  1. RE the plum booze MB2... Many years ago, a buddy of mine worked at a cherry orchard for the summer. That year, they had a bumper crop. So many, that they were rotting on the trees. My buddy asked his boss if he could take some home as they were rotting and falling off the trees. He was given permission. We loaded up his Corolla's trunk to the brim, probably well over 50 lbs of cherries. My Dad usually made his own wine every year, so we had all the equipment at home to grind a press the cherries. After pressing, yeast and sugar, the bottles of "cherry juice" were stored in the basement. My Dad's experience making wine was strictly based on grapes, which have a higher sugar content, then cherries. We monitored the "juice", but is was not at all palatable, more like paint remover. The 20 odd gallons sat in our basement for the better part of 5 years! One day, my Dad was cleaning up the basement and came across the juice. Still completely un-drinkable, my Dad decided to make something outta the stuff. He hit the "Wine art" store, picking up concentrated sweetener, then the LCBO and a number of bottles of Alcool. (SP) Mixed it all together and again, let it sit for about a year. Well, we ended up with about 20 gallons of Cherry Brandy that, once tasted, didn't last very long. The point of this long winded post, be aware of the sugar content of the plums and also understand that should your current brew not meet your expectations, there are ways to make it palatable, if you have the time and patience. HH
  2. I just wanted to express my appreciation on behalf of myself and wife to the O'shea family for allowing us to join them in their celebration of Jen's life. You're truly a special family and it was obvious to anyone in attendance today, that Jen was a very special person. It was a pleasure to meet "Whopper" and Andy as well. (Whopper, I hope you made it home ok) Wayne and Leah, I hope you find peace soon. I know Jen was smiling down at you today. HH
  3. I would concentrate on areas that have deep water access and weed lines that are still green. Fished the French a few years ago during Thanksgiving weekend and finding still green weeds was difficult. HH
  4. We did bring some back to be delivered to the fellow who had to cancel at the last minute due to family obligations. We felt that since he could'nt come, he'd surely like to at least enjoy a meal, after losing his deposit. HH
  5. If JD doesn't hustle right out of the box on that hit, the Jays lose. Aggressive play has created their "luck" and to some degree and has surprised some teams. Fun to watch with 30 odd games left to play! HH
  6. One's level of paranoia certainly will dictate what one will do as well. Just look to our south to see how well that's working. If I lived in a place where I felt that I would be have any real likelihood of "having to protect myself", I would move. Simple as that. Sorry for the highjack OP. HH
  7. Agreed with Bill 100%. As far as I can tell, we haven't reached the level of crime here in Ontario, that would warrant carrying a concealed weapon. HH
  8. Yah, that's definitely the best shot of the bunch!!! LMAO! HH
  9. FloatnFly, I have a Vermont Castings that I bought new in 2002. You won't have to replace the burners on yours as mine look like they are still brand new. The only "challenge" I have with mine is the frame is rusting out. Everything that actually plays a part in cooking, works perfectly. I expect that one day I will go out to use it and it will have fallen upon itself from the frame rusting. The sear plates, burners etc, will in all likelihood, still work. As far as parts are concerned, I believe the Vermont Castings is out of business, so finding parts could be a real chore. HH
  10. That's good shootin boys! Thanks for the invite Will, but I didn't hit the hay until 3:00am with folks still partying well into the night. Hopefully, next time. HH
  11. My former boss had a cottage in the Kawartha's. They would have multiple break ins every summer. The local OPP described the criminals as "Ma and Pa doing their shopping". They would steal food from their fridge/freezer and any appliance they felt they needed at home. They installed a security system, think "Alarm Force" which only slightly reduced their break ins. It also required them to go to the cottage every time the alarm went off - 2 1/2 hour drive. They eventually just sold the cottage as it was just too much stress to own. The cops told them that they were lucky, because they had run into folks who's cottages were broken into and the thieves used circular saws to cut all the floor joists in the cottage! Yah, there are people like that out there. Sorry for your loss Chris. HH
  12. Wormdunker, just leave space between the rolls on the stick and the bacon will cook evenly. Also, we used half a bacon strip for each roll, which also helps to cook the bacon evenly. But as I mentioned earlier in the thread, coating the fish with fish crisp, then wrapping in bacon was a great combination. Wayne, it's always time! HH
  13. Thanks for doing up the report in a "timely" manner Will! LOL It was a fun trip to say the least. As it was my first time flying in, it certainly opened my eyes as to what a difference it makes hitting a lake that doesn't get fishing pressure. It changed for me anyway, from a fishing trip, to a catching trip! When we first arrived at camp, as Will mentioned, the wind came up huge, forcing us to stay on shore. I grabbed a beer and took a seat on the rock, while Will casted to the adjacent weed bed. His second cast, a pike of about 6 inches followed his lure in, then proceeded to wiggle it's way outta the water and up the rock, chasing FishnSleds lure. About a foot up the rock, it turned and headed back to the water. I looked at Will and said that it looks like their hungry! Dinner that night came from shore in a couple of hours of casting. That to me was just really fun. A huge thanks to both Will and Ken, for the invite, great guys and entertaining conversation without a doubt. And many thanks for helping this newbie out in the planning of the trip as well. If it's pickereyes you want to catch, well, Jembi sure has them in spades... I figured in a rough estimate, that the three of us consumed somewhere in the area of 18lbs of fillets in the five days we were there, as evidenced in the pics above. HH PS.... we marinated some fillets in Frank's Hot sauce for two days in the fridge. (Yes, we were mindful of our possession limits) A quick coating in fish crisp, then, wrapped in bacon on the BBQ was the meal highlight for me anyway. Just a wonderful meal, that I could enjoy every day if I could!
  14. As the owner of a small business, I admit to seeing things differently then those who are employed by the private or public sector. I believe that the leader of the country should be the country's best sales person... they represent us internationally. Sorry can't picture Justin doing that for me... I don't think it's the PM's job to attend "local" community events; that's what local gov is for. HH PS... anyone get their hydro bill this month! Thanks Uncle Katy!
  15. This pending election sure does remind me of our recent provincial election... no one to truly choose from! The fact that "Uncle Katy" took it upon herself to slam the federal conservatives, while endorsing Trudeau last night, certainly doesn't bode well for Ontario, should Harper win re-election. And let's face it, the provincial Liberals haven't exactly been proper custodians of the province, now have they? Ask yourself this; would you like to see Trudeau representing our county at the G7/8 meetings? Does he have the smarts to out think the other leaders? Food for thought. HH
  16. My wife's cousin has been breeding Mals for 25 years. To me, they are over-grown lap dogs! LOL Sure, they will pull a sled all day, but majority of them that I have met, are lazy and would prefer a good nap, to any kind of aggression. They may well be fighters, I just haven't experienced that. That all said, sorry for your loss and maybe a Mal is the right dog for you... size alone might detract from an attack. HH
  17. I like your choice of veggies Chris! LMAO HH
  18. To Bill, Pound boneless chicken boobs flat with a meat tenderizer. Be sure to put the chicken in plastic wrap when pounding. Be sure that the chicken is pounded evenly, so there are no spots thicker than other areas. Sprinkle garlic powder, onion powder salt and pepper onto the flattened chicken and let them sit in the fridge for a few hours. Batter the chicken with flour, then egg wash (with water added to thin it out) then your favorite crumbs... panko works really well. Fry that chicken like you would fish. till golden brown. Once golden brown, just add your favorite tomato sauce then shredded cheese (again your choice) and pop it into the oven on broil. Enjoy.... HH
  19. Well, you can forget about Ducane as they are out of business and you cannot get parts for older ones. I have a Vermont Castings that is on year 13 and aside from the obvious rusting of the body and frame, the burners and valves all function perfectly. It gets used 365, regardless of weather and is natural gas. I think the advice given is good, given your budget. Look for floor models or end of line items that are reduced. On a personal note, I think Webers are over priced and over rated. The materials used by Weber seem to me, to be thin and a result, not capable of retaining heat. HH
  20. Buddies got a Ranger p/u truck. He's had some problems with it that were addressed by warranty. His is only two wheel drive and can be a bit of a bear to keep on the road in winter and it's inherent icy conditions. Food for thought. HH
  21. Same here Joey... no uncommon to see them while fishing the Q. I'd stand up and give them a wave and they would sometimes give us the ole wing dip. Pretty darn cool and great pic Lew! HH
  22. Sophisticated Meatball left over from years gone by? LOL I'll go with slag as well! HH
  23. I hope you folks find peace. There can be no better parents alive then you two. Peace be with your whole family. HH
  24. Did you use live bait? My experience fishing that area was that if you didn't give them meat to chew on, you were going to be hard pressed to get a bite. For us, fishing up stream of Elk Lake, on the river, jig and a worm produced but mostly, just before sun set. HH
  25. Trust me Roy, Terapoopa has definitely stuck! LOL HH
