  1. That area will never get my business! So this is what we pay law enforcement officers to do? Maybe they should deal with some real crime!
  2. I'll definitely go with Stoty on this one. Smallies. I have caught many smallies in the smaller lakes in up to 50 fow. Try drop shotting with an extremely slow presentation the next time you are there.
  3. LOL You usually don't see them when you're trolling for muskies! I see them in the shallows all the time, but haven't really targeted them in years. Just remember catching them on the muddy areas with a hook and worm near the end of the day. Maybe the muskie have eaten them all!
  4. I have found all fishing to be tough lately. The bass are fat as heck, so they are feeding at some point during the day/night. Just keep checking your usual spots and hope to be there when the bite turns on. Catfish are still in there, I see some swimming around in the spring. Live worms on the muddy bottom near a weedline is where I would target those cats.
  5. I can't even stand listening to all the media reports on the so called CBA negotiations. They're all full of it or themselves. Was always my favourite sport to watch, but it looks like it will be the american hoggers this winter! LOL
  6. Try coating with hot pepper jelly if doing it on a cedar plank.
  7. Shut down December 15th in the kawarthas, then start back up December 16th in any lake that is open. I used to do the hunting thing but found I would rather take the time off to go fishing. There are even less anglers on the water then, with many of them hunting.
  8. Agree about the enforcement issue and many anglers continue to do it. However, I don't mind keeping some in the freezer for the shoulder seasons, when my luck isn't as good.
  9. Sweet! Always nice to get into the smallies no matter what size they are.
  10. I had to move once as some bozo thought it was ok to slowly make his way over within 30 feet of my bow when we were the only 2 boats on the lake (I don’t get that at all ) , but the magic number seemed to be 30'FOW and I soon found another spot and had a fish on again. I'll never understand this either. Thanks for sharing the video, it was a nice way to end the week!
  11. I always fished as often as I could, but moved to a lake 26 years ago so I could fish everyday if I wanted to. Seem to do more in the spring and July, then slow down a little for August and into the fall, but still get out a couple times a week. It is definitely more exciting to change up species throughout the year.
  12. Did you check the compression? It should be fixable if you have good compression. I just bought parts for a 65 evinrude and had no problem finding them, so they should be out there somewhere. Call Robinson Marine 705-324-1843 in Lindsay, they might be able to help you with parts if needed. Your problem could be loose fuel connections, poor spark, dirty carb, bad coils etc. Don't give up if it's been a good motor for you.
  13. That's our favourite saying when we do our annual ice fishing trip.
  14. It happens all the time! I know the feeling. Better luck next time.
  15. Panfish populations can definitely be hurt by over harvesting. I have seen it happen over the years. I'm sure that's why there are limits on panfish in certain areas. There are anglers out there that don't fish within the law and feel that the resource is endless (similar to the cod fishery that was mentioned earlier), but I doubt education will change anything. They will just move to a different lake when their success dwindles. One thing that I learned over my years, is that nothing will ever stay the same. Some of the phrases I have heard over the years: We always limit out when we go walleye fishing in the kawarthas. You'll never fish the crappie or bluegill out of the lake, they're endless. Go perch fishing in Lake Simcoe, you can fill your trunk. If I don't keep it, someone else will. Sad
  16. I usually wait until all the chlorine has evaporated and put it on the lawn. Why can't you put it into a septic system? It's just water that would filter through your weeping tiles. Now if you only have a holding tank, I can see a problem. Some places on Sturgeon are in that situation.
  17. I don't feel rich! Welcome aboard Frodo.
  18. We have a 12' x 24' above ground pool. We have the pump/filter on a timer that will run about 4 hours a day on the off peak hydro times. We don't bother with a heater, but there are a variety of options. Add Chlorine once a week, along with pucks and that's it. Once in a while we have to add some pool clear if it starts getting cloudy. It can be vacuumed once a week, which takes about 15 minutes. Drain pool down in the fall leaving 18" of water and put winter cover on it. Fill in spring with lake water and shock it to clear it up, add chlorine and it's ready to go in a day or two. Of course there might be the odd issue or repair over the years, but that goes with anything including a new cottage (to you) that is worth over $700,000. Pools are like anything else, once you get to know it, it is fairly easy to maintain. You can always have a neighbour help out with exchange for use when you're not there.
  19. Good job man!
  20. Have you priced cottages going north from where you live? I was just up at a beautiful lake, east of Parry Sound. There were a couple of cottages for sale and both were over $700,000. Yikes! I live on Pigeon with your same predicament and have considered moving, but the prices are just crazy. I chose the pool route. Water levels have also been mentioned here, which you should be aware of in the Haliburton area. The larger lakes in the Bancroft area are beautiful, but the walleye fishing lacks. Great bass fishing though and some decent pike fishing. There are other smaller bodies of water that offer some walleye action though. Never an easy decision!
  21. So many amazing stories by everyone! 1) Sitting quietly while bow hunting, heard a rustle close by, turned to look and it was a coyote/bush wolf sitting about 10 feet away looking at me. Next think you know he was howling at me and I broke out laughing. 2) Just this spring while lake trout fishing there was a family of mergansers swimming across the lake when there was a splash, my buddy said "did you see that?" He thought a fish had grab one of the chicks, but then it happened again and we realized it was loons attacking them from underneath. The loons didn't let up until the chicks were nowhere to be seen. 3)I live on the lake and like most we have a goose problem. Coming in from fishing the other day there was a bunch of them relaxing on the neighbours lawn. I took a second look and there was a fox walking around between them all like they were a big happy family. I was hoping that fox liked eating goose! :-) 4)Watched a small hawk from my pool pluck every feather out of his dinner and then feast. He didn't care that I was watching.
  22. I hate sitting at my desk and reading your reports John! Looks like an awesome vacation.

    Bears

The cancellation of the spring bear hunt was definitely an ethical decision with no biological reasons. The whole effort to cancel was supported by big city dollars.

Was the bear's name Ted? Maybe you could have offered him a beer!
