Shapiro was interviewed and hired, before the Jays took off; they were a 500 team. Shapiro was hired based on his ability to show a profit in a small market arena. I'm guessing he told the Rogers folks what they wanted to hear, that he could take a team that had been losing money for years and make them profitable. I'm guessing that both he and the Rogers folks were shocked by the way the team reacted to the trades and the ensuing winning. Today's news conference should give us an indication of what mind set Shapiro is bringing to the table. We'll find out if he is going to appeal to the fans or try and appeal to the Rogers folks. That goal post has moved as a result of the teams success, let's see if he notices! HH

Shapiro is holding a press conference at 2:00pm today. I'm removing all sharp objects from my pockets. I hope I am wrong. HH

So sad that Lemmy's health is getting worse. He can't even play live anymore. Thanks for the link. HH -
Nicely done! I would have felt sorry for those skinny Pickereyes! Might be inclined to give them a marshmallow and send them on their way! LOL Nice shootin! HH

If you think that price is bad, try getting a quote in the city!!!! My old neighbour had a Manitoba Maple (weed tree) with one branch hanging badly over his garage. They charged him roughly the same amount to remove that one branch and yes, he did get multiple quotes. I'm thinking an OFC gtg with some chain saws and a couple of nimble climbers and tree problem solved! HH

Rogers has fubared this whole situation, from the get go. In any other business, heads would be rolling. I highly doubt that Ed is going to up and quit over this! I am betting the share holders are going to be pretty upset watching MLB's Executive of the Year leading another team to victory. Exactly how does this team convince free agents to join them when they have once again proven that they are completely inept at running a baseball team? I had high hopes for next year and I will reserve judgement on Shapiro until he actually stands up and tells us how he is going to make the Jays a perennial contender. HH

Has she got her heart set on destroying this province?

Last I heard, one of the final negotiating points was that the teachers want to keep their sick days and continue to accumulate them over time. I know that my wife, who is no longer a teacher, but a school administrator, has accumulated well over 150 sick days during her career. That means that should she decide to retire, she would continue being paid for about a half a year, while enjoying retirement. Can't think of any other industry that has perks like that. HH -

Don't know if you folks saw this or not, but http://www.torontosun.com/2015/10/27/wynne-plans-to-expand-tax-grab-despite-promise So yes Big Cliff, she is trying to destroy this province! Adding an additional 10-15K per house, that generally means added 10-15K in mortgage principal means you won't pay your house off as quick. RE the teachers... I happened to be married to a school administrator and frankly the crap I hear that goes on, at least within the TDSB is nothing short of a shame. The level of professionalism displayed within that group disgusts me. HH -
Folks, it's gonna rain tomorrow! The remnants of the hurricane that hit Mexico on the weekend are headed our way. Environment Canada is calling for 40-50mm of rain and wind gusts up to 90K. Nice fall day on Quinte, if you ask me! LOL Just thought I'd put this out there as I know that prior to this past weekend, my gutters were stuffed with leaves. With the amount of rain forecast, I would think a quick look around the house might be in order. Message complete! HH

World Health Organization announced today that eating processed meats like BACON, ham, salami etc will increase your risk of collon cancer by 18%. I wonder if this means that the demand for bacon will drop and with it, the price! LOL HH

Chow will be looking high and low for yet another elected position as she can't possibly be expected to thrive on her current government pension. The only bright side to the election results that I can see is that Chow is still un-employeed.... HH -

Harper hugged the Fords in order to try and get Ford Nation on his side. Ford Nation is the only group that could possibly put a dent in the left wing support that downtown Toronto is famous for. They have been card carrying Conservatives their entire life. HH -
It was the mid 70's and my teenage buddies and I decided to attend the London Sportsman Show. After wandering around for a while, we found out that Red Fisher was there signing autographs. We found him in a motor home in the far corner of the building. there was no line up. We made our way into the motor home, to the smell of cheap rye and b.o.. There he was, in all his glory, sitting at the table with a stack of his book of poems. He happily signed a copy for each of us. He then suggested that we hit one of the exhibitors who had a deal on a lure called a "Spinidity". He claimed it was a great lure for just about everything and that we should grab some before they were gone. Well, no fishin teenager in his right mind would not follow the advice of the great Red Fisher... I grabbed a few. They are basically a Tiny Torpedo, but a bigger version. Frog pattern. I have caught tons of fish with that lure! I still have one and it does get a fair amount of water time, given the correct circumstances. I think I paid a couple of bucks each for them. HH

Well, we are paying for the past through the debt reduction charge, but we are also paying for the green initiative and the exorbinate price tag associated with it. We are also paying other jurisdictions to take our "extra power" . How on gods green earth is it that we are paying New York State to take our power. I've said this before, but why are individual households subsidising industry's electricity costs. "On Peak" is the result of businesses using hydro to run their business. Should they then should the lion's share of the cost vs individual home owners? Does this wonderful government expect me to cook dinner on my electric stove at 9:00 at night. Should all my weekend time be devoted to laundry so I can afford the run my appliances. It's a mockery of a travisty. Did anyone else notice on the news recently that Canadians pay the highest monthly charges for cell phone? Transit costs near the top of the world as well. It's not like we get "world class" service from any of these goevernment insitutions. Somethings going to give and it aint gonna be pretty. HH

Morons throwing crap from the upper decks were just that, morons. It could have taken away the joy of the victory had any cans actually hurt anyone. Reports are that only some beer srpay on the kids, which in it's self, is not acceptable. Hopefully in the next round, folks have a little better control of their emotions. HH

I can't understand this. Uncle Katy decided that Harper wasn't taking good enough care of Canadians and specifically Ontarians, so She was going to create an Ontario Pension Plan. That was being sold as long term thinking to the betterment of Ontario's people. How can we take her at her word in the future, if she can't decide what she is going to do. She's left businesses, planning for the future, uncertain about projected costs of doing business. Business doesn't like uncertainty. She has the forethought of a shad fly. HH -
Loup won't be with the team today, he's still dealing with "personal issues". I wonder if we will see Price today, although the TV guys are saying that Texas has juggled their lineup and the two left handers are batting back to back today. HH

No, it doesn't. He is a contract employee which is essentially "term" employment. The employer will view him as potentially cutting his term short, even if he doesn't accept the other offer. They will look for another "term" employee that they feel they can rely on to fullfill the obligations of the term. An employee who puts an employer in a position of concern, is usually a soon to be ex-employee. Also, should MB2 complete the terms of his current obligation, the employer could also look to another resource, that hasn't indicated that they might not fullfill their obligation. You should really look at this only from the point of view of the employer.... what employees think has little to nothing to do with these kind of decisions. HH
-
That's career suicide! Especially if you are contract. MB2 - do what's right for the family. Money is one thing, family time is another. You will do the right thing. HH

Who is this middle class I hear them spout about?
Headhunter replied to Old Ironmaker's topic in General Discussion
I'm having some significant difficulty figuring out who I should lend my support to; I don't trust any of them to do the right thing for the people of the country. The fact that Uncle Katy is supporting Justin, just sounds like an extension of the provincial Liberals, then anything else to me. i guess that if Uncle Katy supports it, I just have to consider my position with her and look elsewhere. On topic, 90K per year is not an un-common salary for professionals in the business world; especially in the large metropolitan areas. How do you think people can afford a $900k house in the GTA? Just a dab of ketchup and that's got dinner for a couple of days covered Cliff! HH -
I have been "dealing" with those little peckers for a couple of years now. They love to peck away at the sides of my house and sharpen their beaks on my roof flashing. Tossing rocks at them only gets them to move for a bit, rattling a rock from my sling shot at foot or two away from them gets them to look elsewhere for a bit. Pretty bird, but also quite the pest!
