  1. A few years back i tried brining a few dozen larger emerald shiners with Fire Brine (seen it as SAIL recently I think) and they worked great. They stored well in a ziploc bag in a cooler and kept them in the fridge all week. They were tougher and stayed on the hook I bought 4-5 doz shiners and let them dry out with some pickling salt in the fridge. Then coaked them in fire brine overnight. I bought the brite yellow liquid and the minnows will take on that color. Lots of home made recipes from the salmon guys out west for brining cut herring. Have seen minnows done with laundry bluing too and these stay really shiny
  2. Kessel goes to Pittsburg and finally gets a real center to play with
  3. Just drove through downpour from Aurora right through to Oakville. Got all four games in for first round of ontario 16u baseball playoffs and they cancelled the rest of the weekend totally. Supposed to be non stop down here until tomorrow afternoon.
  4. Here's a couple to check. It would all depend on timing coming through Ontario. I'll assume your crossing at Buffalo. These are really close to main Hwy you'll be on With all best to call ahead and order one in I used to bulk several flats at a time right from this wholesaler. only open Mon-Fri business hours but I think they still will sell 1 flat to walk in customers - cash and you have to make an appointment for pick up National Bait Inc 946 Lakeshore Rd E Mississauga ON 905-278-0180 Fishing World QEW going into Hamilton 2411 Barton E Hamilton, ON L8E 2W9 Bronte Outdoors ( I get mine from here now - They sell flats and by 100's) QEW in MIssissauga (you'll have to bypass 403 and take QEW to 427 to get to 400 highway) 121 Lakeshore Rd W Mississauga, ON L5H 1E9 Some others that might help True Canadian OutdoorsOn 400 north just outside Toronto at the Bass Pro Mall 3175 Rutherford Rd Concord, ON L4K 5Y6 The Bait Bucket 230 Innisfil St #1 Barrie, ON L4N 2N1 Huronia Bait 1721 Heron Dr Waubaushene, ON L0K 2C0
  5. A quick trip to Dollarama on all my fly in's can get a shopping bag full of goodies that makes life a bit more enjoyable for the week glow in the dark sticks to hang up at night. These places can get pitch black so a little ambient light helps for midnight pee breaks. We also hung some on the dock at night and it's amazing how far you can see these things Mouse trap/moth balls - nothing ruins a nights sleep when you hear little scurrying feet inside the cabin. EAR PLUGS!! - a must have Can of air freshener - nuff said! Freezer bags for the boat and leftovers mosquito coils and holder for the boat BBQ lighter and brush Dish towel - extra for cabin and 1 in the boat can opener - yes I have been on a fly in and found the one and only can opener in the cabin broken I always pack small 2 way radios as well. Mine have the weather channel and it's great to keep in touch when you can with each boat. They have limited range but work great. Plus always good to chirp your buddies when you're on fish. Just walk down each aisle and check stuff out and you'll be amazed at what you might need for the trip
  6. We've always stepped on the cavitation plate as the motors usually in the down position. We stop for swims and snorkeling a lot up north and even I can haul my big carcass back in the boat this way. I can always reach up on the motor and drop the trim down if it's still up to high from being on plane. Kind of hard on the knees getting over the transom but it works
  7. Had the same scenario on some of the early boat rentals purchased by my sister in laws resort on Temagami. First series of deluxe rental boats were powered by 15 and 25 HP and it was always a pain for maintaining battery levels through charger systems especially when guests are involved. They'd forget to plug them in or worst off was actually leaving stuff on overnight in the boat like fish finders, lights, live wells and bilge pump while tied to the dock. If you go chargers you better get a few back up batteries as no guest wants to be down when a battery is doa at 6 in the morning. Worth every penny when our next rental boats came in with alternators. You'll still run into dead batteries for reasons above but you won't have all the daily maintenance.
  8. Clothing is where you should start first Long sleeves, good socks, pants and even a light jacket. Pack a few neck buffs ( the ones for the sun) There are 2 kinds of head nets - green for Mosquitos and grey for black flies I always sprays my head nets with deet and keep them in a plastic ziplock bag I've done a load of May-June back lake trips in temagami and learned the hard way Once your properly clothed a little deet bug spray on the hands is easy
  9. No problems with that set up, I use my pin a lot more now for carp than I did a few years ago. It's not a rig I fish in and around snags or weeds. It'll work well if you've got some open water to play in like around any river mouths. Small egg sinker and hair rig works well with sweet corn or some of the carp corns like Cukk - my favorite has been the mussels and honey cumin flavor Another good technique is to set up a waggler float (similar to a slip float set up). The long stem float gets set with a few inches of the stem just above the water and acts as a strike indicator. This set up works best for me in water less than 4ft deep. All your bait and chum needs can be found at dollarama. Pick up a couple cans of sweet corn and a pack of breakfast oats. I wet the oats slightly and pack them into little balls to help chum the area.
  10. if it's like temagami the ling or burbot are all pretty decent size for the trout that eats them. you can find small 6" bulldawg clones on ebay that will work for what you're looking to do 4" and 6" tubes will do the trick too
  11. Northern white rhinos have been limited to all captive specimens for over a decade(s) with that number now down to 5 from the December death. This rhino was 44 and way past breeding age The biggest issue here is from the conservation authorities and governments that will not try to establish a population through mixed breeding with southern white rhinos who have rebounded well in the past number of years do to high and extreme conservation efforts There is reported lots of breeding material in frozen storage but at this time captive breeding has been limited to very low success and current technology Probably more info than needed as it shadows the terrible way humans have decimated this animal, but I really like rhinos
  12. I have a nice growing collection of light weight long sleeves. The last couple years I've been down in Florida for my son's baseball training and Walmart has a very nice $25 long sleeve in the fishing department that is UV 35 protection There is a line of clothing called Salt Life that is sold through BEALLS Department stores. Lots of salt water images but they have some plain camo and color tops as well. This spring I picked up an Underarmor and 2 salt life long sleeves that you'll see in photos this year for sure. BEALLS also has a line up called REEL LEGENDS and stuff is priced well. Easy enough to order as well, just like ordering from BPS online here's one that's on sale right now at BEALLS http://www.beallsflorida.com/online/reel-legends-mens-freeline-graphic-camo-t-shirt
  13. boats are out in front of Jordan and Port D this week. Mine gets unwrapped next weekend.
  14. Like Lew says. I've done 3/4 of the rooms in my house and have helped numerous friends/cottage builders A good rechargeable drill with a torque control on the chuck. Get it set that the resistance on the chuck breaks so the screws don't go deep and break the paper front on the drywall sheet A decent tool belt to hold the drill and a pouch for a full box of drywall screws and buy about a dozen of these http://www.lowes.com/pd_300547-353-DWS2_0__?productId=1208867 I've always hung drywall with the seams running vertical. Seen alot of the pros hanging horizontal starting from the bottom. Makes the but ends a little harder to mud but they say doing it horizontal is much easier one man job I've got a basement job coming up (25 sheets) and haven't decided which way to go yet. and one more item is that rotary cutter to do the boxes. makes excellent and clean cuts around the boxes. I have the rotozip and they are a bit messy but worth it for anything like boxes, pot light,...
  15. I saw that on line this morning as I was looking for an alternative to my Coleman Black Cat. I did bump across this mini BBQ that really perked my interest too http://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/master-chef-round-tabletop-gas-bbq-0853605p.html#.VPisfPnF_Lc It's supposed to be a clone of the Coleman RoadTrip Party Grill but has 10,000 BTU. At 15" wide it's a little bigger than my BlackCat but will fit inside my plastic tote with a couple of 1 lb bottles. Always wanted to have the ability to heat the hut and cook out there. Time to load up on some Johnsonville sausages!
  16. Think the huts are set up on McLaughlin Bay. Similar to Frenchman's Bay. Very good carp there in the summer but it gets super weedy
  17. Always fish 2 lines up there Brian. One constant jigging regardless of what the screen shows. I've found it's not a cat and mouse game like on simcoe. The other for me is a drop shot with 2 hooks with live minnows right on bottom. 80-100 fow for me has been a dead zone Loads in +100 but you need to sift through all the 1 lbrs. Gotta find some structure even if it's subtle. Big boys have a reputation for 40-60 flow but on obvious structure What was the snow like for walking away from the trails
  18. trying for the wife, son and his girlfriend Anyone know of a spot withing 30 minutes of Oakville, that is less than a 10 minute walk and has a Tim Horton's with free wifi.
  19. I do this ever now and then off Bronte and learned this technique fishing the ditch that ran off the one end of the Ridgetown at Port Credit. You can use the same outfits as you would use casting the bigger fall spoons off the piers. I run an 8ft spinning rod rated for 12-20 and a 4000 series reel. I tend to think that this is a shallower water technique (less than 40-50ft) so the need for extremely heavy jigs over 1 oz would be limited. The key to this is to have a harbor or rivermouth area that will have structure to group fish up and hold them. Something that is more prevalent in the bigger US harbors 1oz stuff works well enough - crocodiles, castmasters, moonshine, cleos If you drop shot for smallies you're pretty much 80% there now. You can always chase a big fish in a boat. I like the braid to help with feel as you'll have salmon swipe at the bait and miss every now and then. Plus it does help with line capacity on the 2500 or 3000 size reels if you get a screamer.
  20. I bought a 4 lb sirloin roast last weekend and cut it up into 1/4" cubes. That's the starting base of my chili. Next comes 2 lb lean ground, garlic, celery, onions, beans, mushrooms and a generous helping of ginger. Sauce base starts with 1 can of manwich, tomato paste, Guinness BBQ Sauce, thai seasoning and add a bit of hot sauce so it just has a slight bite! Slow cooked in the crock pot for 3 hours. Unfortunately it's also what I have brought for lunch the last 2 days so unlikely there will be any left for Sunday. Plan to go ice fishing anyways!
  21. If you have 2 set ups I'd turn one into a dispey or lead core set up and run it from the other side of the boat. Put a good rod holder on the open side and run the rods apart. You'll avoid a world of hurt down the road as it only a matter of time during the day when stacked rods WILL tangle Lead core has been the most productive for me the last couple years on Lake Ontario vs the dipsey's
  22. For ice fishing I always hit the dollar store/canadian tire before each season. I pick up a full box of the hot packs that go in your boots as they are really thin and I find the inexpensive thin knit gloves but they have to have some wool content. I use these gloves all ice fishing season under my heavy gloves. I buy several pairs and just swap a pair out if they get wet during the day. When it's really cold I slip into the palm a thin hot pack. I can jig right handed or left handed while I put the other hand in my pocket to let the hot pack warm everything back up.
  23. Very nice, Hopefully the same Chris Lyons. I was able to jump in a group and fish with a group of guys that included Chris out on the Ganny in the early 80's. I swear those guys were part fish and I learned a ton. Back then a lot of the guys were fishing to old green cardinal 3's and there were a number of US guys that came up that fished the Johnson/Shakespeare 1810 closed faced reels. I can remember seeing my first float reel in action fishing the mouth of the Ganny by the Willow Hole.
  24. The proposed 2014 law in Minnesota is in reference to another level of training/certification on the spread of Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS). Like getting your boating license, the DNR have proposed an on-line training course that is mandatory for all those boat, canoe, kayak and float plane owners. The course is aimed at increasing public awareness to prevent the spread of AIS's and of course it'll cost you money to complete. You get a sticker to put on your boat that says your trained not to spread invasive species. I think what has caused such an uproar is that you need the certification even if you are just travelling through the state with your boat and not stopping. It got the attention of many DNR's and also the MNR up here in Canada I could be wrong but when I was following this, I don't think it ever passed for the AIS training and decals. Instead Minnesota slapped an AIS user surcharge of $5.00 on all boat registrations. They're good for 3 years and then you have to pay again.
  25. I left to pick up my son from baseball training when it was 2-1 Canada. It's was only a 10 minute drive. get back and it was 5-4. What a drive. Had my 1972 Team Canada jersey on, waving my arms out the window when Canada scored. Had 4 or 5 cars honking their horns with me at a red light when Canada went up 5-1. It was a very different drive back home!!!!
