  1. Even the ostrich fern contain a mild toxin that could give you a stomach ache... Which is why its recommended to steam/boil them and discard of the green water. I agree that they probably taste much better raw or blanched vs boiled
  2. Yup, Torres for Hossa is NOT a good trade. I'm a phx fan, but poop like this makes the game worse overall
  3. Great story. "Attacked by Wolves on the Nipissing" ... That must have been one heck of story and it must have given you young guys a bit of a scare! I'm going to ask my Dad about Ralph, he's a seasoned Algonquin portager and must have some accounts of Ralphs life. Btw, 1983, I was litterally still wet behind the ears...
  4. They don't need to be covered in the brown sheath. As long as the "fiddle" is tightly wrapped, they are good to go. Just pinch them lightly with your finger and thumb..if the "fiddle" is firm... it's good! I've picked them from half and inch to 1.5 feet off the ground...some of them grow incredibly tall and quick. Just remember they grow in bundles of 6 or 7 for each plant, so only pick 2 or 3 from each to ensure the plant stays alive. Use a knife, it'll cause much less bruising. Also, don't bother freezing them, I'm sure there is a way to make them taste ok, but you won't get the true charm of their flavor once they hit the freezer. Just my opinion of course.
  5. I don't know if my Mazda has the HP to even move those things haha. Pretty cool though Boivin is a good innovator to say the least
  6. Lots of time left! Looks like they are just starting... I'll be looking for them soon as well. Nip, you in?
  7. Brand new 4 door dodge ram. Less than 30 for a new one with a v8. I'm not a chrysler fan, but you cant argue with the price.
  8. Another year passes, the rainbows make full circle and return to the shallows while the North Bay boys finish up smelting season and plan for a weekend road trip to the Island. Friday's weekend whistle blows as our fueled up and loaded vehicles await impatient drivers. Nearly 3 hrs later, we arrive on the Isle and rush a populated river. The water is very low but there are signs of success everywhere. A carcass here, roe bags there, an annecdote or two from a friendly wader-dressed stranger and our moods were positive. Wishing I had bought new waders, as my delaminating rubber-pants fill with water, the first hour of fishing, aligned with the last hour of daylight, proved unsuccessful. Unphased, we switch to camping mode and access our beautiful, lodge owner-permitted, not a soul around, campsite. Up at 630, we pound back a pound of back (bacon) with taters and eggs that apparently run-free. Don't ask me how an egg can run... Our initial location once again proves fishless for everyone in sight and so we drive to plan B, which produced for us last year. As we pull in to plan B with the vehicles, I can see my brother has his truck door partially opened and ready to pounce on that "first cast". "Not gonna happen" I say as I stomp the e-brake and bowl out of the drivers seat. I grab my rod, pre-loaded with a Mepps Aglia Longcast (rainbow pattern) and trip over myself trying to hold the lead ahead of my brother. Slippery and unbalanced rocks are no match for this steady mountain goat as I successfully take the virgin, prime location at the tip of a rock wall. First cast, nothin'. Second cast, SLAM! Fish on! After a great fight I pull in a 4lbs rainbow. My brother, as excited as I, takes his first cast and gets a bite but loses the fish. Three casts later he hooks into a second fish and lands it! Another 4lber! Mr. Joey Tier (Tiger) who has a much cooler head about fishing and doesn't seem to like first cast races, eventually joins the crew and he quickly lands into a 4.5lber. My dad ends up landing the biggest fish at 6lbs! We got at least 10 bites from this spot and the fish eventually moved on...as did we. We toured the island, had dinner, tried a few other piers but the fishing really slowed down. At this point we considered the trip a success, completed the evening fish, then travelled back home. Joey stayed the night, since he had a much longer drive home. Here he is with his dinner on the tailgate of his accomodations. We usually only fish for rainbows once a year, so this trip is always a treat for us! We also keep every fish we can up to our limit because we know that's all we get. This year I took 2 home, much bigger than last year's 3. Tonight I cooked up some Gravlax, thanks to Bluegills post a couple months ago. I'm really looking forward to trying this for the first time! See you next year, Manitoulin.
  9. Strong winds here. Gusts past 50kph. The clouds look funny too... not normal. Since others mentioned dinner.... I'm cooking up some Ling tonight and making some Gravlax as Bluegill posted a while back.
  10. Quite the catch... glad to see it out of the system
  11. Lots of good smallmouth fishing near the kiosk entrance, but its even better from the Brent entrance. We've noticed our trout numbers down and big bass numbers way up in last 10 years.
  12. Dam mit I missed all that... Too tired to stay up. I was around for the last three seconds o the third. Just enough to go to bed angry. Smith looked pissed after that goal too. Was the "head" shot before or after the end of the third?
  13. nuts to the derby! Looks like some great family time!
  14. Hey Bruce, what are those smaller minnows amonst the smelt? Babies or shiners?
  15. The airport must be thankful for this. " what do you mean we were polluting, you don't even have minimum standards/criteria for PFOS". Time to change the regs again. If they find elevated levels of PFOS in groundwater or sensitive surface waters, they'll have a better chance at enforcing a clean-up. Either way, a clean-up will probably have to be voluntary at this point, it's pretty difficult to prove fault 30 from years past.
  16. I don't have a fb account, does this mean I'm safe from this horrbile disease? Should I avoid Tim Horton drivethrus and Guido based reality shows as well?
  17. He's right. I have a gas card that is a taxable benefit. Every penny that was charged on my gas card was claimed as a tax deduction. Think of it this way: They consider the gas money as salary, but they force you to use it for business... Hence, business write off. Now go enjoy your extra 1500-2500 tax return.
  18. Good fish! I just came back from a failed Laker trip... But then again I'm like the town idiot when it comes laker fishing. Seems like this is one species of fish where I'm much better off with a sonar.
  19. Sweet! I always enjoy smelting. Its more of a tradition for me than some other "traditional" occasions. Enjoy the feed and the mess
  20. That big one buddy got was just silly... It was like netting a whitefish! Easily 10 inches long. I just bagged mine whole... I'll see how that works. I have lots of snacks and a few bags of pike bait! Good times.
  21. Took a dump by the owners propane tank?? Jeez that's just brutal. They need to be reminded of private property laws and fishing regs and ethical behavior. Theyll get their come-up-ance in the end, at least I hope they do.
  22. That's a good one, phil. The gf gigled at it!
