  1. I have had good results from Energiser batteries.
  2. X3 - I guess I need to check the board more often.
  3. I think that idea would have merit in some situations but would not have a large impact on the bass fishery. The late spring issue was discussed at the seminar. In a late spawn the young of the year bass have less chance to achieve the body mass required to make it through the winter. The feeling was that in a late spawn the year class was essentially doomed and that there was little point in delaying the open to protect them. I think that steel head would be an entirely different situation; your idea would make sense for them.
  4. Store bought fish are either commerically caught wild fish or farmed fish. I am not sure how purchasing a commercially caught wild fish from the store instead of keeping one that I caught myself is going to help the fishery. I believe that Lake Nippissing has a commercial fisher on it so the store bought fish may have come from the lake anyway. How is that a solution? Even if it is a farmed fish it has probably been fed food that is manufactured from wild caught fish. I don't see how purchasing fish from a store instead of keeping our own catch is a solution to declining wild fish stocks.
  5. I am not sure if New York allows fishing on all year on just Lake Ontario or on all lakes but I don't think it would have much impact on Lake Ontario. I attended one of the MNR seminars about the changes (which were only proposed at the time). Lake Ontario bass are actually still spawning in early July so the regulations that we had were not protecting the Lake Ontario bass during their spawn anyway. There had been some consideration to a delayed opening for the Lake Ontario itself but it was decided that was not required to maintain the health of the population.
  6. Article on the recent stocking of brown trout at the mouth of Dufin's creek. http://www.durhamregion.com/community/article/1551814--duffins-creek-in-ajax-gets-12-000-new-brown-trout
  7. The vehicle you drive makes a big difference to the rates. But don't assume the insurance rate is going to based on the price of the vehicle. The liability portion of the insurance is usually the majority of the cost of insurance. The price of your vehicle does have anything influence on liability because that is for paying for damage to other people. My wife's insurance increased by over a $1,000/year when we replaced the Aerostar with a Pontiac Wave. Insurance companies track the accident histories of different vehicles and use that information to determine rates. I assume that the Pontiac Wave (same as Chevy Aveo) is expensive because a lot of young people drive them. It definitely pays to get a quote before making the purchase. You may be able to save money be getting a nicer vehicle if that vehicle type has a low accident history. I.e. a truck or van may actually be cheaper to own that a Chevy Aveo because of better insurance rates.
  8. Are you suggesting that the government charge us an insurance premium and then make us pay for any damages ourselves??? What is the premium for then?
  9. Do you live in Ontario? I think studded tires are illegal here. A good set of 4 winter tires should help.
  10. I am a member of Metro East Anglers.
  11. When did you put the stabilizer in? My understanding is that it will not restore bad gas; it only prevents the gas from going bad. I have had engine problems due to fuel filters too. So that is another possibility.
  12. It is illegal to transport sport fish, not bait fish. Also, do not release left over bait fish into a new water body; dump your left overs on land. There may also be special regulations about transporting minnows from one zone to another.
  13. Ontario Streams is another organization that may be able to provide some information.
  14. What is your definition of native? Are book trout and lake trout not native to Ontario? If not, when were they introduced? Or, are they invaders? I think I could add muksies, walleye, arctic char, white fish, suckers, cisco, read side dace, and many, many more to the list.
  15. Introduced species may be more accurate. They were introduced into many Ontario lakes starting in the 1800's. There were very view lakes in Ontario that had bass populations prior to these stockings. The introductions happened so long ago that many assume that they were always here.
  16. The MEA is still stocking coho's. We stocked the credit a few weeks ago. Currently we only stock the credit. We need to establish a good brood stock there since there were a few years where stocking did not occur on the Canadian side at all. The CRAA may also raise some coho for stocking into the credit this year as well. There is still a possibility of stocking rivers other than the Credit; but I don't think that will happen until at least 2014. I would expect to see significantly bigger runs of coho starting next year.
  17. It is illegal to transfer fish from one body of water to another. I am not sure what the exact definition of a body of water is. In my opinion, the upstream and downstream sections of river where this is a dam with no fishway would constitute two separate bodies of water. The same logic would apply to any impassible barrier, even a natural waterfall. That is just my opinion; I am not sure what the actual law is. As already mentioned, in many cases the MNR may not want rainbow or other species above dams.
  18. I am not sure what they taste like but I believe they are actually more closely related to bass and sunfish than they are to yellow perch.
  19. MEA has process rainbows from the Milne Dam that, based on their fin clippings, were stocked by the state of Michigan... they do travel.
  20. Is there any coorelation between rain and humidity and the severity of the problem. It happens, or gets worse when it has been raining then I would suspect am issue in the ignition system.
  21. From my understanding, if the Mariner was made in the USA then it is identical to a Mercury. If it was made in Japan then it is a different motor; probably made by Yamaha but not necessarily the same as an actual Yamaha brand.
  22. If you haven't had to charge your deep cycle for two months than I don't think you need to worry about the down rigger draining the main battery while your main motor is running... I just run the down rigger off the main battery.
  23. Central Outboard Marine at Woodbine and 7 carries Mercury. I have never bought parts from him but I got a good price on a boat.
  24. Yeah, but "worked" for manufacturers means that it was removed from the shelf and carried to the cash register
  25. I have done a lot of trolling with an electric motor. But I recommend a bow mount. A transom mount will be okay when there is no wind; a bow mount will work in almost all conditions.
