  1. Something about Halloween that brings the worst out in me. Happy Halloween to all the kiddies or adults that just love sweets!
  2. I don't like putting in regulations or laws that are based on the few (abusers/poachers), rather than the many. Enforcement with heavy consequences is the answer. Unfortunately, no kill is playng into the hands of you know who.
  3. It was tough to leave for work this morning with her dressed like cleopatra and heading in the opposite direction! LOL
  4. That must have been a sinking feeling!
  5. That was my favourite lure as a kid, then they started making them in a plastic model.
  6. It's finding the location that will offer you what Nipissing does in regards to accommodations and huts. There are some resorts in the Minden area that have rooms/cottages and a short walk to your hut. There are slots on Lakers and you can only use one rod through the ice on those lakes though. Lake Bernard south of Nipissing is said to be okay, don't know if there are packages offered on that lake though.
  7. Looks like a great lakes strain.
  8. Roy, I think many locals are jaded when it comes to this topic. I have seen so much discussion about the walleye situation over the past 25 years, that I think people don't have faith that any input will be taken seriously. Over the years, I have volunteered my time to count spawning fish and rehabilitate spawning areas on the lake that I live on (when there was an active club), but have only seen the population decline. It took too long for slots and reduced limits to be implemented, the Trent doesn't manage water levels properly during the spawn, the MNR always brushed aside wishes for a stocking program and the present regs are not being enforced to the level they need to be; and those are just some of the things that can be controlled. I did not attend, because of not wanting to hear the rhetoric that tends to go along with these discussions. I know that many involved with the FMZ17 are dedicated and commited anglers (I commend them for their desire to make a difference), but I have just seen too much talk and no action in the past. However, I do hope that many attended and that there was good discussion that will result in some benefit to the walleye. I'm sure many would get involved if some results were being realized. I know this sounds negative to some degree, but it's where my kawartha mind is at with the state of the walleye population in the kawarthas. It also doesn't answer your question, sorry Roy!
  9. He is probably fishing in one of your dream locations, while you are wondering where he is! LOL
  10. Nice fish, this is the time of the year that you can get some real pigs if you're willing to battle the elements!
  11. That Quinte can be a real head scratcher at times! Sounds like you will be back at it soon enough!
  12. Sorry Misfish, I was typing while you were posting. My post wasn't to comment on yours.
  13. Those regulations have been around for ever. That second hand store wasn't supposed to sell them. However, I have to argue that selling old mounts such as fish and moose heads should be an area that is specified in regs to avoid charges. It's not like they are setting up a black market and killing all kinds of wildlife just to mount and sell. I would rather see CO's on the lakes and rivers also.
  14. You can purchase a deer cape or hide from outside of Ontario and then pay to get it mounted. You cannot sell any gamefish or part of one in Ontario. Guys have tried to pass off selling them as a piece of fancy driftwood art and throwing in the fish for free. Doesn't cut it! Go with a replica if you are looking for a fish.
  15. Dust off fish with a paint brush and them use a damp cloth to get the harder stuff off. I wouldn't spray any type of cleaner on them, it might react to the paint. The yellowing might be another issue. That might be right in the paint and you can't do anything about that. When I was running my taxidermy business, I might have re-painted the fish if the yellowing was severe. If the fish looks dull, sometimes a new coat of gloss will make then look almost new. The best thing to do is to clean them monthly.
  16. I remember getting a call from a woman once for a price on having her Rotty mounted. I gave her a price, but could hear her jaw hit the floor; she then asked how much for just the head. I asked her where she had the animal stored. She replied that it was still alive. Yikes. I then recommended that she hire a great photo person to take some great portraits off her and her pet together rather than have the dog mounted. Never heard from her again and I hope she followed my advice.
  17. I know Gary, I was a fellow member of the Canadian Taxidermy Association with him way back. A geat taxidermist and great guy.
  18. Some of those look pretty old, but yes hilarious. The taxidermy field has come a long way since some of those were done. Love the nose on the cougar!
  19. Surface temp in Gannons Narrows was 54 on Tuesday, but has probably dropped again since then. Weeds are still very much alive. Have seen some muskie at all depths over the past 2 weeks. Don't ever try to figure them out, just go out there and pound the water.
  20. Haven't been to a river in years just for the reasons stated. Won't go either, because others will laugh at my relic equipment now. I did enjoy watching a shoreline/bank scuffle the odd time as long as no one got hurt. LOL
  21. Thanks for the input so far! Jim
  22. Let me know if you locate any good places in Ontario and I will do the same for you as we search through the options. We have started to discuss Quebec, because of our inability to find a place that suits are needs. Don't get me wrong, Nipissing is loaded with great places, we just haven't had much luck in the last few years. We always did well prior to that.
  23. I mentioned in another post that our group is looking for a new ice fishing location other than Nipissing. Just wondering if anyone has done an ice fishing trip to the west side of Quebec in the winter? Any recommendations? What was the fishing like? We tend to like the cottage setup with a hut included for day use. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks
  24. Our group is facing the same dilemna. Probably many other groups as well. LOL Everyone wants those walleye, but there just aren't enough choices. We did go to Nosbonsing one year. I won't mention the place, it was terrible. We did catch the odd pike and small walleye. I caught the two best walleye when everyone else packed up and we were about to leave. The weather will play a role in our decision. The last thing we want to do is book off time and plan a Quinte trip, only to find the conditions are unsafe. So really, the choices are Nipissing, Temagami or Nosbonsing for ice bungalows or cottage/hut rentals. Bark Lake in Barry's Bay could be an option, but again the weather conditions play a huge role in that deep lake's freeze up. Not sure about the walleye fishing in the winter though, probably more trout and whitefish. Good luck in your search; I have been looking for other options for years. I did call that place on Oak Lake, but no body ever returns the call when I left a message.
