicated but the monetary system is horrendously flawed, and since we depend on that system for virtually everything, all is flawed for the most part. Don't get me wrong, there are certain advances that definitely help my family and I live a little easier, but man, I think we need to take a few huge steps back in time to actually move forward and improve peoples quality of living. Whether you agree or not with the protesters, good on them for showing their concerns Just my two cents Edited October 18, 2011 by manitoubass2
limeyangler Posted October 18, 2011 Report Posted October 18, 2011 (edited) Greed? How about this... You work at mcdonalds for minimum wage... And the manager gives you a choice... A $2 raise... Or 2 cents off fries in that store... What would you do? Think about yourself or the community? I know what I'd do... I'd worry about #1 and my family... Maybe I'm off base about protesting reasons... Bit I think this is a good comparison to corporate greed... No? I dont think its a good comparison at all.....considering that the hypothetcal person left with the choice of self interest or altruism/charity/community spirit does not have lobbying powers in governments, or post a profit of $1.41 billion, or $1.35 a share, in the second quarter(July this year) , up from $1.23 billion, or $1.13 a share, a year earlier. tb4me Posted October 18, 2011 Report Posted October 18, 2011 I have no idea what they are protesting about..If anyone should be protesting its the seniors and todays youth..The kids of today wont have much when it comes to their turn to earn a fair and honest living..As for the elderly, I work in the Social housing sector (maintenance contract) its so sad to see so many of them starving and going without, yes here in Canada. I would gladly protest on their behalf but unfortunately I have to work....
lookinforwalleye Posted October 18, 2011 Report Posted October 18, 2011 It all makes perfect sense it`s called socialism, they come out and bash the very system that allows them some type of income to survive. These dolts don`t want to work hard they just want more of your money. When I retire in a few years I plan on becoming a socialist (the champagne variety) and demand more of everything and I want all you working guys to pay for it!!!

adolson Posted October 18, 2011 Report Posted October 18, 2011 The Tea Party is alive and well in Canada Well is a bit strong, considering all of their albums after The Edges of Twilight sucked!
Billy Bob Posted October 18, 2011 Report Posted October 18, 2011 People complain about the following: 1) Union members make too much money 2) CEO's make too much money 3) Big Business makes too much money 4) Teachers make too much money 5) Politicians make too much money Still waiting for "I" make to much money..... The money is out there....just go out there and get it....
adolson Posted October 18, 2011 Report Posted October 18, 2011 this guy is getting in on it too http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rUTDxUicSmo
torco Posted October 18, 2011 Report Posted October 18, 2011 Its about many things and I think that is part of what makes it compelling is these people are saying its just a or b or c, etc its a whole bunch of things that need to be addressed. So the message is not necessarily clear as a save the whales kind of protest. One message that does stand out especially in the US is that the American dream is dead for many. Americans have long prided themselves on the fact that if you worked hard enough take some risks you can become wealthy, whether it ever truly existed I am not sure but the myth seems dead since they bailed out the banks. As the banking community played high stakes poker and lost but instead of being accountable and taking the hit they forced the house (john and betty main street) to foot the bill while they were allowed to stay at the table and make millions more on their money. How would you feel if that was you? I wish them well, as we need change, and it needs to start somewhere, and this could be the start.
mike rousseau Posted October 18, 2011 Report Posted October 18, 2011 Legally lol That's another hurdle to overcome in a tuff economy... The temptation... I can make $1000 a trip in my boat running cigarettes across the river tomorrow... Instead we are just getting by...
Billy Bob Posted October 18, 2011 Report Posted October 18, 2011 I will bet dollars to donuts that EVERYONE at these protests have cell phones from the very corporations they are protesting about. And must will be the best phones money can buy....
Headhunter Posted October 18, 2011 Report Posted October 18, 2011 Well, a dozen of them just walked by my office, surrounded by 8 police and a bunch of media... and most who saw them, couldn't tell you what they were protesting about! HH
manitoubass2 Posted October 18, 2011 Report Posted October 18, 2011 (edited) In my opinion this is just the start of various people realizing how much society and peoples well being have been distorted and destroyed by a flawed system, as I previously mentioned. Part of the issues start with people not having an open mind to how things in our country, and all over the world are operating. But, this shows that people are starting to really think about such topics, and are trying to figure out answers/solutions, as well as showing their displeasure in the current system. The sad thing IMO, is that we are what we consider, "too far ahead" to turn back, when its actually the other way around. Every part of our worlds systems are built on money, and whether we want to admit it or not, its true. And this pertains to education, health care, civil rights, war, poverty etc. When goods and services were available for trade, and it was mans right to harvest the land, we were on the right track. When we allowed the so called economy to control all aspects of living, is where we took a wrong turn. And now like cancer, its effected everything. IMO Edited October 18, 2011 by manitoubass2
ketchenany Posted October 18, 2011 Report Posted October 18, 2011 I don't follow them or know what they are talking about, but they can surely disrupt traffic. At 5 I head north to Hwy 7 as fast as possible! We'll see how many of these "protesters" come out in the rain tomorrow!
adempsey Posted October 18, 2011 Report Posted October 18, 2011 I think this quote explains some of reasoning behind the upset: "It’s that 99 percent of Americans sense that the fundamental bargain of our economy -- work hard, play by the rules, get ahead -- has been broken, and they want to see it restored." http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/ezra-klein/post/who-are-the-99-percent/2011/08/25/gIQAt87jKL_blog.html Although these refer to what's happening in the USA, I think it still applies in Canada.
lookinforwalleye Posted October 18, 2011 Report Posted October 18, 2011 I can hear Judy garland know..."some where over the rainbow skies are blue and the dreams that you dare to dream really do come true"
woodenboater Posted October 18, 2011 Report Posted October 18, 2011 Mark Carney, the governor for the Bank Of Canada called the main message of the movement "entirely constructive", and raised a few eyebrows with this comment so it's got the attention of the guy who tells me what interest I'll be paying on my mortgage. I'm actually glad to see people at least trying to engage in something as opposed to just moaning about it online or amongst themselves. Whether this results in anything is another matter all together. All I know is, the smell of buds was noticeable when I passed by the park today I was also surprised to see that the crowd was not entirely all young lefties but included a number of retirees.
limeyangler Posted October 18, 2011 Report Posted October 18, 2011 im not debating about government and lobbying... i know nothing about government... i dont even vote... im just saying... if most people are given a choice to help themselves and their families well being... or make choices that will benifit the comunity... i think most would chose themselves and their family over strangers... survival of the fittest... if these protests are about corperations controling government... then by all means... I was not debating government or lobbying either, i was just saying that i did not think your Mcdonalds worker anology was good one, considering that making a financial donation to a communtity was easier for powerful (lobbying/influencing political decisions that could benefit you financially) multi-national corporation with quarterly profits in the $illions than it would be for the employee on minimum wage. I would not think of that employee as selfish/self interested in comparison to 'corporate' greed.
mercman Posted October 18, 2011 Report Posted October 18, 2011 We all know what needs to be done, but who is willing to start the ball rolling.Protesting results in nothing but publicity, action results in change. so who jumps first? M2C
