  1. Well, that's encouraging. Over the past week or so, I've made two cracks at the all-mighty carp to no avail, but I am learning a lot each time. Lots of reading in the past week, and I think I may have mastered the bolt rig as of about an hour ago! The world of bait preparation is pretty intimidating, but I'm not worried about that stuff too much yet. Keep us posted! I'd love to hit up a few Kawartha holes I know of that would be just brimming with carp right now.
  2. Good goin', Mike. I've had far more luck so far with subsurface flies this season, but when the water rises I definitely turn to the spinners. I've done well with the speckles, but I haven't quite dialed in the brownies yet...WOW
  3. I use a 9' 6 wt for resident brookies and browns in your neck of the woods. Sometimes it's a little much, but most of the time it's just right. Small bead nymphs under an indicator are usually the best bet, but when a big hatch hits and you start to see them busting on the surface, tie on a dry and hang on.
  4. I saw it today, and pretty much always see it in the spring on various lakes. I can remember a few trips to simcoe in particular where hundreds of dead perch lined the shallows. Never did figure out why
  5. Clearly there are more factors at play. I have fished many lakes in northeastern Ontario that have been stocked quite heavily (relative to their size) with brook trout and have almost always blanked in both spring and winter. Even though these lakes are drive-to, they really don't receive much pressure at all (certainly not enough to drain a lake in one year). Most of these lakes are deep, clear oligotrophic lakes without much winterkill. I'm not sure what the issue is, but I don't think I'm that inept at catching brookies.
  6. Same story here. Managed two (18 and 24 inches) in about 7 hours fishing, and everyone I talked to at the Belleville launched blanked. Both fish came out of new cabbage beds in 8 to 10 FOW jigging paddle tail grubs. Things will only get better in the next couple weeks.
  7. MCA! Own a couple Beastie LPs and love everything they've done. Fantastic musician he was. Gonna have to put some beasties on the turntable tonight in tribute. RIP
  8. Yeah, but so is this... <object width="420" height="315"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ZSlrrQaMTQ?version=3&hl=en_US"></param><param'>http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ZSlrrQaMTQ?version=3&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ZSlrrQaMTQ?version=3&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="420" height="315" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object>
  9. The Hulk and both Iron Man films are absolute garbage in my opinion, but the general consensus is that this one blows them out of the water.
  10. If either of those things were relevant to the quality of their music, you might have had a point. <object width="420" height="315"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GzQT1Rco9tk?version=3&hl=en_US"></param><param'>http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GzQT1Rco9tk?version=3&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GzQT1Rco9tk?version=3&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="420" height="315" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object>
  11. haha. Isn't that the bridge just down the hill from your place? Sweet!
  12. Cool! I have never heard of a sea trout. are they genetically similar to an atlantic? they sure are similar in appearance.
  13. Awesome ink! Huge Maiden fan here. Own most of their discography and have seen them twice now. Their live show cannot be beat.
  14. Excellent stuff. A story of a lifetime for some, but I'm sure you could rhyme off a bunch more tales just as exciting. Amazing narration to boot.
  15. I'll be on the bay, but much farther east, hopefully away from much of derby crowd. Good luck, guys! Would be cool to see an OFC member grab the title.
  16. Now that looks like a helluva lotta fun! Gorgeous fly rod as well.
  17. Giddy up! I spent a day or two on Restoule last May long and you betcha there was blackflies
  18. Bush Beans! My favourite on-ice snack.
  19. All wild fish, which means you almost always have to bushwhack your way through some nasty stuff to find them. Keeps the people away... Had a nice little morning again, hooking about a dozen specks. Nothing over 10-11 inches but super fun on a 5 wt! Even caught a couple Atlantic smolts...these fish were caught above a very well-established beaver dam that has been there for years and likely isn't going anywhere anytime soon. I doubt very much they were stocked where I was fishing too.
  20. Before you put it to use, let out the entire spool and reel it in nice and tight. Don't put steel right to the spool. Dacron backing is the way to go.
  21. Shoulda named him stinger...
  22. Mine was filled with a few dozen of these guys... All fish were taken on either bead head nymphs under an indicator, plus a few on dries once things heated up and a good hatch got going. Could not even get one to think about hitting a spinner or even a chunk of worm. Good thing they're way more fun on the fly
  23. 15 3/4 "!!!!! That's just unreal. Good eats!
  24. Didn't know the Don river crossed Bathurst...
