  1. 10.6 Foot Mercury fibreglass bottom RIB with 8 hp Yamaha. With me solo and my fishing gear, 17mph flat out. It goes about 38 mph when attached to the back of the Sea Ray mother ship, burning about 50 gallons (180 litres) per hour at WOT.
  2. Lots of radio ads about the same thing. There is a web site as well. Wtf2015.com.
  3. Pure bred dogs are the ones with the most defects because of inbreeding. Shepherds have many issues because of that. Dobermans are the same. Top ten dog intelligence list: 1. Border Collie 2. Poodle 3. German Shepherd 4. Golden Retriever 5. Doberman Pinscher 6. Shetland Sheepdog 7. Labrador Retriever 8. Papillon 9. Rottweiller 10. Australian Cattle Dog So the "designer" breeders tried to come up with crosses that blended the best of many characteristics. Poodles bring in the non-shedding aspect, and then they just crossed to the other breeds to bring in a bit of the best from other breeds. Golden Retriever and Lab crosses with poodles are popular because they make great house pets. Not the best bush dogs because of the curly fur that picks up burrs, but great family pets. We spend a lot of time at dog parks with our Golden Doodle and see a lot of breeds. Lots of pros and cons to any breed. But if you want a smart, althletic, family pet that does not shed hair all over things, you can't g wrong with a lab/poodle or golden/poodle mix. I personally think the golden retriever crosses are a little more sedate compared to the lab crosses, but both have a nice balance of energy.
  4. We have a golden doodle. Golden Retriever Poole cross.. Similar to a labradoodle. Great dog. Great disposition. high energy at times, but also is chilled out. Not aggressive at all. Great with kids. Even very little kids. Dog will sleep in till 10AM or be up at 5:30. He's good with either. Very intelligent. They do shed, but the fur is more soft and curly so nothing like a lab or shepherd.
  5. If there is a kid in the boat, there is no way they should have behaved the way they did. No class at all. I think some people get really aggressive when a child is around because they know that the odds are that the adult will hold back. Its kind of like the internet. I think there are a lot of tough guys out there hding behing a keyboard (or behind a parent's kid). Take the high road and use it as a learning opportunity for the kid to let hem know that hose kind of people are out there. That said, I would leave any marker out there, especially if its on a shoal. Those things are used to mark structure for future refence so they are ALWAYS left when the boat is not around.
  6. I guess it must have been better a few years ago. I had a couple parts break on my Sealine level wind and emailed Diawa. About a week later an envelope arrived in the mail with the parts. No invoice just a packing slip. No duty because the packing slip said warranty replacement parts.
  7. I have boated all over the 30,000 islands. Around Parry Sound is beautiful but I think north of honey harbour has a lot of similar scenery once you get away from the main boating routes which can be crazy with big boat traffic that can rock you around in a small boat. If you are looking for a cool area you could try the moon river and Massassauga Park area. Then a cool experience is lunch at Henry's on Sans Souci island. Not sure where to launch but I think there is a ramp at Moose Deer marina on twelve mile bay which is a bit south of San Souci. But for ease of access I would say honey harbour. The south end area is like Muskoka and once you get north of beausoleil island the shoreline starts to get more classic Georgian Bay rock and pines. Either way you need charts and better yet a gps chart plotter. Lots of rocks to hit and the channels are not always clear.
  8. I have Navionics on my iPAD and iPhone and I take them on the boat all the time. I even took the iPAD out on a boat rental in Florida running in Pine Island sound. I probably should get a waterproof case for the iPAD though. Bouncing around in FLA I was a bit nervous about it. I have a basic kind of flimsy mount for the iPAD. A RAM mount would be better. Pros: you can plan out trips on shore and bring it with you on the water. You can mark waypoints and look at them at home to see what similarities there are and pick you next spots for the next trip. It works well for tracking routes and where you are.Screen refresh is fast, better than my Raymarine chart plotter from a few years ago. Simple to use. Cons: Screen on iPAD is not bright enough for bright sunlight. OK if you have a bimini though. For Florida I made a temporary sun shield with some cardboard because the bimini did not shade enough. It worked OK. Need to have power source on (uses lots of battery power on full bright and with GPS running) Not waterproof. Bottom line is its a great addition to a chartplotter, but I don't think I would want it as my only navigation device.
  9. I would highly doubt you would ever be able to see fish on plane. If you think about it, at 2 or 3 mph a fish is a short arc. At speed the arc would be so short it would look just like a dot, just like all the other screen clutter you see at speed. I think that the ocean fish boats can see big fish, but I doubt any setup here would give you enough information to confidently be able to find fish at speed.
  10. I used to fish near Kirkland Lake and the mosquittos and blackflies were insane in the spring Muskol liquid was all that worked other than netting. The problem was the Muskol dissolved plastic so if you got it on anything it would ruin it. At our place in Tiny on the beach we get zero blackflies and very few mossies which is great.
  11. I fished on just like that for the first 25 years of my fishing life. You want a 9.9. I think they are rated up to 10hp. I tried a friends 15 but it was way to squirrelly at speed. It's too short and their flat deadrise makes th fast.
  12. Congrats. I helped my parents buy a Sorento. Bottom end V6AWD version. Its been great and I love driving it when I get the chance. I have a BMW X5 and have had it since new. My X5 handels nicely if you run it like a its a sports car. But in nornal driving, that Sorento drives every bit as nicely and has just as much power as the X5, and their repair experience has ben WAY better than mine. A brake light switch and the one other minor thing I can't recall. I am spending about $4K per year on repairs on my X5 every year since the warrranty expired. On the Sorento I do find the throtttle a bit touchy. There was a TSB that the dealer did to lessen the throttle response a bit, but its still a bit quick. You get used to it, but its still a bit quick for my liking.
  13. If they are a pair you use together and they are not very close in capacity, rating etc or if one is OK and the other weak, the bad one will cause the good one to quickly go bad. Its always best to replace them as a pair. They will last longer. As others have said, a smart charger that desulfates or a battery shop with a commerical charger can revive some batteries to some percentage of new capacity, but they wont be anywhere near 100% and should only be used solo, if at all.
  14. I second trying Sayal Electronics. They have the heat shrink connectors and the tinned copper marine wire but not at all locations. THe one in Burlington used to have it. Another place you can get it reasonably priced is at a marina with a service department. They have it in bulk and will sell you what you need. Another tip is to buy a cheap labeler like a Dymo. Then get the outdoor grade label material and label your wires at each end. It will look professional and will save you time if you are not colour coding each wire separately.
  15. Total thread highjack now, but i did a Spanish Mackerel and Sea Trout charter in Tampa Bay . Non stop action every cast it was crazy
  16. i have four Mustang manual inflates on my boat (worn while underway) plus regular ones readily accessible one for each person. I forget i have it on. i also have a couple spare re-arm kits on board in case i have to reset them for some reason.
  17. The best waterproofer is 303 Fabric Protectant, but its pricy. The next best is Starbrite Waterproofing PTFE (I buy it in the gallon jugs). You should wash the cover before you waterproof it. You can machine wash it, but you should rinse it twice since hte detergent will prevent the waterproofing from working as well. Once its dry I use a deck sprayer to spray my canvas then let it dry well.
  18. Nothing sticks to Starbord. Its polyethylene similiar to plastic kitchen cutting boards. You won't be able to glue carpet to it. Its very slippery when wet so you cant use it without carpet. its good for cabinets and doors, but not for decks. You would be better off making the deck out of exterior grade G1S plywod and putting a skin of fibreglass over all surfaces to keep the water out. Then glue carpet on the glass. Keep the water out of the wood and it will last a long time.
  19. Drifter is bang-on. Its dehydration. You need to bring and drink lots of fluids. A couple bottles of Gator-aid help a lot (buy the powder and mix it yourself). I think you will also feel less "bagged" after a day on the water if you keep the fluids going in.
  20. Don"t forget only one rod per angler in Georgian Bay.
  21. Southern Georgian Bay this weekend and part of next week. Hope to get a few salmon.
  22. I want to counter that Scotty story with one of my own. I have three of the Scotty Depthmaster manual riggers. Have had them for about 10 years. Over the years I have had the screws that hold the arm into the base fall out , so finally replaced the nuts with nyloc and they stay put now. I have snapped off the depth counter a couple times doing stupid things. Since they are plastic they will sometimes break if they get whacked. Both times they directed me to a local warranty approved shop and the parts were given to me no charge and no questions asked. Same thing for when I broke the pins taking one apart to free a cable tangle under the spool. I was using pliers instead of a wrench. My mistake - free replacement. Now I did not ask for free shipping, I went to their recommended shop. But after that, I have nothing but good things to say about Scotty's after sales service. And when I upgrade to electrics, they will be Scotty's. (if there are ever enough salmon in Georgian Bay to make it worth the $$)
  23. I get ragweed allergy bad. So bad my skin gets itchy, want to claw my eyes out and get stuffed up so I cant breath right. I suffered for years until I finally tried my current routine. Here is my routine: I take Aerius allergy pills once a day starting in early august till first frost.i tried the others, but I find Aerius works for me. I use Cromolyn eye drops. You have to put them in several times a day and it takes a week or so before you notice a change. And the most important thing is to get a prescription for steroid nasal spray like Flonase (Fluticasone). That stuff works wonderfully. I think it even helps with the symptoms other than the nose.. With all three, I am pretty much clear. I still can feel it a bit after golfing, but totally liveable. My sister tried getting the shots, but they did not work at all. I know a lot of people think that the issue is all of the chemicals in our lives. That may be why our immune systems got so wacky, but once an immune system is set up, I don't think you can change the process by avoiding the chemicals. For those of you that are trying, more power to you. Life is too short for me to be miserable two months out of every year.
