  1. Thx for the chuckle HH. Nothing like a good Newfie joke.
  2. I consider myself to be a very good driver and I have never been involved in an accident with a human being or another vehicle while behind the wheel. Although I would be the 1st to admit that I have had a few narrow escapes that would have been 100% my fault if not for pure luck. So it's pretty hard for me to criticize someone else's driving. A split second of not paying attention is all it takes. Accidents happen. Just be thankful if your not involved in one like this. I feel bad for the families involved.
  3. Thieves unfortunately are everywhere. We had a problem in our neighborhood for a while. I never locked the car and had change stolen out of it a few times...so you know its just kids. Food was stolen from the freezer in our neighbors garage...etc, etc. There was one punk kid in our neighborhood and many including myself, thought it was him. Funny how after they moved things stopped disappearing. I lock up now and consider myself lucky that I only had change stolen out of my car. Sorry to hear that some low life made off with your tackle Cliff. Hopefully that d-o-u-c-h-e with move out of your area soon too.
  4. Lew I'm sure it will be a girthy 5 footer before the day is done Nice report Joe. Looking forward to some pictures posted by the rest of the motley crew.
  5. Boys and there toys How painfully obvious is it that I'm jealous.
  6. Sounds like an awesome job Dan I was there in 1980...so I'm not sure what opened in 2008 because the hatchery was there looonnnng before that. Will you be onsite in the "dorm rooms" in the big house we stayed in? When I was there it was with the Ontario Junior Ranger program and the sanitation was not quite the same. 8 or 10 of us pretty much wandered around whereever we wanted except in the building the fry fish where in. A few lucky guys...not myself..even got to walk around the big cement outdoor tanks with galvanized pails of fish pellets and feed the lakers. Now that was a feeding frenzy I will never forget!!! You have brought back some great memories for me. I hope you can smuggle some pictures out. I'd love to see just how much it has changed since I was there.
  7. One of the things I have always loved about this site. Good on you for the generous offer
  8. I think Joey has it figured out Cliff
  9. Funny thread you started Cliff. Debbe and the kids had one in the house once when I was working the night shift. The cat actually caught it a few times but just wanted to play with it so after a few seconds it would get free and fly around again. Debbe finally caught it by throwing her housecoat over it as it flew close to her. Then Jake opened the front door and Debbe threw her housecoat on the lawn. They watched the housecoat until the bat freed itself from it and then they brought the housecoat back in the house.
  10. If I harvest a snapper it will not go to waste. I just would feel it was a waste if no one in my family actually enjoyed eating it. I just wanted to clarify that.
  11. I tend to agree that this is what really happened. Myself I have always wanted to try harvesting a snapper. I grew up in a farm environment so killing things for food isn't really a big deal for me. And I have the opportunity pretty much every weekend up in the Kawartha's...but at the end of the day I always talk myself out of it. Mainly I'd hate to waste one if myself or no one else in my family actually enjoyed eating it. It is on my bucket list though. P.S. I did not do the multi quote thing on purpose. Not sure why it happened.
  12. What Beansie said. And when it's just under "my size" I usually tell the little bugger that it is it's lucky day as I release it
  13. Caught my share on the upper Bruce. All in the Willow creek area. My favourite was one I saw while heading into Tobermory with my wife, my sister, my mom and my sister in law in the car. It was sunning itself on the side of Dorcas Bay Rd. I pulled over and scared it off the road with a stick so it would not get run over. Then I pinned it down and picked it up and walked back towards the car full of women asking them if they wanted a closer look. I heard some pretty colorful language that day
  14. Electric Fillet Knive....nuff said
  15. Is it corporate greed.... expanding legacy costs.... or a combination of both? I couldn't support either side unless I knew all the facts. Legacy costs will be the ruin of many pension plans in the next 20 years. We lost our pension last March...but us "old timers" have our time accumulated pensions grandfathered.
  16. I voted no. However I do pack the car the night before if I'm getting up real early to head out fishing...but I didn't feel that really counted as leaving it in the car.
  17. There is a town owned trailer park right at the beach in Bobcaygeon with sites available. It has a good boat launch. It is a quiet park...I know because our cottage is right across the road. You can fish Sturgeon from your park or trailer less then a mile to a free launch at the north end of Pidgeon and fish it. Many many lakes are just a short tow away. Being right in town may not appeal to some but we really like it. You can literally walk to the beer or liquor store or even get last minute groceries...as well as quick trips to Homehardware if something needs fixing. The ladies like exploring the shops on the main street as well. If we had went the trailer route I would have been in there in a heartbeat. Sorry I don't have any info on the park but I'm sure a quick goggle search would turn something up for you or maybe someone on here will chime in. Good luck with your hunting and I hope you enjoy your new get away
  18. I don't like the gulp baits because they are too soft. But I use finesse plastics from lunker city. They make there own jigheads for there plastics too. The collar of the jighead is threaded like a screw and the fish never ever pull them off. I end up tearing a badly chewed up body off and replacing it with a new body before the fish tears it off.
  19. Happy to hear that Cliff My heart sank a little bit when I checked the website.
  20. Cliff you mentioned it has a 1500LB towing capacity. I just checked the specs on the Toyota website. The basic Matrix is NOT rated for towing at all. But the XRS and the AWD are rated for 1500 as you mentioned. You might wanna look into it further in case you have warranty issues down the road.
  21. Dinks. A term you don't wanna hear. Slabs. A term you Do wanna hear. "We slaughtered em" The very best beginning when your telling someone of a recent fishing trip.
  22. Good luck with whatever you go with Cliff. Debbe and I got a 2013 Hyundia Sante Fe in March. I know that is not one of your choices, however I thought I would mention that this is our 3rd Hyundia vehicle and Ontario Hyundia who we deal with hear in Oshawa...well the dealership is in Whitby... has treated us very well...I can't say enough about them. Also our other 2 Hyundia's which where both Accents where bullet proof and cost next to nothing to maintain...Debbe is driving the 2006 right now. Although it is only fair to mention the Accents where Debbe's daily driver...12 KM a day to and from work so they never had any tough sledding to do. But some say just puttering around town is harder on a car then getting it out on the hiway. Just thought I would mention how happy we have been with Hyundia Cliff. Again good luck with your car hunting.
  23. Your not alone Rich. Bluegills are pretty much the only fish I keep for the table from the Kawarthas in the summer although I have never had them flaked. My old bosses wife used to can fish. I gave her a bunch of suckers one spring and got a few mason jars of the finished product. Just as good as any can of tuna or salmon I have ever had from the store.
