A friend of mine came up with this great idea to go backcountry camping. He suggested we check out algonquin. We are pretty new to backcountry camping so looking for some suggestions on potential campsites that are on good fishing lakes. Would love to get into some splake and/or brook trout. We are planning for mid July and will be canoeing in. I tried using the parks ontario website to see availability and for some reason it gives you the checkin date option but doesnt give you a check out date, so it only counts as one night. Is this normal or is it best to call them and book? Kawarthas is an option as well, so feel free to recommend sites or lakes in Kawarthas. Thanks

Haven't caught much trout, but I think small pink worms are the best.

curious for those who have gone to tim hales, are you able to see the fish through the hole while fishing? I have fished cooks bay with one of the hut operators and I thing its 12-15 feet so you can easily see the fish. -
Is your foot really that blue from the injury or is the camera playing games? Wow never seen something like that. Hope that heals soon!

Actually my work booked the place for a workplace retreat due to connections with the cottage owners. Fishing the lake will be my past time while there. The problem with fishing other lakes in the area is that the cottage is a good kilometre from the entrance off the main road and the road is pretty rough. Luckily I have a SUV so it doesn't get beat up so bad, but I avoid using the road except to get in on checkin day and to get out on checkout day. I have been there before but never fished and all I heard from the people who have been there is that they have caught A big fish. How big, and what type of fish is unknown

Thanks for the info. Unfortunately the boat can't move from the lake. I was told the lake is 200 feet deep by the cottage owner where I am staying but I suspected that wasn't true given the small size of the lake. I will try to get lucky with anything that swims hopefully when there in summer.

Looking for some information on Cashel Lake in Bancroft area. Will be spending a weekend there this summer and will have access hopefully to a pontoon boat for fishing. I have been there before but didnt really fish but have heard the lake is quite deep and there may be some big fish there. Thanks

Check out Bonnechere Provincial Park. Never been there but has great reviews and seems like decent riverfront sites.

Usual camping trips to Pinery, Point Farms. Looking for a recommendations on a third provincial park i should try for this year within 2-3 hours of GTA.

Awenda is nice depending on which campground you stay at. Wolf is good. Also Beach 4 is worth the extra walk.

I agree. did the trip a few years ago in less than a week and it was as good as driving there and back. I plan to do it again sometime in the near future for minimum 2 week trip. beautiful and peaceful.

Btw Im renting from a hut operater so If they say its not safe, why would I drive the hour to get to get to Simcoe? Thanks -

That's where Im going in less than a week. How thick was the ice? How do the operators get their guys to the huts? Or is it walk to your own hut type of arrangement lol. -
I would get a durable instant tent like a coleman and just tie the smaller boat on top. Would be best for mobility and being lightweight and all it will cost you is $200 bucks max for the tent!

So when we rent huts on Simcoe, they use propane stove as heater. Is this safe? The only time we went, we had it on the whole time . Now it has me thinking.

I booked a hut for Feb 5th out of gilford. Hopefully its still safe out there and will be when I go

84.9 in mississauga. Nice to be filling up for less a buck for premium fuel!

Glad you are safe! Hope that was the worst of it and there is no need to go to the hospital except for the great news of the baby!

How thick does the ice have to be for them to put out huts? I'm guessing 6 inches?
