Hey guys....seeing a few people getting their worm harnesses ready, and it got me thinking that I should try these out this year. (I've always been a minnowbait kind of guy when it comes to walleye) I'll be up in Temagami for walleye opener on the long weekend, and always thought that minnows were the bait of choice in the Spring, while worms and leeches are more effective in the summer. Should I be packing some worms and harnesses this early?

Gravenhurst Gull lake and Silver Lake ANY TIPS
johnnyb replied to CanadianShark's topic in General Discussion
I believe he's referring to the Silver lake that connects from Gull Lake by Gravenhurst. Welcome aboard, Canadian Shark.....you may get a bit more feedback if you share what species/time of year you plan on going. -
Great when you get sunburned on a "rainy" day !

Very nice....was a windy day indeed....sounds like you had a blast! -
Fantastic....the animals must really love you...the cat follows you around...the deer clear out a spot for you to fish...LOL Love the shots of the evening walk....nice fish to start the softwater season with too!

Not only has it been in there for years....but there's so much other stuff it hasn't been visible until now! You need to learn the term "hoarder" as well as "denial"

LOL @ pike/perchslayer Manitou....if the sucker option is an easy one, that'd be the #1 choice. If that's too much hassle, then my #2 choice would be a super slow moving jerkbait. Hard bait or soft plastic...either way...sinking/suspending is key....just twitch it in place and leave it there....and tell the wife to grab you a new pair of polarized lenses!!!

Good stuff Bob....do you pay much attention to the St. Clair river? I'm thinking it should be time to head down there and start tossing grubs from shore in the evening....?
-
I never had the whole kit....but had a 5 or 6-pack....looking at the minnows themselves...they should work as a swimbait...action is decent...but can't say I've ever used the ones I have

I'm wondering when they're going to change the river to it's proper name....the Walleye River....

Awesome stuff there....priceless considering the history and memories they come with

Why not try hitting up Rosseau or Joe? Lots of shoreline to troll, lots of trout in there, lots of space between boats this time of year....

. Sorry....thought I knew of an OFC'er out that way....but had the wrong guy.

Wow. I'm pretty much sitting at 227....and I know I need to get under 200. Thanks for the motivation!

Roy -- thanks for pointing out my misuse of the word "unless"...or was it "not"? Depends on what your definition of "is" is...suckers! Garry, you used to be 100% right....now, thanks to a new exception, you are only mostly right I just cut and pasted this from pg.9 (coloured font added by me). Basically, unless you have a livewell, you have to stay one fish shy of your limit if you plan to cull. However, if you do have a livewell....you can limit out, then keep fishing, and should you catch a fish that you want to trade out for one you already have....you're good to go. Anglers fishing from a boat may now catch, hold, and selectively live release more walleye, northern pike, largemouth or smallmouth bass than the daily limit, provided: (a) the fish are held in a livewell with a mechanical aerator operating at all times, (see Anglers Guide, page 8, for livewell requirements) (b ) the fish comply with any applicable size limits, ( c ) the Sport or Conservation Fishing Licence daily catch and retain limits for walleye or northern pike are not exceeded at any one time, (d) no more than six largemouth or smallmouth bass (or any combination) caught under a Sport Fishing Licence are retained at any one time, and (e) the Conservation Fishing Licence catch and retain limits for largemouth and smallmouth bass (or any combination) are not exceeded at any one time. Anglers are reminded to closely monitor the condition of fish held in a livewell. Only fish that are in such a condition that they will survive may be released (see Tips on Live Release of Fish, page 10). Releasing a fish that will not survive and allowing the flesh of that fish to be wasted is an offence. Any fish not live-released are part of your daily catch and retain limit.

Hey Joshua...do a bit of driving and cast from shore around Rosseau and Joseph. Lake trout is open right now, and the big lakes are free of ice....pretend you're at the whirlpool and chuck those spoons Closer to Huntsville you also have Mary and Vernon lakes with Lakers in them...not sure what kind of shore access you can get there....but it could be worth a shot.

BillM is correct --- The regs clearly state that unless a fish is immediately released it does not count toward your limit. So if you have your limit (be it 3 on Balsam, or 4 on another lake in Zone17), you may continue to fish so long as you are letting the fish go immediately. If you catch a fish after reaching the daily catch or possession limit for that species, the fish must be released immediately back to the water (see Ontario's Catch and Retain Rules, on page 9). If the limit is zero, anglers may practise catch and release only, and any fish caught must be released immediately back into the water in a manner that does not harm the fish. For some species there are no limits and no reference will be made to a limit in this summary (see Size Limits, page 8). That was pasted from HERE

I just realized this morning that the post referred to JohnF. He really contributed to this board in a great way....I had always hoped I'd get a chance to meet him. My condolences to his family.

In the industrial areas around here, I see some places actually put their scrap wood from packaging crates/damaged skids in containers beside the road with a sign saying it's free for the taking.

Darryl Chronzey did a show that covered exactly that -- went with an outfit called Grindstone Outfitters.....I believe they put in at Walkerton and drifted for a few miles...lots of good smallie action. That is the extent of my knowledge on the topic Hope it helps
