Finally Fished Lake Erie - Video Clip
OhioFisherman replied to MrSimon's topic in General Discussion
For some reason that opening to the Lake looked very familiar, American side? -
LOL, memories, I always had trouble getting my son to fish, he was either chasing critters, or food! Cool pics!

Do mayflies/shadflies screw up fishing?
OhioFisherman replied to bigcreekdad's topic in General Discussion
It's been a long time, but I actually had some of my best days walleye fishing there in mid July to mid August, the mayfly hatch was over and their diet had changed. -

OhioFisherman replied to bigcreekdad's topic in General Discussion
Far and away our worst trip to Pointe Au Baril happened during the hatch. There were little islands of them floating all over the top of the water, you could watch fish rolling on the islands of bugs, but couldn't seem to get them to hit anything else. -
They can be a tough loss, sorry guy! My son had his dog for 17 years, he still has his ashes in his room.

We trolled ( long line) on Lake Erie for years using a diving crank bait like a storm wiggle wart or hot n tot, they were all you needed to limit out by noon. I have caught them on tube jigs, rattle trap style lures, jig and twister tail, burning a blade bait like a heddon sonar out of the shallows, and my personal best came on a spinner bait up north. Find hungry fish?

Erie high winds today - dirty tomorrow?
OhioFisherman replied to landry's topic in General Discussion
No idea, but we haven't had a dry day here on the south side of the lake in about a week. All that dirt washing down our streams and rivers has to be going somewhere? -
Happy birthday Canada, it is a great place with great people.

Great! Nice fish!

advice on buying land and rural life
OhioFisherman replied to huzzsaba's topic in General Discussion
My county is a bit smaller Old, with around 4 times the population. They do our property taxes on assessed value too. As I recall they have a van that drives around with a camera mounted on top and take pictures, that also allows them to determine if you have built anything without the required permits. -
Charging trolling motor batteries with outboard

25 amp alternator? Don't most cars have a 100 amp or more? I doubt if it would be a lot of help. -
advice on buying land and rural life
OhioFisherman replied to huzzsaba's topic in General Discussion
I have no idea how your tax structure works up there, I live in a rural township here, it has zoning requirements, mobile homes are not allowed and there is a 3 acre minimum lot size to build a home. I live around 10 miles from a small city (population around 25k), if I moved there my property taxes would double to support multi-layers of government and city provided services. It never seemed worthwhile to me to pay around 400 bucks a month for a lot of services that I didn't really need or want. We have 3 township trustees that run the townships business, they are part time, our police protection is thru the county sheriff's department and they do a good job, there is of course a fee included in our taxes, but lower than a full time police force would cost. We have a fire station, new one built around 10 years ago, staffed by volunteer firemen and rescue squad, at a lower cost than a full time force, they also do a good job. The township plows and repairs the roads, we have city water, septic systems, a community ballpark, cemetary, and not a lot else to pay for besides schools included in our tax bills. Having the family on board is a big deal, especially over time, my daughters liked it here, until they grew breasts, then there wasn't enough excitement! LOL My son, now 26, still loves it here and still lives with me. I traded up, I got a dog and ditched the wife! LOL -
So what about all this rain, are you seeing it?

It was a normal looking spring here until mid - late May and the farmers got their crops in. Since then we seem to be on a path to break or tie the 2011 record rainfall year here. http://www.weather.com/weather/tenday/l/44253 I am beginning to think partly cloudy means it will only be dry when it's not cloudy. LOL -
With all the rain we have been getting here? The lake probably looks like chocolate milk.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Abu-507-Closed-Face-Reel-With-Original-Paperwork-/171834130533?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item28021cc065 I used these pretty extensively, 17-20# test and you can flip or pitch an unweighted plastic worm or 1/8 ounce lure well. No line twist or tangles and great for fishing at night in the dark. The black ring on the front of the reel face is the line release, you just catch the line with your finger and go.

Nice pics, looks like a great area. I was looking for information on it too when I found this board, the trip never happened, but it is a great board. -
Tug boat flipped...(update 2nd tug flipped)

Hmmm... save some money? hire a pro? -
Almost all that are seen down here are one lake wonders, it is very rare to see them being trailed to different lakes. I have only seen one on Lake Erie, some guy on a quest we talked with at South Bass Island ( Put in Bay). He claimed to have started in Lake Superior and was headed to Florida, he stopped at South Bass because of high winds and waves. They aren't intended to be speed boats or for rough water? most I have seen probably catch a lot of wind?

Ooooold steam engine - Check it out (NF)
OhioFisherman replied to Rod Caster's topic in General Discussion
At one time they had steam farm tractors, i became very leery of being around any that were still operating after an incident here. http://abcnews.go.com/US/story?id=92758 One of my son's friend was badly burned, as was his father who also lost an eye. -

Fish for muskies for 5-6 hours, when you get tired of no hits? Put on a top water bass lure on inappropriate tackle for muskies, they are sure to hit! LOL I always though that area was the most beautiful area of Ontario I had visited, and we went there as a multifamily group at times, just my own families vacation, and a guy trip later in the year ( September ). It's like the land of a million spots to fish? It takes some time to sort thru them and figure out which work better for you at various times of the year. Ladies? The skill level of the ones in my family was pretty low, to keep them occupied and happy catching something often meant a day of live bait fishing.

I would suggest getting a chart of the area before you go, it may give you a better idea of the amount of rocks? I went there for around 25 years and never had a problem, but if I was unsure of an area it was electric motor only for me. It's also been 26 years or so since I have been there, no idea how the current water levels are. Only one time it was rough enough for me to stay put inside the inlet, in the dark in a smaller boat with a way smaller motor, just couldn't be sure where the known rocks were because of dark and waves. We never landed a big ski, and didn't catch a small one, there were some very big ones there, we weren't prepared for them. It's probably more a size place than a quantity place for skis. From the mouth of the inlet back to the Sturgeon is a lot of water to try and cover in a weekend? We couldn't do it all when we went for 2 weeks at a time.
